Ok. Pull yourself together! So many more before you have already done this- And so many more have failed.

With a groan Ellara let her head drop onto the desk.

“Don’t start early with the brain damage. I think there’ll be lots of head bashing against walls once we actually start the course. With only so few braincells you have, it’ll be difficult for the rest of us to catch up” mentioned the guy sitting next to her.

Ellara turned her face from where she was resting it on the wooden surface “Don’t pretend you didn’t throw up twice yesterday after reading the latest reviews” she glared back.

Dylan held his hands up in surrender “Look, I paid a lot of money for my laptop!”

“Your clumsiness will break it at some point or another. So why not speed up the process by letting Dr. Talis smash it with his cane before you trip over air?”

Dylan opened his mouth to reply when the doors swung open. The rhythmic pattern of a cane tapping on the floor followed the man walking into the lecture hall. His movement was slow but calculated. His head held as high as his cheekbones. The Academy crest set distinctively against the right side of his cream sweater vest. On the opposite another had been sewn in, one Ellara failed to make out from where she was sitting further in the back.

As he reached the desk to the side of the blackboard, his intense eyes swept across the room. Ellara wasn’t aware her spine could be this straight. Next to her Dylan dried his sweaty palms on his uniform trousers.

“Good morning class. My name is Dr. Viktor Talis, and I am the biophysics professor. This is my 6th year teaching and my 2nd year as head of the physics department here at Piltover Academy.” he spoke with an accent that Ellara did not expect.

His voice rang clear throughout the room, while everyone else seemed to be holding their breath. It bounced steady, strong and confident off the walls. The latter two sounded fitting, but steady? Ellara raised a concerned eyebrow as his right leg gave a short spasm. She couldn’t see a chair anywhere near the podium from where she was sitting. The brace around it looked heavy and she felt a sudden gratitude for the chair she was currently sitting on.

“Maybe he won’t be so bad as everyone says he is. By the looks of his eye bags, he seems very relatable actually” Dylan whispered in her direction.

Ellara gave a quiet snort, turning into a cough as Dr. Talis sharp eyes rushed in her direction. She took in the dark bruises standing in contrast to is otherwise white face, making him look even paler.

“When you leave the room at the end of the lesson, you will sign next to your name onto the sheet at the door. This lecture is mandatory, and you will be present, attentive and studious. From here on now it does not matter how you got into the academy. You are all here now and that is what counts.” Dr. Talis’ expression changed from neutral to stern. “So, make every moment count-”

That’s nice Ellara managed a smile.

“Or you will fail.”

And the smile was gone.

“Now! Let’s start with the semester syllabus and then we start with the first lesson.” With that Dr. Talis turned slowly, cane gripped firmly as he made his way over to the board, pulling a projector remote out of his pocket once he firmly stood where he wanted to. Not that this man looked like he could physically do anything firmly.

Ellara wished she had fought stronger against her anxiety and sat more towards the front. His writing was as sharp as he was, but also not that big. She watched him spell BIOPHYSICS 101 onto the board and quickly pulled out her pen.

And so, it began. Two hours of frantic writing and typing from the students. Two hours of Dr. Talis confident and long, seriously, so long, equations everywhere.

“This sounds already way too advanced for the first day!” Dylan muttered.

Ellara could only sigh helplessly as she shook her cramping hand.

“I think this should suffice for our first day together, there shall be many more in the future. Although we barely scratched a single molecule today, progress waits for nobody. To keep up I expect all of you to-“ Dr. Talis paused for a moment, waving the piece of chalk around while searching for the correct word.

“- right! You have to crank it!”

Ellara could’ve sworn she saw a soft smile form on his lips, but her mind was too fried to really process any type of emotion right now other than pain. She was probably seeing it wrong anyway with the distance between her seat and the podium.

“Anyway, class dismissed! Don’t forget to sign out or you will be marked absent. Three strikes and you won’t be allowed to sit the exam end of the semester” and with a final wave of his hand, everyone started packing up.

Ellara once again let her head connect with the hard desk, Dylan patting her shoulder in sympathy.

Shuffling down the stairs of the lecture hall, she was able to catch a glimpse of the second symbol added to her professor’s vest. Some sort of red and gold hammer design graced the fabric, familiar, but she couldn’t place it. As Ellara let her gaze wander up, she starred right into golden eyes and a raised eyebrow. Blushing she rushed towards the door, searching for her name and messily scrawling her signature next to it.

Catching up with Dylan, she could’ve sworn she heard a raspy chuckle from the direction of the board.

“Well. That was surely something.”

Is it too early to drop out?

Viktor groaned as the door fell shut, leaning heavily against the podium.

Why did I throw that damn chair out again?

Taking a few deep breaths, and turning of the projector, Viktor took his bag and made his way to exit, taking the attendance sheet with him. Smiling at all the signatures and wondering how long it will take until the numbers start to go down. It’s not like he wants less and less students in his class every day. He very much admires the motivation the young people bring with them, and it is that motivation he needs in his lecture hall. This passion needs to be encouraged, their young minds needing to be filled with science and discipline.

Shaking his head one last time, he carefully put the sheet in his bag, turned of the light before leaving the room, locking it before his next lecture in three hours.

There had been no time for breakfast in the morning, Viktor barely didn’t have enough time to enjoy his cup of sweetmilk before Jayce rushed them both out of their house. The two of them sleeping in a bit later than planned and then spending way too much time to leave the bed and each other’s arms. But Jayce has always enough time to pack Viktor food, even if it meant not drinking his own coffee.

On the way to his office, Viktor fondly looked down at his wedding band, metallic and carved by Jayce himself. If Jayce can tolerate him every day for over 10 years now, then the students shouldn’t make such a fuss about seeing him twice a week for two hours.

Jayce
