My Moon, My Sun and All of the Stars.

Summary:

College roommates Maki and Yuta have always tiptoed around their feelings—close but unspoken, warm but uncertain. One evening, while Maki is out, Yuta transforms her room into a quiet galaxy: glow-in-the-dark stars on her ceiling, a moon lamp on her nightstand, a sun lamp on her desk, and a heartfelt note that says what he’s never quite been able to. When Maki returns home, the simple act of love gently cracks open the walls between them. As they curl into each other beneath their glowing sky, holding tight in the safety of shared silence, both realize they’ve found something even brighter than the stars—each other.

Work Text:

Maki had never really cared about decorating. Their apartment was minimal—mostly neutral walls and thrifted furniture, dotted here and there with functional objects like extra shelves, wall hooks, or the odd poster she forgot to take down after freshman year. She wasn’t one for aesthetics. She didn’t see the point. As long as her space was clean and quiet, it was enough.

But Yuta cared.

He never said it aloud, but it showed in the small things: the cozy throw blankets he kept neatly folded on the couch, the way he rearranged the bookshelf by color and genre every few months, the postcards pinned to the corkboard above his desk that came from places neither of them had visited yet.

Yuta cared about comfort. About warmth. About creating spaces that made people feel safe.

And lately, he’d been thinking about how he could give that to Maki too.

Because while she always acted like none of it mattered, he’d catch the way she lingered in the living room when he lit a soft lamp in the evening, or how she’d sit by the window when the sunlight filtered through the curtains just right. He noticed her quiet sighs when she returned from a long day, the tension in her shoulders, the tired weight behind her words. He saw the way she looked at his room—always softly lit, the corners glowing like a summer dusk—and then turned away like she didn’t deserve the same.

She did.

So when she told him she’d be out for the day—training with the college’s fencing team, followed by dinner with Nobara—he knew it was his chance.

And he had a plan.

──────────────────

It started with a package.

Well, two.

He’d ordered them weeks ago—one shaped like the moon, the other the sun. Soft, warm LED lamps with remote controls and adjustable light settings. They were beautiful, not too flashy, but full of the kind of quiet awe Yuta always felt when he thought of Maki. The moon lamp glowed pale and silvery, almost like real moonlight. The sun was golden and vibrant, like a held sunrise.

He unboxed them with care, setting them aside on her bed while he opened the second package: glow-in-the-dark stars in various sizes.

Lots of them.

The kind he’d had as a kid—plastic, sticky-backed, and perfect for ceilings.

He spent the next hour carefully climbing up a stepladder, mapping out constellations, recreating Orion and Cassiopeia, and sprinkling the rest randomly across her ceiling like a little galaxy. He adjusted and readjusted their placement, determined to make it not just cute, but beautiful.

When the stars were all up, he moved to the lamps. The moon went on her nightstand—an easy reach when she wanted peace. The sun lamp went on her desk, where she studied for hours, sometimes long into the night. He tested both, adjusting their glow until they matched what he’d imagined: warmth and calm, sun and moon, two halves of light.

Then, the note.

He kept it simple.

Just a small piece of paper, tucked neatly under the moon lamp, written in his familiar handwriting.

You are my moon, my sun, and all of the stars.

So I did this to make sure you always know.

He hesitated for a second before adding a tiny heart at the end.

Then, with his heart pounding and hands slightly shaky, he turned off the overhead light and stood back to take it in.

The ceiling twinkled softly.

The lamps glowed gently.

It was perfect.

Now all that was left was waiting.

──────────────────

Maki came home around 10PM.

She kicked off her shoes and dropped her bag in the hallway, stretching her arms over her head as she called out, “I’m home.”

Yuta, sitting on the couch with a book open in his lap, looked up with a smile. “Hey. How was dinner?”

“Loud,” she said, tossing her jacket onto the hook by the door. “But good. Nobara nearly started a fight with the waiter over the dessert menu.”

He chuckled. “Sounds like her.”

Maki yawned. “I’m exhausted. I’m gonna crash.”

Yuta’s heart fluttered. “Okay. Sleep well.”

She didn’t notice anything until she pushed open her bedroom door.

At first, she froze.

The lights were off, but her ceiling—her entire ceiling—glowed with hundreds of stars. Faint and soft, some clustered into shapes she recognized, others scattered like cosmic dust. Her room wasn’t dark anymore. It was alive. Dreamlike.

