Chapter Text
“Sorry kid I’ll be home late ther should be some leftovers in the fridge, love u!!”
There weren't any leftovers in the fridge. Your father had gotten today mixed up with yesterday, when he also came home late. It’s fine, really it's fine. You tried not to feel too disappointed and turned your phone off, grabbing some cereal and sitting on the old couch. Feeling alone in the empty house, you turned on the tv to be met with Izuku Midoriya’s face. You clenched your fists, suddenly losing your appetite. While a pit formed in your stomach. ‘Of course some channel had to play a rerun of the UA sports festival,’ you thought.
You did feel slightly guilty for your dislike towards midoriya. He hasn’t actually done anything to you, but you couldn't help but feel like he was replacing you. Not only as a successor but as your dads kid. Your father, Yagi Toshinori, the number one hero, had taken Midoriya under his wing to be his successor and the next holder of One for All. And that made you feel terrible.
—---------------------------------------------------------
You remember when you first heard of One for All. You weren’t supposed to know, your father wanted to keep you safe and away from any of his hero business. You were told he was hurt by a very bad villain, that's why he was in the hospital. Your father was in his room while you sat outside, in the hallway. You hated being in his room, you always thought your father was invincible, but seeing him lying broken on the hospital bed had scared you. You were bored, watching the clock tick by when you heard shouting from his room.
“You can’t keep going on like this All Might!”
“As long as All for One is around I’m the only one who can stop him!” Your fathers voice echoed outside into the desolate hallway, silence following his shout. It felt like the quietness was choking you. It was silent until he spoke up again, “who else will protect everyone?” His voice wavered. “I need to keep going until I find someone to pass One for All too.” The door slowly opened before someone shakily stepped out. Nighteye had exited the room looking frazzled, he didn't even look in your direction. He walked away towards the elevator in defeat.
That was the last time you saw your fathers sidekick.
Later on you had questioned him on his quirk and he finally told you. You were in disbelief, your father, the shining symbol of peace was once quirkless! You were happy to finally share something in common with him. You didn't even know quirks could be passed on from person to person! When you had asked him to be his successor he quickly shot it down, claiming he didn't want you to get hurt. Even though you felt sad and rejected, you tried to not let it get to you.
You wouldn’t piece it together until you were older, the amount of damage being all might left on his body. And years later when the green haired kid showed up you wondered why you weren't picked. You had felt betrayed, you were also Quirkless like the green haired boy, why did he have that you didn’t?
Before, you had felt like your father was ashamed of your lack of a quirk. That’s why you had to keep your parentage a secret. He didn’t want anyone to know the Number one hero has a quirkless child. You couldn’t help but be jealous of the todoroki kid. Endeavor had been very open about his child (who was only a couple years younger than you) and he was the number two hero. You later realized that he just wanted to keep you safe. He didn’t want to put a target on your back for possible villain attacks, But there is still some lingering resentment towards him.
At least you had the piano. Everytime you would visit your dad, you would run to the dusty piano in the guest room. You would play it for hours with a smile on your face. You loved the feeling of the keys and the sound echoing from it. Even though it sounded awful to everyone else. After you moved into his house you finally started learning. Your teacher would come to your house for two hours every day. She is a kind older woman who always goes to your recitals and competitions. She’s like a grandmother and one of the few adults you could count on. Plus, one of the only people that genuinely cared for you.
—-----------------------------------------------------------
You knew you weren’t planned. Your mother told you that she and your father had met in middle school and reunited later into his career. He thought it was just a normal hookup until she broke the news to him a couple weeks later. But that didn't stop your fathers job.
Your mother was your main caretaker, you really only saw your father on holidays and a couple times a month. Even then he would sometimes flake because some hero thing came up, he was always a workaholic. That’s how the first eight years of your life were. Up until your mom abandoned you at your fathers doorstep.
Part of you still loved your mom but hated her at the same time. She had been so sweet, you adored her so much. She was truly your entire world. When you had gotten diagnosed as quirkless it took a toll on her. Others treated her like she was cursed to have given birth to such a ‘worthless’ thing. All the remarks and comments started getting to her.
