Summary
The first time they met was when Matthew decided to fish in a slightly different spot. Gilbert had immediately hid behind a rock, wary. Matthew had heard enough stories to know how reasonable it was to be scared.
The second time they met was when Gilbert decided that it was safe to go out and talk to the birds. Obviously, his instincts needed sharpening because a human came rowing in. But instead of running away again, he watched, hoping curiosity wouldn't kill the cat this time.

Matthew intrigues Gilbert, the mythological beast, and chaos ensues because they don't speak the same language. Mentions of Canada's history and Inuit culture/mythology, because I'm a nerd who needs an excuse to research things. May not be super accurate though.
