Hurt (I Know You're Hurting But So Am I)

Chapter 30

Notes:

Here we are...the final chapter! This story has been such a labour of love. I loved writing it and, even more, I've loved hearing everyone's thoughts when reading it. It's the first time I've ever written angst and I thought I'd find it difficult, but I didn't! But it was always gonna end with fluffy fluff and here we are. So thank you all for reading. The response has been phenomenal. I hope you all enjoy the final chapter.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

LISA'S POV

The clock ticked. It was 1am. Lisa lay in bed, watching the rise and fall of her own chest, brunette hair spilled across her t shirt. Carla was asleep on her shoulder. Lisa was uncomfortable. She really needed to move. But she wouldn't. Not yet, anyway. Not while Carla was so peaceful.

It had been the perfect evening. Dinner had been fun, the 7 courses delighting all of her senses. And Carla had enjoyed it too, which was the most important thing.

Carla. Her girlfriend.

Coming back here, Lisa had felt a bit frustrated that her body didn't feel up to having sex. They were in the honeymoon stage of their relationship and they had an empty house. But the pain in her lower abdomen put her off, not to mention the fact she was bleeding heavily. But Carla didn't seem to mind.

"We've got the rest of our lives to have sex, Lisa."

The rest of our lives.

The idea rolled around in Lisa's head. How had they got here? One minute she was trying to squash down the feelings she'd developed for her friend and, the next, that same friend was telling her she was in love with her and wanted to spend the rest of her life with her. The sincerity in Carla's voice took her breathe away. It made her feel safe.

It made her feel guilty.

Watching Carla's hair, fanned out on her shoulder, Lisa couldn't help but think about the last brunette she'd shared a bed with. The woman she thought she'd always share a bed with. The woman she'd lost.

Becky.

What would she think of what Lisa was doing? A huge part of her felt like she was betraying her wife. But Becky was gone. She was gone and Lisa was tired of being lonely. Carla had laid her heart on the line for Lisa. She'd been brave when Lisa couldn't be. She'd helped Lisa see that she could be happy again.

Lisa was happy again.

Shifting herself slightly, she felt Carla stir.

"Shhh darling, it's ok. Go back to sleep."

Wrapping her arms around Carla, she felt the gentle pulse of her heart. She smelled the expensive shampoo she used. She looked at her face, relaxed and make-up free and so stunningly beautiful.

Carla loved her. She loved Carla.

It had been a struggle to say it. Not because she didn't think it. She'd been in love with Carla for months. But because she felt guilty. Guilty for loving someone that wasn't her wife. If she didn't say it out loud, maybe she could pretend...

No. She couldn't pretend. She wouldn't pretend.

This was it for her. Carla was her future.

The brunette stirred again, her hand slipping just under Lisa's t shirt and stroking her tummy absentmindedly. She'd spent half of the evening doing it when they'd first come to bed. It felt nice.

Kissing the top of her head, Lisa relaxed her head back onto the pillow. Listening to the ticking of the clock on the wall, she mulled over the events of the last few months.

She'd hurt Carla. She'd hurt her so much, pushed her away and spat out words she didn't mean. But she wouldn't hurt her again.

Smiling to herself, she closed her eyes, knowing she'd wake up to the woman she loved.

Notes:

For anyone interested, the title of this fic comes from the song Stand By You (Rachel Platten) which is a lovely song. Same singer as I'll Be Her which Lisa listened to after their spat in Freshcos. She has some great songs. I used her lyrics for another one of my fics (Hope You Always Know Your Worth, Though I Know That Life Can Hurt).

Next up...I've got a one shot written and almost ready to go. Then hopefully the third in the I Dare You To Love Me series, and I've just started writing another angsty one! So many ideas, so little time!

A huge thank you, once again, for your response to Hurt. I have honestly been completely blown away.
