Work Text:
Another day spent stuck in his office. The clock read 2am, but Doppo knew he wasn’t going to be home for another few hours. If he was unlucky, he wouldn’t make it home at all. He knew Hifumi was becoming increasingly worried about him, but he had assured him everything was alright at work. Or, at least as alright as it could be.
His head was starting to hurt from how long he had been staring at his computer screen. He blinked, trying to stay awake. He looked over at his empty coffee cup and sighed. Another cup it was. He wasn’t going to survive without more caffeine.
“Ya really have to stop workin’ so late.” A gruff voice spoke into his ear, causing Doppo to flinch and nearly punch the person in the face. Before he could however, the man grabbed his wrist. “Are ya gonna do that every time someone spooks ya?”
Doppo turned to see Samatoki standing behind him. Relief spread throughout his body. At least he knew he wasn’t being going to be robbed or killed, though he guesses that would have been better than being holed up in this empty office.
“Samatoki…” Doppo breathed, a small smile settling on his face. It had been a week since he last saw his boyfriend, both busy from their respective work schedules. “I missed you.”
“If ya missed me you would stop working right now. You’ve done enough already.” Samatoki clicked his tongue, pulling Doppo to his feet. Doppo stumbled, crashing into him. He shifted all of his weight onto him, settling into the comfort of his arms. He closed his eyes for a brief moment, all of his exhaustion crashing into him at once.
“Sleep, I’ll take care of everythin’ from here.” And who was he to decline that offer? Realistically, he knew he should have stayed awake and finished the last of his work, but this exact scenario had happened so many times already, he was more than willing to put his faith in Samatoki to finish things up.
He let his exhaustion consume him, falling asleep in a matter of minutes.
When he woke up he was in his own bed snuggled up close to his boyfriend. He blinked slowly, his eyes adjusting to the darkness of the room. Samatoki had a hand in his hair, slowly running his fingers through it absentmindedly while scrolling through his phone.
The way his face was illuminated by the phone screen softened his features. He was.. Gorgeous.
“I don’t get it.” He suddenly blurted out. Samatoki perked up and looked at him in confusion. There was no taking back what he said now, he just had to continue.
“I don’t get why you’re with me…” He sat up fully, digging his nails into his palms. “I work long hours.. I barely get to spend time with you. I know you were interested in me because you thought I was strong, but I’m not. It’s not to say I don’t like being with you! I do… I just feel… Like you could do better than me.” Doppo looked at his hands, not wanting to make eye contact with Samatoki.
He was quiet for a long time. Dammit, he shouldn’t have said anything. By now he probably messed up their whole relationship and Samatoki wouldn’t want to be with him. If he were him, he would have broken up with himself months ago.
“You’ve got it wrong.”
Doppo whipped his head up, staring at Samatoki. “Huh?”
“I was interested in ya at the start because of the Division Rap Battle, yeah, but I love you for more than just your strength even if ya don’t give yourself more credit for it. We spend plenty of time together, and our jobs get busy sometimes. We can’t help it.” He shrugged. “But we’re makin’ it work.”
Just hearing those words made Doppo feel at ease. Samatoki really didn’t hate being with him… It was slightly shocking to hear. He was sure they wouldn’t last more than a month, but here they were, already together for nearly two years. “Thank you… I’m sorry.”
“Nothin’ to apologize for.” Samatoki smiled, holding his face gently. Unlike his usual cocky smile, this one was soft, secret. It was only for him to see. “I love you, Doppo.”
“I love you too.” Doppo surged forward and pressed his lips against Samatokis. It only lasted for a brief moment, but it was good. Sweet. Everything he could have wanted.
Samatoki turned off his phone and set it on the table, shifting so that he was settled comfortably under the blanket. Doppo followed suit, pressing as close against him as possible.
He was about to fall asleep again when he heard Samatoki’s voice, muffled against his hair.
“Thank you.”
