Work Header

First Glance

Summary:

The Doctor glanced curiously around as he stepped from the TARDIS, Susan close behind… and promptly found his gaze met by that of a young girl, perhaps three or four years old. She was staring at them from across the street, apparently fascinated.

“Come on, Rose, sweetheart.” The child’s presumed mother, as blond as the daughter, evidently hadn’t noticed anything unusual.

Notes:

This was inspired by the ClassicRose prompt “First Meetings.”

Work Text:

The Doctor glanced curiously around as he stepped from the TARDIS, Susan close behind… and promptly found his gaze met by that of a young girl, perhaps three or four years old. She was staring at them from across the street, apparently fascinated. Or, well (as her stare shifted back to the TARDIS), fascinated by the box she must have just seen materialize out of nowhere.

Catching her eye again, the Doctor winked.

“Come on, Rose, sweetheart.” The child’s presumed mother, as blond as the daughter, evidently hadn’t noticed anything unusual. “We haven’t got time to look at police boxes right now. We’re already late. Oh, just come on…”

And she dragged the unwilling child off down the street, despite Rose’s vocal protestations.

Ah, children. The Doctor smiled at Susan, recalling her younger days.

“Come along, my dear. Let’s find out where we have landed.”

They ventured forth into what would turn out to be London, 1990 — the unremarkable encounter already slipping from his thoughts.

(Loitering at a nearby bus stop, Captain Jack Harkness took a harsh breath.

Rose and the Doctor, in the same place and time — and Jack couldn’t say anything without risking timeline interference. It wasn’t fair.)
