getting there (his person)

Summary:

He stares at those lips and tries again, to say it properly, like Kao's been telling him to do.

Or, that scene from the end of episode 7, from Dee's POV, expanded.

Work Text:

Dee doesn't try calling Yak again after Kao tells him the news. All he could think about is getting to Yak, being there for him.

There, as in Thailand. He fidgets in the taxi to the airport. He bounces on his feet as he waits to check in. He chews on his lips as he stares out of his plane, so high up in the sky he could see the curvature of the earth, the slow dimming of it as night descends, blue, bluer, purple.

Then he's on the ground again, running, running, rushing through traffic, so much traffic.

Yak still hasn't responded to a single text. He hasn't even read them, in fact. And Dee hears Kao in his head again, saying, "If you don't tell him how you feel, you'll lose him."

Never mind that Dee's already lost him. And is losing a fake boyfriend supposed to hurt this much? But in any case, Dee has to see him, wants to hold him, tell him it's going to be okay, rub his back and comfort him. It's not even really a want anymore. It's a need, imperative.

After a quick shower and a change of clothes, Dee goes to the first place he thinks of -- Yak's secret hideout, a bar in the center of the city, high up, hidden, safe. Should he have gone to the club first? Would Yak be wrapped in a blanket in his bed? But no, Yak is here after all, at the rooftop bar, a lonely figure with his lone glass of wine.

"Yak," he calls out when he's close enough to feel the heat of him.

Yak turns around, surprised. "Doc," he says, and then his whole body sags as tears start to fall. "I lost." He sounds young, so young, looks so sad and lost. His face bears a bruise and Dee's heart squeezes at the sight and sound of him.

Dee wipes away a tear as he cups his cheek, but Yak's crying harder now, like the dam's finally broken. And Dee doesn't think, just does. He kisses him, full on the lips like Yak's wanted him to all this time. Like he's wanted for a long while now too, if he's honest with himself.

"Are you consoling me?" Yak looks surprised, face still tear-streaked.

And he guesses he is. Dee confirms it for him. And watches as Yak's head hangs down, as Yak deflates.

And that hurts, that hurts especially with how much Dee wants to kiss him again, properly, deeply, as much as Yak would let him.

He stares at those lips and tries again, to say it properly, like Kao's been telling him to do. "But this kiss is all from me, nothing to do with the reward." He looks searchingly into Yak's eyes, willing him to understand: the one I truly love, it's you.

And this time, the kiss feels even more solid, if still salty with Yak's tears in their mouths. This time, Yak's kissing him back. Yak's winding his arms around him too, holding him close. Yak's chasing after his lips when Dee's exhausted all he knows of kissing from watching others. Dee feels his inexperience as Yak deepens their kiss, as Yak swipes a tongue into his mouth and trips a million nerves at once. Oh. This. This is what kissing is all about.

Dee's breathing hard and smiling into Yak's shoulder after, the cool night air twinkling with stars and all the lights of the city. It's beautiful here, sparkling, right here with Yak.

"Doc, you kissed me." Yak's saying.

"Mm."

"Did you mean it?"

Dee's smile falls as he pulls back to look Yak in the eyes. "Am I that bad of a kisser?"

Yak blinks at him, mouth falling open.

"Because I'm going to need you to teach me how to kiss until you believe me, that I mean it."

Yak's expression thaws and he smirks as he swallows, his Adam's apple bobbing, drawing attention to his neck and the necklace there, the one he entrusted to Dee once. "Is that the theme tonight? Student and teacher?"

Dee shakes his head. "The theme is... real boyfriends." He looks hopefully at Yak. Hopefully he's not too late, hasn't fumbled this completely.

"Real boyfriends?"

"Mm. I wouldn't have given you my first kiss otherwise. You know I've been-"

But he doesn't get to finish his sentence because Yak's kissing him, a warm suction that feels more like a yes than the word yes.

Still, Dee can't help asking. "Is that a yes? Will you be my boyfriend?"

Yak takes a step back, which is alarming. But then he unhooks his necklace, and Dee's heart speeds up, faster and faster. He lets out a breath -- didn't know he was holding it -- as Yak winds the cool metal around his neck again, its familiar weight like a kiss itself, a resounding yes.

After, when they're back at Dee's place, shoes slotted neat next to each other's, Dee turns around and grabs Yak's hand. "Here," he places the key card in his palm. "Boyfriend."

And it feels like he's come home for real now, home with his person, his love who kisses him so sweetly and then with more spice, and then with a whole rack of spices. Anyway, his person.