She started neglecting you, leaving you to take care of yourself. She stayed in her room all day, she didn't work since your father paid for both of your necessities. You avoided her whenever she was in the kitchen. Her eyes seemed so empty yet crazy, you thought she would lunge at you. It was like living with a roommate who ignored your entire existence.
One time when preparing your food, you accidentally sliced your hand. When you saw your father the next day he was shocked and interrogated you on what had happened. You told him the truth, about prepping your own food, getting yourself ready, walking to the convenience store. You felt a bit giddy, you could take care of yourself with no help. You felt so proud of yourself, and maybe your father would be proud too! Instead worry and shock painted his face, he had excused himself to his bedroom and you sat alone in the kitchen. You tuned out the muffled shouts.
Next thing you know you were living at his house. You never heard from your mom again and to be honest you weren’t sure you wanted to.
Your relationship with your father hasn't really improved since you started living together. To be honest he didn’t know how to connect with you. It didn’t help that around this time, you were starting to lose interest in heros, which his entire life centered around.
Your father was very busy, still is, so you grew up with a nanny, Though she left when you turned thirteen. You would occasionally see the man at meals, but that’s if you were lucky. You two talked but you still felt as if there was a giant gap between you, it just felt like small talk.
You were frustrated with your father that he hadn’t tried to spend more time with you. That he didn't try enough to get to know his own kid. He always had time to save people, attend hero events, teach his students, but no time for his own child. To be honest you don't remember the last time you actually did something together.
It only got worse when he started training Midoriya. You understood he didn’t have a father present in his life, but why did it have to be your dad? He seemed to be such a better parent to that kid than he ever was for you.
When he did have time to eat dinner together, he would ramble on about “Young Midoriya.” Sometimes you would hear them on the phone together, your father always seemed more carefree talking to him. He’s even brought him to your house, but you avoid him and only say hi.
The worst was when you were walking around the city and saw them together. It was the restaurant you had been begging him to go to. They sat in a booth closest to the window laughing. Their smiles were so bright it seemed as if the snow started melting. Suddenly, everything became muffled like you were dropped into the middle of the ocean. You numbly walked back home with tears freezing on your face.
You had just wanted to feel wanted by him, to have his approval, but it was all getting taken away by someone else.
It felt even worse when he took Midoriya to I-island. He always took you whenever he visited, it was when you got to see your cousin and uncle (in everything but blood). People who you felt actually wanted to see you, and loved you. You adored hanging out with Melissa. You had so much fun running around the island, listening to her rant about her newest ideas, and having sleepovers in her room. Especially when you two would have a spa day and drag your uncle into it. It was also nice to know another quirkless person you could relate to. Even though her experiences with being quirkless were very different from yours.
You had always got the paternal love from your Uncle David that you lacked. The two of you would have little coffee chats early in the morning, help him in the lab, and tell him about whatever piece you were learning. You would tell him almost everything in your life, except for the problems with your dad. You didn't want him to be upset at his best friend.
Whenever you were with them it felt like a real family. The four of you would hangout. You would have movie nights and meals together, dinner was always lively. And you would always play the piano for them.
You felt so disappointed when he told you couldn’t go. “Besides,” he said, “it would be suspicious if we were seen together with all these heroes and reporters around.”
You nodded numbly and left the room. You jumped onto your bed, letting your pillow soak up the tears. You knew you could always facetime them but it wasn't the same. The ache in your heart weighed heavy, you missed them so so so much. You couldn't help but wonder if they were doing everything without you. Would the rest of your family also replace you?
—------------------------------------------------------
Distantly, you heard dinging coming from your phone. You suddenly snapped back into reality. Checking it, you saw two notifications from dear ol’ dad.
“srry i won't be home tonight”
“I’ll see you at breakfst tmr”
Angry, you threw your phone across the room. Hot tears fell down your face, you were always such a crybaby. You don’t know why it still hurts, you should be used to it.. right? You wanted to get away from here, from this house. You glared at your soggy bowl of cereal, trying to get your breathing under control. Why couldn’t you ever have a good day? The want to get out of the house was becoming overwhelmingly unbearable. So you quickly changed, grabbing your wallet, keys, and your, surprisingly still intact, phone on the ground.
