Gay's Still the Word

Summary:

Jason couldn’t quite stop the hitch in his breath as Dick buried a hand in his hair and used the grip to tip his head back so he could deepen the kiss. Jason reacted in kind and slipped the hand that had been on the back of Dick’s neck up into his hair as he tightened the arm he had around the other man’s back. Dick shifted some of his weight onto his other forearm, so he wasn’t completely crushing Jason into the bed, without breaking the kiss.

But Jason couldn’t help but tense up as Dick ground his hips against Jason’s thigh.

Dick pulled back, breathing slightly faster than normal through his swollen lips. “Not tonight?”

“Not tonight.” Jason echoed. “Sorry.”

Dick just smiled softly as he readjusted how he was lying over Jason so his hips weren’t touching him anymore. “I thought I’d already told you to stop apologising, Jay.”

A year on from his sexuality crisis, Jason's still figuring a few things out.

Written for DC Aspec Week 2024

Notes:

Happy Ace Week!!

This is a follow on for the fic I did for DC-Aspec-Week last year, and while I think this could be read as a standalone, I'd suggest reading the other one first!

I still think it's hilarious my birthday falls in Ace Week, and even if I'm posting a day early this year, this is kind of a birthday gift to myself, especially because this is just self-indulgent fluff!

I hope you like it!!

Work Text:

Jason shrugged as Dick gently nuzzled their heads together.

“I’m happy just doing this, or cuddling up and watching a movie or reading, little wing.” Dick said before pressing a kiss to the side of Jason’s mouth.

Jason lent into him. “I know, it’s just…”

“I know.” Dick said quietly.

They’d had a lot of conversations over the past eight months about sex and what it meant to them both. It took a while, but Jason was eventually in a position that he could and wanted to try. Dick was exactly as Jason thought he would be; sweet and gentle and more than willing to take charge. Jason enjoyed it, and they’d started having sex on a semi-frequent basis. But Jason had to be in the right headspace for it and he was well aware that their sexlife was… lacking compared to most normal couples. Though, as Dick kept reminding him whenever he used that word, there was really no such thing as normal

“Hey.” Dick said, carding a careful hand through his curls to pull his attention back to him. “I can practically hear you thinking, care to share with the class?”

“I think you already know what I’m thinking about.” Jason said with a lopsided smile as he bumped his nose against Dick’s.

Dick hummed. “You need another reminder about how perfectly happy I am with our relationship?”

Jason shook his head. “No, I know. It’s just…”

“Brains are weird.” Dick smiled.

“Brains are weird.” Jason agreed, matching his smile.

“Soooo, have you decided on which of the options you want to choose for the rest of the night?” Dick asked, still smiling.

“What were the options again?”

“We can carry on making out, or we can have a cuddle night with books or a movie?”

Jason debated each one before answering. “ Or , we could watch a boring movie that inevitably ends up with us making out anyway.”

Dick laughed. “That’s definitely something I’m onboard with.”

“-yeah, no, it sounds really good, you should be proud of yourself… He’s just got home, so I’ll ask him and then call you back later… Yeah… See you!”

Jason looked over his shoulder at Dick with a raised eyebrow as he toed his boots off by the front door.

“Donna.” Dick said in answer to Jason’s look. “She’s been accepted into a photography exhibition at the Tate Modern in London in October and she was wondering if we wanted to go.”

“And?” Jason pressed as he dropped his bag onto the table and made his way over to the sofa as Dick made grabby hands at him.

“And,” Dick started as he yanked Jason down into his lap (ignoring Jason’s yelp and muttered asshole ). “It coincides with our first anniversary, so I thought we could make a proper trip out of it.”

Jason couldn’t help the soft smile that came over his face as he readjusted so he was properly sitting across Dick’s thighs.

“What?” Dick asked, cocking his head like an inquisitive bird.

“You’re such a romantic sap.” Jason said, his smile not wavering.

Dick pinched his side. “Brat. You love it.”

“Never said I didn’t.” Jason said softly, not sure he would ever quite get used to the purely loving and fond look Dick gave him. “I think that’s a great idea. Is it just going to be us for the show, or has she invited the rest of the Titans?”

“It’s like a three month thing, so I think she’s staggering everyone so she doesn’t get overwhelmed. I might have asked for the second half of October slot on purpose though.” Dick grinned, clearly pleased with himself, and Jason couldn’t begrudge him it.

“Like I said, sap.” Jason reiterated with a flick to his ear.

Dick’s grin didn’t falter as he grabbed Jason’s hip with one hand, cradled the back of his head with the other and then used his legs to flip them so Jason was lying on his back on the sofa with Dick between his legs. Jason let out an oomf as his back hit the cushions, but Dick’s hand on his head made sure he didn’t concuss himself on the sofa arm.

Dickhead .” Jason mumbled, barely suppressing the automatic urge to buck Dick off and throw him into the coffee table. But they both knew Jason wasn’t that opposed to being manhandled.

Dick carried on grinning. “You done?”

“Yeah.” Jason said, sticking his chin out with a pout that made Dick chuckle. “I do think London’s a great idea though. There’s a few bookshops I want to take you to.”

“Yeah?” Dick asked, his grin smoothing out into his normal smile.

“Yeah, especially one in particular.” Jason said, using his hand to shift the strands of hair that had fallen into Dick’s eyes back behind his ear. “You need a haircut.”

“I thought you liked it longer.” Dick said with a smirk, dropping down onto his forearms to knock their noses together.

“I do, but this is pushing it a bit. I don’t want a return of mulletwing, or you getting shot on patrol because you can’t see a perp with a gun.” Jason said.

