Chapter Text
In the heart of Tokyo, where shadows of crime loomed over the bustling city, two formidable men found themselves drawn together by fate. Akai Shuichi, the stoic and enigmatic FBI agent, and Furuya Rei, the resourceful and charismatic NPA officer, were used to working on opposite sides of the law. Yet, their shared goal of dismantling the Black Organization had forged an unbreakable bond between them.
After countless missions together, Akai and Furuya developed a deep respect and understanding. Their professional partnership gradually evolved into something more profound—a connection neither had anticipated. As they spent more time together, the walls around their hearts began to crumble, allowing them to explore the possibility of a future together.
After years of battling the organization together, they succeeded in eliminating its most prominent members—Vodka, Chianti, Korn—but two remained on the run: Gin and Rum. Though Gin and Rum were undeniably dangerous, the pair posed little threat on their own. Consequently, Furuya and Akai decided to shift their focus toward their family life, while keeping an eye out for those elusive two.
After two years of dating, Akai and Furuya had now become a happily married couple. However, despite their contentment, they felt something was missing, a true family, a cozy home. It was then that Furuya had the wonderful idea of adopting a child. After lengthy negotiations, Furuya finally managed to convince Akai, who had initially been against the idea, fearing it would be too dangerous for a child to live with them. One day, as they were both watching TV, Furuya brought up the subject again.
He turns down the volume on the TV. "Shuichi, can we talk?"
Sure, Rei. What's on your mind?
It's about adopting. I've been thinking a lot about it, he sighed.
-Rei, we've discussed this before. Our line of work is too dangerous for a child.
-I know but listen. We've been married for a year now. We've faced so many dangers and come out stronger. I believe we can provide a safe and loving home for a child, he said.
-It's not just about safety, Rei. Our lifestyle... it's unpredictable. I don't want to put a child in danger, Shuichi replied, sighing.
-Shuichi, every child deserves a chance at a loving family. We can protect them. We've built something solid together. We can do this, he insisted.
Shuichi paused, looking into Rei's eyes. -You believe we can make this work, don't you?
Rei smiled softly. -Yes, I do. We've been through so much together. I know we can handle this too.
After a long silence, Shuichi said, Alright, Rei. -Let's try. But we need to be very careful.
After finally agreeing, Akai and Furuya set off to visit several orphanages. Despite their efforts, they struggled to find the ideal child. Many were adorable, but none seemed to be the right fit for both. Moreover, most of the children were intimidated by Akai's stern demeanor and cold gaze. With each visit, hope and frustration grew in equal measure. They had met many children some shy, some lively but none felt like the missing piece of their family puzzle. Furuya, ever the optimist, kept their spirits high while Akai tried to soften his intimidating presence.
-How about this one, Shuichi? He seems sweet, said Furuya, smiling.
-He's scared of me, Rei. I can't bear living with someone who won't even look at me in the eyes.
-Yeah…you're right. We'll keep looking. The right one is out there, I know it.
After weeks had passed, just as they started to lose hope, a new ray of hope appeared from an old orphanage. Despite being old, the orphanage had a cheerful atmosphere, with children playing happily. The director warmly welcomed them and introduced them to several children. However, many of the kids either seemed too frightened or did not appear to be the right fit.
After meeting all the children, Akai and Furuya were about to leave when they noticed something intriguing. A young boy was explaining fractions to a girl who appeared way older than him. Surprised by this, Furuya approached the boy
Approaching him gently Furuya introduced himself
-Hello there. My name is Rei. What's your name?
looks up briefly uninterested, -Conan.
-Nice to meet you, Conan. How old are you?
-I'm seven
-Wow, you're pretty smart for a seven-year-old. What were you explaining to your friend?
Conan shrugs,- Just fractions.
-That's impressive. Do you like math?
Conan stayed silent telling Furuya indirectly or in this situation directly that he didn't want to talk
Furuya smiled -How about a little challenge? Let's see how good you are at math.
-I don't want to.
-Oh, come on. Are you afraid you might lose? he said smirking
Conan paused then looked at Furuya eyes narrow in determination, -Fine. What’s the challenge?
-I'll ask you three math questions. If you can answer them correctly, you win.
-Okay
Furuya asked his three questions and Conan answered all of them quickly and correctly
He was amazed by this kid
-Wow Conan-kun you're so intelligent
Conan smirked, but then he realized that he had fallen for Furuya's trick. He was so angry at himself that he went to his room to hide.
Furuya stood there, amazed by Conan's quick thinking. Akai, observing the exchange, walked over to Furuya, who explained what had happened and expressed that Conan seemed perfect for them. Intrigued, Akai went to speak with the director about Conan.
-Excuse me, Director. Can we talk about Conan?
The director visibly anxious -Oh dear, did Conan do something wrong? I apologize if he caused any trouble.
-No, it's quite the opposite. We're interested in Conan and would like to speak with him.
The director sighed deeply, then called out to Conan with unexpected fierceness Conan, get out here right now!
Despite the director's loud call, there was no response from Conan. The director apologized again and went to Conan's room, closing the door behind him. Muffled sounds of a heated exchange could be heard. Moments later, the director emerged, dragging Conan along.
Conan, eyes fixed on the floor, was brought to the office where Akai and Furuya waited. When Conan finally looked up, he furrowed his brows and stared directly at Akai with a fierce expression.
Akai, noticing Conan's defiant look, was both amused and impressed by the boy's spirit.
