Summary
(Rated Mature for the Catra POV Narration more than anything.)
Basically, Hordak is Galra, a former Imperial scientist, and Shadow Weaver is Altean, they were part of a joint mission to find new planets together right before the war broke out between their two peoples. Mara was on the mission and was also Altean, and She-Ra had always been before that.
When they got news of the war breaking out, the crew of the research mission took sides. Hordak got most of them under his banner in Scorpia's Kingdom/The Fright Zone, along with some of the native people there, as the first generation of the Horde.
Mara tried to stop him, but couldn't, so she moved Etheria into a pocket dimension that no communications could get in or out of, to protect the Heart of Etheria from falling into Zarkon's hands.
Shadow Weaver tried to scheme her way into ruling Mystacor, and joined Hordak when that failed.
Ten thousand years passed.
Now, Light Hope has just moved Etheria back through the portal at the end of Season 4.
Instead of Horde Prime coming to Etheria and capturing Catra, Glimmer and Hordak, it's Zarkon. Events follow from there. -