Mulletwing .” Dick muttered under his breath with his nose scrunched up. “You’ve been spending too much time with Roy and Kori.”

“I don’t need to, I saw it firsthand myself. If it wasn’t for the open chested suit, I think it would have killed my attraction to you.” Jason said with an amused smile.

“You make me sound like such an exhibitionist.”

“Well…”

Jason laughed as Dick pulled back to smack his shoulder.

“You’re so mean to me.” Dick said with a pout.

“You make it so easy though.” Jason said, his laugh turning into a full on cackle as Dick sat back on his heels with an affronted look on his face.

“That’s it, I’m limiting the amount of time you’re allowed to spend with Roy and Kori.” Dick crossed his arms over his chest.

“Who are you, my dad?” Jason said, and immediately regretted it when a mischievous glint appeared in Dick’s eyes. “Jesus christ, no , get your fuckin’ mind out of the gutter, Dickie.”

It was Dick’s turn to cackle as Jason covered his face with his arms.

“I think this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. I want to be buried with this pastry.” Dick said, moaning so sinfully Jason could feel his cheeks go pink and causing several people nearby to shoot them a look.

“Jesus christ, you drama queen.” Jason muttered before taking another bite of his own chocolate and coffee beignet. He silently agreed with Dick, but like hell he was going to make a spectacle of it. “Donna was right though, I think this is one of the best bakeries I’ve been to in London.”

Dick hummed in agreement. “Maybe we should have grabbed one for Donna.”

“I don’t think these would survive being carried through central London all day.” Jason said before eating his last bite.

“Yeah, you’re probably right.” Dick agreed as he wiped the chocolate and powdered sugar from his lips with a napkin. He gathered both of their rubbish and threw it in the bin as Jason stood up and brushed some powdered sugar off his jeans. “Right, where’s this bookshop you wanted to take me to?”

“Round the corner and then down the next street on the left.” Jason said, taking Dick’s offered hand and leading the other man back onto the main road. The streets weren’t too crowded as they’d avoided the English schools’ half term week, which fell over the following week and Halloween. Jason was glad, he felt like he didn’t have to be as on guard when there was less of a crowd; it was easier to pretend they were just a normal couple without their night jobs.

“This is it.” Jason said, coming to a stop outside of the white painted shop.

“Gay’s the Word.” Dick read out loud before looking at Jason with a smile. “Seems like my kind of bookshop.”

“I was hoping you’d say that.” Jason returned his smile as he led the way through the door. There were a few more people browsing compared to the last time he’d been in, but that honestly helped the warm and cosy atmosphere.

The woman behind the till was the same one who’d helped him the year before, and she greeted them both with a smile, which they both returned with a greeting of their own.

Jason made a beeline straight for the asexual section, aware of Dick following behind him. Dick squeezed his hand when he came to a stop before letting go and moving off to browse on his own. He didn’t need another information book, so he pulled out the new fiction books in the section one by one before deciding on the one he thought sounded most like his thing. He turned around to find Dick crouched on the floor by the general queer fiction section looking between two books. Jason left him to it for the time being and turned his attention to the small secondhand books section. He’d always preferred buying secondhand books; he didn’t know if it was a leftover from his childhood when that was often all he could get, or if it was a nostalgia thing, knowing they’d been loved by someone else before him.

He chose a gay romcom that sounded cliche, but also the kind of break he might need from his normally serious taste, and then walked back over to Dick.

“I can’t decide.” Dick whined as he stood back up, his left knee cracking with an old injury. “Which do you think sounds better?”

Jason took both books from him and handed Dick his own picks to hold onto while he read the blurbs of both. “They both sound good. Why don’t you just get both? It’s not like we have to worry about a luggage weight limit on Bruce’s jet.”

“That’s a good point.” Dick said, handing Jason his books back so Jason could take them all to the counter.

“Hi, did you find everything you were looking for?” The woman asked as she took the books from Jason.

Dick folded back into his side as Jason answered. “Yes, thank you. Though we’ll also grab a tote bag.”

“Of course!”

“I'd also like to pay forward £30 for the board, in three £10s.” Jason said, pointing to the cork board that contained a bunch of hand written vouchers that people could use towards their purchase without feeling judged.

“Thank you, that would be brilliant.” She said with a sincere smile.

“I’m not sure if you remember me, but I came in just over a year ago, having a bit of a crisis-”

“Yes! You were looking for books on asexuality.” The woman’s smile grew.

“Yeah.” Jason nodded, matching her smile as Dick squeezed his arm.

She looked between them with a soft smile. “I hope you figured everything out.”

“Yeah, I did- we did.” Jason said, turning to find a similar soft smile on Dick’s face.

“That’s great, congratulations!” She said with a grin as she typed the final amount in the card machine as Jason pulled out his card.

Jason paid as Dick grabbed the bag. “Thank you.”

“Have a good day, and I hope we’ll see you both again soon.” The woman said, still smiling softly at them.

“Fingers crossed.” Jason said with a smile as Dick led him out of the door by the hand. They stopped on the pavement outside for a moment while Jason tried to decide where he wanted to take Dick next.

“Thank you.” Dick said softly, squeezing Jason’s hand to pull him out of his thoughts. “For sharing that with me, especially today. Happy anniversary, little wing.”

Jason gave into the urge and leaned down to press his lips to Dick’s in a chaste kiss before pulling back again. “Happy anniversary, Dickie.”

Notes:

Someone across the street choses the perfect moment to take a picture of the bookshop with them both kissing in front of it and before they know it they've gone viral for how cute they look together!
