Work Text:

The moon hung high in the sky, full and bright. Fireworks shot into the inky black surrounding it, music evaporating as it drifted into the sky. A familiar suited figure silhouetted the large moon, haunting the two men leaning onto the railing of the balcony. Chattering from behind them faded as they invested themselves in the cool midnight scents mingled with the sharp smell of a cigarette.

“...Is that our boss?” One man inquired, squinting at the floating figure in the sky.

The other glanced from the view to the navy-haired one, answering nonchalantly. “Yeahh… He likes to just spectate up there on New Years. You get used to it.”

The smaller man rested both of his elbows on the railing, staring down at the celebrating town below, sighing. They were out of that elevator, ever since then everything was normal. Was it a test? For what? It's a.. Well, pretty much a regular office job. Their boss was uncomfortably Normal, but… it's whatever.

“I'm just glad we're out of there.”

“D’aww… We? Didn't know you cared about me that much, newbie.”

“I'm not even new to the job anymore??”

The blonde one snickered, patting the other on the back. “You'll always be a newbie in my eyes.”

He sighed, knowing that arguing with this ball of egotistical beliefs was next to impossible. He didn't even know how he had gotten invited, he was far too annoying to be liked by whoever the host of this party was. Who was the host? Was it Angelica? No… The name began with an R, he was sure of that. Probably Rody, that made sense.

Another puff of smoke clogged his nostrils from his coworker smoking. The smell was bitter and disgusting, but it seemed to lull him into it further.

“..Can I-”

Before he'd even finished the question, the side of the cigarette was gently tapped against his outstretched hand. Hesitantly, he held it and took a puff. It was intoxicating despite it being so vile. He exhaled a musty grey cloud, being able to resist a spluttering cough.

“You don't have to ask, newbie.”

He mentioned, gently taking the paper back between two fingers and raising a brow momentarily. Typically, that voice was laced with self-importance or a passive aggressive remark, but now it was tinged with a bit of care… only a little.

He rested his head against the shoulder of the taller man, exhaling deeply. He hadn't had a good New Years in a while, let alone with someone. He felt a little jolt through the blonde's body as he leaned against him. It was justified, he must've been a little shocked to feel a random weight on his arm, but he hadn't moved away. He stared at him puzzled, but stayed mounted on the balcony.

“I’m so glad we're out of there..” He mumbled, gaze shifting to the silhouette on the moon. He couldn't get that day out of his head. It haunted him. He saw that face in his dreams, he relived the experience every time he closed his eyes, he heard every voice if it was too quiet.

“I do too… I do too.” The other responded. It was implied he was unaware of the events every encounter they shared until now, but it finally came to light that he probably just wanted to bury it down. Ignore it all.

A hesitant arm wrapped around his waist, pulling him closer. Eye contact wasn't shared, but a gentle embrace was. Warmth seeped through his body, battling the late night chill.

He released the smaller one from his hug, looking down at him, before muttering a few words. “Happy New Years, newbie. Glad you came.”

Even while he couldn't bring himself to listen to his voice right now; it didn't matter. A simple kiss was all it took for the blonde one to communicate his utter thankfulness for him being here.

Surprise coursed through him, sharper than the tang of the smoke on his lips. It only lasted mere fleeting moments, but it felt like eternity.

A deep chuckle sounded from the taller man as he broke the contact, amused at the shocked man beside him. His cockiness had returned, but it was most in-character for him. It felt weird when he wasn't talking about himself.

“Let's get back to the others now, eh? Don't want to leave them without me for too long, now.” He had extinguished the lit paper on the railing, flicking it over the edge, into the bustling street below.
