in the silence after

Summary:

After Hemlock goes over the side of the walkway, there’s silence. And then they have to deal with the aftermath.

Basically the aftermath of what our boys went through on Tantiss.

Notes:

I’m very new to writing fanfics for Star Wars so please forgive any mistakes I may have made.

Chapter Text

On their long walk (or hobble) back to the ship that Echo had commandeered, Hunter and Crosshair began leaning on each other more and more. You couldn’t tell who was holding who up on their feet. Hunter’s left leg repeatedly buckled beneath him and Crosshair’s feet were dragging with each step.

Omega had hovered around them when they began the trek back to the shuttle bay, and eventually she took Hunter’s left hand and put it on her shoulder to help him take some weight off his leg. She glanced worriedly at them as they shuffled through the wreckage of Tantiss, leaving a smeared trail of blood in their wake, though it was impossible to tell whose blood it was.

Crosshair was simply focussing on putting one foot in front of the other, albeit clumsily, but he was managing to stay on his feet as his vision started to grey out. His hand - no, his arm - was throbbing, sending sharp shooting pains up into his neck, increasing with every step as the adrenaline wore off. He hadn’t noticed that they had reached the shuttle bay until he felt someone gently taking his injured arm and draping it over their neck.

“I’ve got you Cross,” Echo’s voice comes from beside him, “You’re almost at the ship.”

With a quick, tired glance to his left Crosshair saw that a reg had taken over Omega’s job and was practically hauling Hunter towards the ship. Crosshair stumbled up the ramp, once he was through the doorway Echo handed him off to another reg.

“Find them a medic,” he said sharply, “I need to get to the cockpit and get us out of here.”

The reg steered Crosshair, whose vision was swimming in and out, to a bunk and laid him down.

“Medic!” The reg called to the group of regs further down the ship corridor, “Are any of you a medic?”

“I am,” One of them stepped forward, “602nd legion.”

“Me too,” Said another, “923rd legion.”

“Come over here and help me with him,” The reg carrying Hunter grunted, Hunter having obviously lost his battle with consciousness.

Omega hovered beside him, eyes darting between Hunter and Crosshair, obviously torn between who to be with.

“I’m fine,” The words took more effort to form than Crosshair had expected as he clumsily waved with his left - his only - hand, “Look after Hunter.”

“Kark ‘you’re fine’”, the first medic scoffed at him, holding a med scanner. Crosshair hadn’t even noticed him coming to his side, “It’s a miracle you’re conscious right now.”

Crosshair’s body seemed to take that as a challenge and his vision went from fuzzy black and white to a smooth black as he passed out.

*************

Wrecker would be the first to admit that he wasn’t completely aware of everything that happened after the CX operative shot him full of electricity but he knew something was wrong on the shuttle.

He was propped against a wall near the bunks, since he hadn’t had the energy to actually get himself into one of the beds. The regs rushing around him seemed pretty busy, and besides he didn’t want to bother any of them to help.

But his head was throbbing, along with his chest and it hurt just a bit to breathe. Well, enough that he felt like he couldn’t take a deep breath.

Where was Hunter? And Echo? And Crosshair?

Where was Omega?? Did they save her?

Wrecker felt his breath get shorter and shorter as he panicked, for some reason the shortened breaths just made his chest hurt more.

He felt someone kneel in front of him and gently slap him on the cheek.

“Wrecker. Wrecker!” Echo’s voice made his eyes open to see a very blurry version of Echo.

“Wrecker,” Echo continued, “We need to look at your wounds, okay? I have a medic here,” He gestured somewhere behind him that Wrecker couldn’t seem to focus on, “We’re gonna take care of you alright?”

Wrecker blinked a few times, then nodded and regretted it instantly by the way his vision swam.

Echo and the reg helped him up and he just barely morphed a scream into a sharp groan.

They had gotten him situated on one of the bunks before he remembered to ask.

“Omega?” He gasped, “And Hunter and Cross?”

“Omega’s here,” Echo reassured, “She’s okay. Hunter and Crosshair are here too, they’re just a little beat up.”

Echo shot a glance at the reg but Wrecker didn’t have the energy to interpret what that meant.

“We just need to look after you right now,” The reg added.

Together Echo and the reg, Snap something or other, divested Wrecker of his armour. Snap ran a scanner over Wrecker and hissed at what he saw.

“Here big guy,” Snap said, reaching into a med kit that he’d brought, “I can give you something for the pain.”

“No!” Wrecker burst out, “Not before I know the others are okay.”

He tried to push himself up but found that his left arm didn’t move. Echo gently pushed him back onto the bed.

“They’re not okay,” Echo admitted, “But they will be, okay? You have to look after yourself right now.”

After trying again to get up, Wrecker gave in and Snap quickly pressed the needle to his neck and released it with a hiss.

Wrecker’s awareness slowly faded away into painless nothingness.
