Work Text:

Evie loves beautiful things.

The pictures in the books that her mother had forbidden her from reading, the makeup she stole from random people, the view of Auradon from the isle and a certain purple-haired girl.

She wants to be one of the beautiful things she loves, too. But her mother thinks otherwise.

She tries not to think too much about it,with her friends constantly by her side and reassuring her that she was the fairest on the isle, easily surpassing her own mother.

So when Evie finds herself in a field of beautiful and colorful flowers, she feels happier than ever.

Mal was standing beside her, expression less than pleased. It made Evie’s heart sink a little. She knows it will be hard for her friend to get used to this place.

But they don’t have to,when they are going to steal the wand and leave this place as soon as they do so.

She spots tulips in various different colors, her eyes lighting up in awe at the sight.

Maybe Mal would be interested once she tells her more? Evie wanted to lighten up the mood.

“Mal,look! They’re so pretty.. I heard they’re called ‘Tulips’ according to Ben!” She points, excitedly showing her friend.

Mal only hummed in response, her eyes looking anywhere else but at the Tulips.

“Look at that one over there! Those must be the ‘roses’!” Evie had only seen them in pictures and dress patterns, reaching out to touch the petals fondly. “I didn’t know they come in colors other than red!”

She can see Mal nodding at the corner of her eye. Mal wasn’t enjoying this in the slightest, and she can tell by the look in her eyes.

She knew Mal well, being able to guess what the fae felt just by the look in her eyes. Whether she was mad, sad, annoyed or excited.

“Not having fun?” She decided to ask, looking at the purple-haired girl. The latter smiles at her fondly.

“Not really.. it’s so grossly colorful here..”

“Then that’s okay! Maybe we should-”

“It’s fine.”

Evie paused when her best friend spoke up.

“You can have a look at them for a bit longer. I’ll be under that big tree while waiting, okay?”

The blue-haired girl was hesitant.

“Okay.. but we can leave if you really want to!”

Mal shook her head and left for the big tree.

Evie looked down, trying to think of a way to cheer the girl up. Maybe.. maybe she should pick a flower? Mal’s favorite color was purple, she could manage with that.

She stood up and looked around, admiring the sights in front of her and smiling. She was happy,to say the least.

Evie looked and looked, coming across different kinds of flowers. There were purple tulips too,but the girl ought to pick something with a good meaning. Not that purple tulips didn’t have a good meaning,of course. Evie only thought that she could do better than that,so she looked further. Plus, royalty and elegance wasn’t really Mal’s thing, especially royalty, much less elegance.

The girl walked further, looking at bright fields in front of her.

And there it was.

“Bingo.”

She whispered to herself, running towards purple roses. They weren’t exactly purple, just a deep shade of magenta.

It sort of matched Mal’s hair, the fae would love it!

Magenta roses meant romantic love.

Something Evie would never want to admit out loud to anyone but her mirror.

Truth is,the girl had always loved Mal beyond the line of friendship. She can’t admit it out loud, never will.

It all dates back to when she met the girl, striking emerald eyes caught her attention immediately.

“Evie? You’re coming,aren’t you,lovely?”

The way she said the words back then made Evie’s heart race. She remembered trying to keep her composure.

Evie snapped herself out of it,staring at the rose in her hand once more. She picked a few more, some purely for her to admire or use in her designs.

She walked back to where she was. Evie admiring more flowers on her way back.

She sees Ben standing near Mal,the two chatting about something.

Something burns.

Evie walks up to them, smiling happily. Holding the rose behind her back, she approaches the two.

“What are you guys talking about?” She asks, curious and tilting her head a little.

Ben was opening his mouth to answer, but Evie cuts him off by shoving the rose at Mal. The fae blinks.

“Look,M! I got us some flowers. This one is purple,do you like it?”

The shorter girl takes it from Evie’s hand rather hesitantly. Mal inspects the rose.

Ben tries to explain something to her, getting abruptly cut off by Mal. The prince laughed awkwardly.

“Do you guys want to make flower crowns?”

Evie had read about them somewhere, she likes the idea.

“That sounds fun!” She can hear herself say, then turning to Mal. Her eyes were practically pleading for Mal to join them.

Evie knew Mal wasn’t one who’s able to resist her, ever.

“I’ll just watch.”

She smiles at the words, grabbing Mal by her hand and leading her into the flower field along with Ben.

“My girlfriend taught me how to make these when we were younger.” Ben says, putting flowers together with an expertise expected of a princess. Evie watches in awe, imitating his movements. In a moment, she finishes her own flower crown.

It was a combination of bright, colorful flowers she had picked based on how they’d look together. It turned out beautiful,Evie’s eyes practically sparkling at the sight.

Ben’s was colorful,too.

“Yours is so colorful,Ben!” She compliments, comparing hers and Bens flower crowns together.

“Are we done here?”

Evie could feel the slight tinge of annoyance from Mal’s words.

Then the girl had an idea.

“Just one moment!”

She ought to make another flower crown for Mal,so that all three of them could have one. She frantically looked for flowers that would go well together, while also hurrying so that Mal’s mood doesn’t worsen more.

“I have a meeting with the council right now,see you around!” Ben said and hurriedly got up,waving the two goodbye and dashing away.

It was back to Evie and Mal alone.

She was happily making the flower crown, smiling to herself and imagining how it would look on Mal. She’d look pretty in anything, really. Evie imagines the bright colors contrasting on Mal’s purple hair.

As she puts the last flowers together, she turns to Mal and puts the flower crown on the girl’s head.

It was exactly like she imagined,if not prettier.

“It looks good on you,Mal.”

Of course it does.

She puts on her own flower crown, smiling at Mal. She can’t see what hers looks like on her head. But Evie grabs her mirror, looking at her reflection. The crown looked good on her, too.

“Yours look good on you, too. It stands out.” Mal says, looking at her and Evie’s heart flutters.

“I know right!”

She giggles.

“Here!”

She hands Mal her mirror, wanting Mal to also see how beautiful she looks.

“Do you like it?”

“Yeah.”

Mal replies, returning the mirror to Evie. Evie pulls her close.

“Now we’re matching!”

She sees Mal nodding at her. Evie swore she could see something glimmer in Mal’s eyes, something she couldn’t understand.

Odd.

“Alright, let’s go..” Mal gets up and Evie follows. She picks out one last rose on her way back.

The two chatted on the way to their dorm. As soon as they got back,Mal picks up her sketchbook and starts sketching away.

“Seems like you enjoyed your time there.”

She teases, seeing how Mal was so eager to draw the flower field like she had suggested. Evie laughs, watching the girl.

Evie loved the flower field.

Other than that, she also loves spending time with Mal like she just did. The flower crown was still on their heads. The fae looked beautiful in it.

Evie loves a certain beautiful person.
