Work Text:

It was hot. The heat not giving any of them any mercy even if they were still in the clutches of the supposedly chilly November air. If anything, it should be freezing right now, with all the snow and all and everything in between. Plus the holiday seasons and that fact that it was nearing Christmas already and oh my god why the fuck is it so hot in the tail end of November?

An unusually loud sigh left Enna as she fell back to the fluffy carpeted floor. All hopes abandoned at hoping this heat would go away. She sighed one more time, closing her eyes, enjoying the soft of the carpeted floor in the living room. Content in being a pile of limbs slowly cooling down with the help of the fan. The songbird was left once again in the house, opting to have some chill quiet alone time to herself. Millie had invited her to do a girl's day out but she was tired, and she wanted to be a shut in for once. Kinda like Selen actually.

Hm.

Maybe she could sneak into her room actually, she remembers that the half-dragon had a better room for the ac sysmtem. Not like she didnt have her own but it was always more comfy when she was in Selen's room tho. She should ask Selen about that, the secrets of keeping a well ventilated room.

"The what now?"

"What the fuc-!? Luceat lux vestra nunc et semper,"

A blast of light shot out as she uttered the Latin words, and engulfed the house for a tiny bit before Enna got her senses back.

Okay, maybe zoning out while in the middle of the living room wasn't such a good idea... and also maybe hitting said purple dragon that had been in her thoughts a few minutes ago with some angelic power was also not a good idea. If the groan of pain and the seemingly inconspicuous hole weren't going to clue her in on that.

With a rush and her feathers rustling, she almost tripped on her on feet as she made her way over to the half-dragon that seemed to have given up on standing. Laying there while her legs dangled on the wall. Giving a thumbs up.

"Holy shit- Selen!"

"I'm alright!!" a pause, "just need to catch my strength."

That does not give Enna any confidence at all.

"What the fuck," Enna whisper yells, stepping into the hole to see how much damage had been done just to see a goofy smile staring back at her along with a bag of take out.

"I brought back food- hey! ow!" a slap on the shoulder interrupted the half-dragon before she felt a light weight on her chest. Looking down to see the songbird's flushed ears and grinning softly.

"We'll eat the food later. Okay?" Enna says, the words muffled by Selen's sweater.

The half-dragon gave a low chuckle in return, patting one of Enna's frazzled wings,

"Alright. Food later."

Selen hears a sigh at that, feeling most of the tension float away from the girl currently on her chest.

"Yep," Enna lifts her head, looking down at Selen, trying to see if the purple dragon was hurt seriously anywhere, "First we gotta get you cleaned up. Sorry about the blast..."

"All good, I probably shouldn't have snuck up on you," Selen says, looking up the ceiling, "It was very funny though."

"You, are a dumbass."

"Says the person who angel blasted me through the wall."

"Touché," Enna says back, rolling her eyes a bit. "Come on tho, we gotta get you cleaned up," she pauses, "also maybe the hole we made."

She hears a laugh from the half-dragon as she helped her stand up, dusting away the dust and debris that settled on her clothes.

"Hey, that's on you," Selen says, already searching for a dustpan, "not on me." Enna could practically hear the smirk in the way she said those. A playful shove was the only thing she could say in response, joining Selen in the quest of cleaning up the mess that was made.

Clean up wasn't that bad to be honest, although, they have no idea how to explain to everyone else as to *why* there was a gaping hole in their wall leading the kitchen. They really should start to come up their excuse, Enna thinks, but... The food they were eating right now was way too good and it was the first time in a good while that she actually saw Selen that wasn't about to fall asleep. Which was nice but she really does need to ask her about the secrets of her ac soon enough, and no this was definitely not an excuse so that she could potentially sleep on Selen's bed again..... or sleep while cuddling again. She's pretty sure Selen won't mind even if she just asks her though. Thinking back to all the times they've already cuddled to sleep the past few months.

The songbird's musings were cut short when she saw her vision cross and focus on a finger right in front of her.

"boop." andddddd she was booped by the half-dragon.

"shtoppp-" She whines, "Im shtill eathingf the foods" Enna continues, "ishts really gudfg."

