Work Text:

“Thank you, Manchester!” Mary screams into her microphone. “It was a blast performing for you guys. You’ve been an amazing crowd. Do you have the energy for one more song?”

The crowd erupts into loud cheers, which makes her grin the brightest smile. “Okay! Here is ‘Almost Love’!” The biggest hit from her career starts playing and Mary gives it her all.

Marlene watches the performance for the hundredth time and is still amazed by the way Mary performs the song as she was when she heard it for the very first time. It was written over a decade ago.

She still remembers the day as if it was yesterday. Mary was a new coming artist, she had a few hits but nothing mature. She always dreamt about being the biggest Pop Star on earth.

Since she knew Mary, Marlene supported her in everything. She was busy with her job, being a gym trainer was time-consuming, and with Mary’s tight schedule, it was hard to find a time when they both could meet up.

She missed Mary horribly. Being away from her longer than a few days felt like missing a limp. They were best friends, on drunken nights even more, but never really.

When she stepped into the studio, Mary was behind the big glass, recording some ideas she wrote into her notes app. As the lyrics came through to her, time and space just stopped.

Hearing Mary sing about loving and wanting more, needing more but it was always just Almost Love, was too much. Something just clicked and she knew they had to jump into the cold water and just risk everything.

Now standing beside the stage, watching her wife perform that song, made her proud of how far they’ve come. Mary is an award-winning artist, having hit album after hit album and Marlene had the opportunity to leave her job and open her own art gallery, which has been her dream since she was a child.

Mary leaves the stage, followed by loud screams and cheers. “You were amazing!” Marlene praises her as she pulls her into a long kiss. “I love you so much.”

Mary buries her face in the crock of her wife's neck and just breathes through. “It was a good show,” she agrees and looks up at Marlene. “But I’m glad it was the last night for two weeks.”

Marlene returns her grin, at the thought of their two-week vacation. “Mhm,” she hums, smirking, “All day laying on the beach with a cocktail in my hand and my perfect wife next to me. I think people would call that paradise.”
