“Man, that pizza hit the spot.” Boombox remarked as he opened the door to Skateboard’s apartment. The place was small, with a counter to his right and two doors to the bedroom and bathroom to his left. Boombox passed the door off to Skateboard, who promptly shut and locked it.
“Yeah bro, it was fire.” Skateboard clicked his tongue, taking off his helmet and setting it on the counter. “What do ya’ wanna do now? We could listen to music, play that one game you like… whatever you want, really.” He smiled at Boombox, running his fingers through his tousled hair.
Boombox gazed at Skateboard’s face, getting lost in his adorable eyes and cute hair. After only a few moments, Boombox forced himself to look away. “We could—uh—listen to music. That would be nice. Yeah.” Shit, I can’t even form sentences. This is bad, he’s gonna find out, Boombox berated himself, pushing his feelings for his best friend as far down as he could manage.
Skateboard smirked at him and opened the door to his bedroom. He sat down on his queen-sized bed, gesturing for Boombox to sit next to him. “Turn on the music, dude.” Boombox slipped over to Skateboard, unlocking his phone.
“Aight bro, here’s your music.” Boombox hit play on his phone, an upbeat song swimming out of the speakers. “Ooh, I like this song.” He started kicking his feet to the beat of the song and then handed his phone over to Skateboard. “If you don’t like any song that comes on, just skip it,” he said with a warm smile.
“I’ve never heard this before, is it new?” Boombox looked longingly into Skateboard’s eyes, soaking in the demon before him. He was lost in thoughts of love before Skateboard poked him, “you gonna answer my question or no?” He stuck his tongue out, and Boombox couldn’t hold back a blush.
“I—I only heard it a few days ago. It’s a good song, right?” Boombox stuttered out, changing his gaze to rest on Skateboard’s knees. He hummed along to the song, distracting himself from his feelings.
“Yeah, it’s a pretty good song.” Skateboard bounced his leg, focusing on listening to the lyrics and becoming engrossed with the music. Unlike you, you lovesick freak, Boombox yelled at himself.
The two zoned out, letting the song replace their thoughts. Soon enough, the song ended, and another one took its place.
Oh no. Oh fuck. Boombox knew what song this was, oh god I’m not ready to confess, oh please no, please have him skip it—
“I’ve never heard this song, I didn’t know you liked this type of music.” Skateboard naively remarked, turning his face and looking at Boombox, confusion pressed into his features.
“I just like the song. That’s it.” Boombox shrugged, mentally preparing himself for his untimely confession. His heart pounded faster, sweat pooling in his palms.
Jenny, darling, you’re my best friend
Skateboard giggled, “didn’t know you think ‘bout me when you listen to music.” Boombox stayed silent, trying to not break down right on his bed.
But there’s a few things that you don’t know of
Boombox stopped returning Skateboard’s gestures, preparing for the chorus, his mind racing around.
Why I borrow your lipstick so often
Silence still passed between the two. From Skateboard, it was his attempt to concentrate on the music playing. From Boombox, he was trying to not cry in front of his love.
I’m using your shirt as a pillow case
More silence followed. Boombox’s heart pounded out of its chest.
I wanna ruin our friendship
We should be lovers instead
Skateboard flinched, slowly drifting his vision to rest on Boombox’s face. Boombox felt his heart fall into pieces, tears welling up in his eyes. He took a moment to look at Skateboard’s face. He looked indescribable—shock riddled his face, and whether it was good or bad, it still made Boombox turn his face to stare at his feet.
I don’t know how to say this
‘Cause you’re really my dearest friend
Skateboard averted his gaze from Boombox and turned his head away. He grasped at the sheets, gripping and releasing repeatedly.
Jenny, darling, you’re my best friend
I’ve been doing bad things that you don’t know about
Tension between the two rose as they sat in absolute silence, the one thing breaking it being the song that started it all. They refused to look at each other, knowing their friendship would never be the same.
Stealing your stuff now and then
Nothing you’d miss, but it means the world to me
Boombox could feel tears threatening to release, and he took off his visor and set it next to him. They were puffy, and he sniffled a few times.
I wanna ruin our friendship
We should be lovers inst—
Skateboard paused the song, leaving them in total silence. He slowly moved his head to look at Boombox, nerves preventing him from doing anything else.
They stayed silent and stationary, the shock of the situation washing over them. Nobody dared to move, the atmosphere in the room quickly growing tense. The first to break the silence was Boombox.
He let out a sob, tears rolling down his bright green face. “I’m sorry—I’m so so sorry—” He pulled his knees up to his face, sobbing into his legs and hiding his face from Skateboard.
Skateboard froze up, not able to respond to his best friend. “So, uhh… do you have something you want to say to me?” He internally cringed, but he couldn’t think of anything better to say. Boombox let out another sob, his breathing shaky and body trembling.
“I love you—I love you so much. And like—I know you’ll never love me back, and I’ve gone and fucked everything up, and—and—” Boombox let out another choked-out sob, pressing his legs even closer to his body.
Skateboard nervously stared at Boombox. Concern littered his bright eyes, and his face glowed with blush. He had no words, shock ripping up his voice into pieces.
Boombox sobbed again, his whole body heaving with each breath. “I—I love you, and I’ll always love you, and I don’t—” his whole body shuddered as he tried to breathe, “it just hurts you’ll never love me in the way I love you.”
“I—” Skateboard started, “did you—did you not realize I feel the same way?” He let the largest, most comforting smile overtake his face, and he patted Boombox gently on the back. “You’re getting all worked up over nothing.”
Boombox whipped his head up, locking eyes with Skateboard. “But I’m like—I’m this mess, and why would you want to bring me down—” and Skateboard cut him off with a kiss.
It wasn’t either of their firsts, but in the moment, their past didn’t matter, only their future. To Boombox, it felt like a dream come true, a product only of fantasy. He kept his stuffy eyes closed, tears still falling from them.
Skateboard moved his hand to the back of Boombox’s head, and Boombox moved his own to his waist. They stayed at a standstill for a few moments before Boombox pulled his head back.
“You—you really love me like that?” he sniffled, “you want to—you want to be with me?” He moved his hands to rest on Skateboard’s thigh, tears turning from distraught to elated. He still looked down, unable to bring himself to make eye contact.
“Yeah, dude. I love you. And I wanna be with you.” Skateboard bluntly said, ruffling Boombox’s hair. He smiled brighter than the sun, a grin of pure happiness. “I don’t care how much you think you don’t deserve me, I know I’ll love you ‘till I die.”
“I would… I would love to be your boyfriend.” Another tear ran down his flushed face, and he was shaking in his attempts to maintain composure.
“I would love to be your boyfriend, too.” Skateboard chuckled before kissing him softly, letting the world revolve around them and their love.