The half-dragon snickers, not saying anything but taking a cloth to wipe something on Enna's face. A satisfied smile adorning her lips, softer than usual, once she got rid of the stray food on the songbird's face.

She looks at  her for a few seconds more before Enna barely here's a barely said,

"There."

Enna hums. Focusing on her meal, not hiding her ears turning red once again. Selen had already finished hers and put away the ones she bought for the others inside the fridge. She hums again, getting a spoonful of her meal before feeding it to the half-dragon. A hum of approval her only response.

Enna doesn't mind these moments. It was pretty nice. The soft and the quiet. And Selen being great company. Yeah. Selen also seems so... Relaxed. The most she had seen since she had started working on her birthday project and she was happy for that...

Yeah, Enna wouldn't mind if these happened more.

.

.

.

"Selen?"

No response.

"Selen," she tries again. Brain and instincts fighting with each other, sending both to overdrive as she tries and fails to get a response out of the half-dragon currently on the floor. The soft carpet further agitating her.

To say that Enna was getting a bit desperate now was an understatement, lying on the half-dragon's chest, trying to feel her heartbeat.

She doesn't know what to do.

She doesn't know what to do.

And its getting worse. God what she wouldn't do to just be dealing with the black ring instead.

She was familiar with demons and spirits but never this. This black mist almost covering Selen's body, from her face to her chest that she couldn't even see her anymore.

Something hot fell on her hand. She ignored it but then more came falling down. She held tighter onto Selen's sweater, her knuckles threatening to burst. Enna had never felt more alone and helpless in all her entire life and she had been to both Hell and Heaven for fuck's sake. She should be able to do something instead of just- just sit there and watch as this thing try and take over someone who she never thought she would be this close to in the span of a few months.

This fucker who somehow made her mushy and soft, even more so than when she was with her best friends. This toxic gamer who she had waken up snuggled close to more than once and she didn't even mind. The soft mornings and the worries and god damn it she doesn't want to lose her like this. Not when they haven't even talked about all of this that had been happening with each other in the last months. She was crying and she knew it, a few sobs already escaping and wracking her small body, the feeling of dread heavy in her stomach.

It was spreading now and Enna couldn't do anything. The things she had learned in heaven in cleansing hellish spirits cycling through her mind at the speed of light, trying and sifting and recollecting and- There was a hand on her waist.

A hand on her waist.

A hand.

Her waist.

Rubbing slow soft circles. Calming her down.

A hand on the small of her back, making sure she wouldn't fall even if they were already on the floor in the first place. Running up and down until she felt her own hands reach down to the hand on her waist. Hesitating before giving it a squeeze. Crying again when she felt the hand squeeze back, rough scales and scars and all that and Selen was still there. Still here. With her.

Enna hums a song. It was an anime song that she'd heard a while ago, funnily enough it was the korean version that she had liked the most. Playing with the hand she was holding, the hand responding back, the hand on her back repositioning to find a better way to hold her. Playing with her wings a bit, making them flutter. Enna doesn't stop. Keeps humming the song until she as full on Selen's chest again, still focused on the hand she was holding.

Tracing all the scars that had littered the dragon arm, trying to know the story just by running her fingers over the rough scales and skin. Feeling how whatever was trying to engulf Selen slowly slither away until all the was left were wisps leading to a faint ring around Selen's neck.

Until she felt the small rumble in Selen's chest, making her exhale shakily in return.

Eyes closed and hands trailing up until she could feel Selen's face.

Blue and purple eyes greeted her when she looked down. Exhausted eyes, but still brimming with this... adoration and worry and she might just cry again because it wasn't here that had been mere seconds away from being taken away.

Mismatched eyes began to droop and Enna knew she didn't have much time before the half-dragon falls asleep once again. She takes a deep breath, calming her nerves. She needed Nina here as well before they can really do anything more about the thing that had been haunting Selen for how many years now.

Enna found herself pressing their foreheads together, feeling the faint breathing of the half-dragon with their faces being so close. She hears Selen faintly mutter something that she couldn't understand, before she imbues her next words with her remaining magic that she had learned from heaven,

"Omne quod tecum erat mihi suave, sine te laboriosum est et grave." A whispered prayer before everything gets engulfed in white and Selen's hand fell limp in hers.