Her eyes dropped to the lamps—the moon resting quietly on her nightstand, the sun smiling softly on her desk.

And then she saw the note.

She picked it up with careful fingers, her breath catching in her throat.

❝You are my moon, my sun, and all of the stars.

So I did this to make sure you always know. ♥❞

Her heart squeezed.

She stood there in the middle of her glowing room, utterly speechless.

Then she turned and walked out, straight into the living room, where Yuta was pretending to read but clearly watching the hallway like his life depended on it.

“You did this?” she asked quietly.

Yuta nodded, closing the book.

She crossed the room and stood in front of him, holding the note.

His voice was soft. “I just thought… you deserve a little magic. And in case I never say it right, I wanted you to have this—so you’d always know how I see you.”

Maki stared at him.

Then she sat beside him on the couch and, without a word, leaned in and rested her head on his shoulder.

Yuta tensed for half a second—then relaxed.

She stayed there for a long time.

“I don’t do things like this,” she mumbled.

“I know.”

“I don’t really say what I’m feeling, either.”

“I know that too.”

She was quiet again, then: “But I’ve been feeling… a lot.”

Yuta turned his head, just slightly, cheek brushing against her hair. “Me too.”

“I keep waiting for it to go away,” she whispered. “But it never does.”

He smiled. “Good.”

She turned her head then, so her face was half-tilted up toward his.

“Yuta,” she said softly, voice low.

He met her gaze. “Yeah?”

Maki’s eyes didn’t leave his. “I think I love you.”

Yuta’s breath hitched. “I—Maki…”

She reached up and touched his cheek, fingers light, hesitant. “Is that okay?”

He leaned into her hand.

“It’s more than okay,” he whispered.

And then he kissed her.

It was soft—like the stars, like the lamps, like the quiet awe of being seen and loved exactly as you are. Her fingers curled into his shirt, and his hand rested on the side of her neck, grounding and gentle.

When they pulled apart, neither of them spoke. They didn’t need to.

Because now, even in the darkest hours, they had stars. They had sun. They had moon.

And they had each other.

──────────────────

They stayed curled up on the couch a while longer—Maki’s head on Yuta’s shoulder, his arm resting gently around her. The quiet buzz of the apartment at night was broken only by the hum of the refrigerator and the soft, syncopated beating of their hearts.

Eventually, Maki sat up slightly, eyes still drowsy.

“Yuta,” she murmured.

“Yeah?”

“…Will you sleep with me tonight?”

Yuta blinked. “You mean—?”

“I mean in my bed,” she cut in, cheeks tinted faintly pink. “Just… sleep. With me.”

He softened immediately. “Of course.”

She stood and reached out for his hand, leading him into her bedroom. The ceiling stars greeted them again with a quiet twinkle, glowing just as softly as before. The lamps cast a warm golden and silver hue on opposite sides of the room, melting into one another like the edge of day and night.

They both climbed into her bed without hesitation—Maki settling on the left, Yuta sliding in beside her. The mattress dipped slightly under their weight, and the comforter stretched over both of them like a shared sky.

For a moment, they just lay there, side by side, shoulders touching.

Then Maki turned onto her side and nuzzled closer, resting her head against Yuta’s chest.

His arms went around her instantly, one hand gently stroking her back, the other curled protectively around her waist. She let out a soft sigh and tucked her head under his chin, eyes fluttering closed as her fingers loosely gripped his shirt.

Above them, the stars glowed faintly, shimmering like distant fireflies caught mid-dance.

“I didn’t realize how nice this could be,” Maki mumbled.

“Sleeping together?” Yuta asked with a smile in his voice.

“No. This,” she said. “Feeling… safe. Close. Like I don’t have to keep pretending I don’t care.”

“You never have to pretend with me,” he whispered, pressing a featherlight kiss into her hair. “Not anymore.”

She shifted just enough to bury herself deeper into his chest, her legs tangling with his beneath the covers. Like she was anchoring herself to him. Like she’d always meant to be here.

“Yuta?”

“Hmm?”

“…Don’t let go.”

“Never.”

She hummed, the softest sound, and within minutes her breathing began to slow. Yuta held her close, his cheek resting atop her head, watching the stars fade ever so gently as his eyes grew heavy.

Outside, the world was still dark.

But in their little room, beneath a sky made of love and light, two hearts beat quietly as one—and sleep took them gently, wrapped in warmth, honesty, and the silent promise of always.