About to open the front door, you paused. You looked back towards the guest room turned piano studio. You have a recital soon held at your school. The school you attend is a nice highschool well known for their liberal arts programs.
You wondered for a second if instead you should practice, but you chose not. That’s all you've been doing for the past couple of weeks. You needed a physical and mental break from everything, especially after today.
With a sigh you twisted open the front door. The cool air hits your face and you shove your hands in your pockets. The weather has been changing so much this week but it wasn’t too cold. You started heading down the street with no clear destination. The brief moment of clarity at the front door helped calm you down a little, but the anger was still there.
You weren’t sure what time it was but you bet it's past curfew. Even though it was late the city was still pretty awake. Lights from inside shops illuminated the streets. People walked past you, some giving you questioning looks. Maybe because they think you’re too young or the dried tears on your face.
You kept on walking until the streets got darker and the people walking twindled. To be honest you didn’t know where you were. Stopping in front of a shop, you glanced up. It was a tiny, cute, cat-themed cafe! Even better, it is also open 24/7.
A bell chimed softly as you opened the door. The warm air instantly hits your face, making it feel a little too warm. The inside was decorated adorably with cat memorabilia and a single worker at the register. Soft music played in the background. You walked to the register and ordered a muffin and a cat themed frappuccino. You softly thanked the worker and now had to decide where to sit.
A couple sat at one side of the room and a scruffy man sat on the other. The couple was being all lovey dovey, gross, so you decided to sit at a table next to the man. He looked at you for a second before looking away and taking a sip of his drink. He had long black hair and looked to be wearing some kind of black jumpsuit with yellow goggles. He looked familiar but you couldn’t remember who he was. You quietly downed your food and drink while scrolling on your phone. You were finally feeling better, although a little sleepy. You checked the clock and it said 11:42 p.m. It’s past curfew but not that late. No wonder the place was mostly empty. You didn’t wanna walk back especially since you were tired. What harm would it do to take a little rest here? Laying your head on your arms, you decided to close your eyes a little.
“Hey kid,” you looked up dazed, did you just fall asleep? Looking around your eyes landed on the man. At your right the man was looking at you with his arms and legs crossed. “Don’t you think you should be heading back now?” he asked. “Huh?” He raised his eyebrow and glanced at the clock. Following his gaze you saw it was 2:37 a.m. Looking around the room, the couple had left and the worker was sitting on their phone. The man had 2 more cups of coffee on his table.
Throwing your head back onto your arm you grumbled, “Don’t wanna go back..” He sighed and looked back towards you. “C’mon it's too late for you to be out and I wanna go home.” He was waiting for you? Now that you're thinking of it, isn't he a U.A. staff member? You’re pretty sure you saw him at that press conference thing. So he is most likely a hero. It’s his job to make sure teenagers don't do dumb shit like staying out too late.
You lifted your head making eye contact with him. “Listen I don't know anything about your homelife, but I'm sure your parents would want you home.” ‘I guess it wouldn't be too bad going home now. It’s not like he’s there anyway,’ you thought. “Okay old man,” you said standing up. He frowned but he didn't look upset. “See you mister,” you said with a smile. And there you were out the door.
On the walk back home you felt as if someone was watching, but not in a creepy way. Your guess was that hero guy making sure you get home safe. Now that you’re thinking about it he probably works with your father. You unlocked the door and turned around. You could barely make him out on top of a building, his yellow goggles giving him away. With a wave to him you stepped inside, locking the door.
Flopping onto your bed, you grabbed onto your favorite stuffed animal. Everything from today left you exhausted, even though you had a nap. Maybe tomorrow you would call your grandpa to cheer yourself up. As you closed your eyes you couldn't help but think of the guy from the cafe. It was kinda funny to see that scruffy guy in a cute cat cafe. Giggling to yourself, you finally drifted off to sleep.