The half-dragon in a state of a coma, buying her enough time until Nina had finally gotten to them, door kicked open and all.

She could hear the fox spirit's motherly voice float around the room, panicked and weary. Enna was spent though. Too tired to even look at Nina, content in laying on top of Selen. Feeling the half-dragons slowed heart beat.

Nothing had gone according to plan.

And she really thought they could have celebrated Selen's birthday better.

It was something that the four of them had been planning, her, Nina, Elira, and Pomu. The fairy had suggested they do something since she had noticed that Selen was stressed even more than usual because of the birthday concert that she had planned. Working while sick. Pushing through even after a bit of a set back with Elira.

Enna wants to cry. Really. But she's spent.

Maybe next time they could eat together. She hasn't treated Selen with any food yet and she wanted to be the one that has the food the next time they had some time with each other. The only time she did see Selen relaxed this week was when they made a hole in the wall. Maybe she should have planned something then, or even just pestered her some. All these maybe's...

Enna sighs and Nina looks at her, eyes full of concern, tails all fluffed up from stress probably. Still. she says nothing, only making her self comfortable before she fell asleep as well.

The fox spirit left to oversee the two once again, except this time her heart aches a little bit more for the two.

Elira, for all the praise and flowery words, was not the best older sister that everyone believes her to be. There were a lot of things that she had never done and maybe that was the worst thing about all of it really. Usually people would say it was ok. That she was still learning how to take care of someone younger than her.

She wishes that were true. That it wasn't her fault and that it wasn't for the lack of trying. The truth was, for the better portion of their childhood, Elira didn't even try.

Elira never tried.

When she did, everything was way too late and the next time she saw Selen was when her younger sister had all grown up. The laughing toxic dragon gamer that everyone knew and adored. The little dragon she had sent bleeding when the only thing Selen had wanted was to play with her and- and...

The solar dragon sighs, all of her thoughts swirling about in her mind getting messier and messier like a table that she just kept piling stuff over and over with the promise of cleaning it up one day. She wasn't going to get any work done at this point if she were to be honest. The amount of things that had resurfaced ever since Selen got sick was making her head fuzzy. No amount of work kept her distracted enough until her mind eventually drifted to her younger sister again.

It was snowing today. Unlike that one heatwave they somehow got, today was cold. The snow outside pristine white and falling slowly right outside her window.

Elira wonders briefly if things could have been better if she actually tried back then. Tries not to think back on all the scribbles of stickmen on old printer paper back home preserved best as it could, tucked away in a little corner of a small room. How all of it had been her and Selen playing together in different scenarios.

Selen's birthday was today, Elira thinks, watching the snow fall outside her window. She had watched the birthday concert. It was amazing and she couldn't have been prouder really. All those months of planning and stress finally paying off and the older dragon couldn't help but smile a bit. She hadn't been able to be there but Pomu had been telling her how things had been going and maybe they should do a little celebration for her with the people that would be left at the house since everyone else had schedules for the day.

The solar dragon already had a gift for her younger sister. Hopefully things would go well and maybe she could talk to her... Yeah, talking would be good.

At least that was the plan. Get things ready for the little surprise with Nina, Enna, and Pomu. Enna staying behind while the other 3 get a few more things they somehow forgot and the songbird stalling just enough that Selen wouldn't go downstairs yet. Throw a lil celebration, eat some food, presents, then maybe talk with her younger sister.

Nina calling their name and seeing Enna and Selen on Selen's bedroom floor with Selen being worse for wear and the black ring around her neck was not what she had expected to happen.

"I- Wha- Wait," Elira may not be a heavenly being like Nina and Enna but she was still a Solar dragon, "Nina," she tries again, slowly this time, "What happened?"

She sees the fox spirit take a breath,

"I don't think I have the right words to explain." A frown, and her tails flourishing out, "We'd have to wait for Enna to wake up. But I have a feeling it has something to do with Selen's nightmares..."

A black like tendril catches their eyes, the ring pulsating, only stopping when Elira got close to the two on the floor.

"Or maybe it has something to do with that," The fox spirit says with a sigh.

"Elira?"

"Yeah?"

"Did... Anything else happen after you hurt Selen?"

Elira frowns, head wings low and drooping. Pomu was downstairs. Opting to stay incase anyone got home early. She's starting to think it's the fairy's way of giving them privacy. Everyone already knew what happened last time. She was grateful that they haven't asked, yet.

Elira doesn't really have an answer for Nina, she never asked how Selen was during the years they were seperated. She owes one to the other woman when she didn't press on any further.

Enna was stirring and Nina was on the younger girl immediately, helping her sit up. Making sure the songbird was alright. Nina shot her a look that she doesn't know what to do with.

It wasn't long until her and Selen were the only ones left in the room, a vague instruction of making sure Selen was put on her bed.

Elira can't remember the last time that she had carried Selen, or put her to bed. She took her time making sure Selen was tucked in well, not missing how easily she had picked up her younger sister from the floor and the way her head lolled about. Limp like a puppet with no strings. She brushes Selen's bangs, carding a hand through the messy purple hair. Patting it and scratching at her little sister's headwings. Seeing how everything just leaves Selen's body. The stress, the tension, the exhaustion... The way Selen seemed to lean more into her hand.

God what Elira wouldn't do just so she could turn back time. Do it right the first time. Be the big sister everyone says she was to her own little sister back then. Maybe they wouldn't even be in this situation right now. Maybe everything would've been normal and she would have been that teasing but supportive older sister that Selen could turn to and ask for advice.

But that's not how it works and there's only so many maybe's that Elira could think of.

The door clicks and whines and that's when Elira was pulled out of her thoughts, Nina siting down on the other side of the bed, giving her a tired look. Doing the same as she did and playing with some of Selen's hair.

"Where's Enna?" She asks, voice low, trying not to break the peace. Concern written on her face as she thinks about one of her long time bestfriends.

Nina sighs, the sight of Enna pleading to her to let her stay with Selen, to watch over the other girl until she wakes up, flashing to the forefront of her mind. Sighing again when she looks at how careful Elira plays with Selen's headwings, even reaching for her hand, holding it gently, and Nina smiles.

"She's fine, dear. Just a little frazzled."

She tells Elira about how Enna would watch over the half-dragon. Not missing the longing on the solar dragon's face before steeling into a resolve.

Hm.

Maybe things would get better from here on out at least.

Selen wakes up a few days later. Staring at her ceiling all too familiar to her with all the glow in the dark stars scattered across it. She had been bored (lonely) one night so she decided to give her ceiling something that reminder her of the night sky. She didn't move, just stared at it, the moonlight giving her room a soft glow.

There was a weight on her chest. An actual physical weight this time. In normal circumstances she would have freaked out once she realized that the weight was there but the past few days- no, weeks even, were hardly normal. Besides, she had felt this weight once in the past.

"Selen?" The songbird says, sleep still in her voice looking up at her blearily. The unsaid question already heard just from the way Enna says her name.

"Go back to sleep, Enna" she says, voice raspy from disuse but still soft for the barely awake girl. "We can talk in the morning." She continues, giving the girl on top of her a small, tired smile. Her dragon hand going up to give Enna's headwings a gentle scratch just how Enna gave them to her. The songbird humming before snuggling into her once more, never letting up from where she was sleeping.

Yeah. They could talk tomorrow. Should talk tomorrow. Enna had a feeling that she might freak it if they dont. It's a bit overdue even now with her sleep addled brain.

Selen gives the sleeping girl a kiss on the forehead after sometime, not really thinking too much about it. A silent thank you to the songbird. The half-dragon felt a soft kiss pressed to her neck a few moments later, a whisper just loud enough for her to hear. She holds the songbird tighter, earning a pleased hum before she felt Enna breathing steadily again, falling asleep once more.

Selen's mind, was for once, quiet. None of the worry, the anxiety, nor the fear that was always present in there bothering her. Selen was just. Existing. And she was thankful for that. Sleep finds her once more after a few more minutes of staring at the ceiling, Enna's soft breaths lulling her to sleep.

Maybe things would actually be better now.
