─── ⋆⋅ ☾⋅⋆ ───
“So dramatic,” Jimin sighs over the wilting lettuce that has collapsed in the Summer heat. He wipes the sweat from his brow as he gives them a bit of reprieve by showering them in ice cold water from the well. His can runs dry, so he makes his way to the other side of the greenhouse to refill it. He takes a scoop of water in his hand and pats it on the back of his neck, the rush of cold a welcome feeling in the muggy heat.
As he waits for the can to fill, he takes a moment to look out at the rows of tables covered in hundreds of happy, healthy plants. A sense of pride overwhelms him for a moment. A few years ago, none of this existed. He came to the Kim pack with nothing to offer except an encyclopedic knowledge of edible plants along with his desperate plea to be allowed to live here in peace.
He was given a chance, so he did what he could to contribute to the pack. Jimin set to work learning how to work with his hands, watching the woodworkers and trying the tools out for himself when they were free. It took him longer than expected, and it’s far from perfect, but he built this greenhouse with his own hands. He built the tables, too, and foraged all the seeds, cuttings, and tubers from neighboring areas and traders. He mixed the soils, dug the well, and nursed all of these plants to life. He now grows enough to feed the pack fresh fruits and vegetables year round, and he grows herbs for the healers and for seasonings.
He gets help now from a few wolves who love the plants, and he shares his knowledge with anyone who wanders in. Members of the Kim pack avoided him at first, and still do to a degree, wary of his strong pheromones and overwhelming presence, but he is used to that. And he would take wariness over the way his own pack had looked at him as a tool for war any day.
His watering can overflows while he’s distracted, and he curses softly as he shakes the water from his sandal. He brushes his dark hair back to get it out of his eyes and to let the sweat dry on his forehead. It’s backbreaking work, but it’s also serene and rewarding.
“Jimin,” Namjoon’s voice startles him as he knocks on the door, pushing it open with too much force. It clatters and falls slightly off its hinges, “Oh, oh no,” Namjoon tries to fix it, but Jimin watches it only become more askew.
He giggles, his eyes curving in amusement, “It’s ok. Just leave it,” he sets his can down and chuckles again.
Namjoon steps inside, blushing and looking back at the broken door. His casual hanbok is a bit untidy, his hair ruffled. He’s such an endearing head Alpha, and the main reason Jimin sought refuge here.
“Sorry about that. I can send Yoongi over to fix it if you want,” he bows.
Jimin waves him off, “No need. That door is always giving me trouble. I’m the one that built it poorly, after all,” he smiles. “Is there something you needed from me? I was just about to harvest those chilis Jin asked for.”
Namjoon reaches out to run his fingers along the leaves of one of Jimin’s flowers, “Oh, he’ll be excited about that, thank you. But no, that’s not the reason for my visit. I have some news.” He straightens out his hanbok and fans his face, “Wow, it’s hot in here.”
Jimin laughs, “The things we endure for our children.” He’s holding a pot of peppers like an infant, making Namjoon crack a grin. Jimin snips a handful of chilis off and wraps them in a cloth. “What news?”
“We have a visitor,” Namjoon steps closer, “A visitor who wishes to meet with you. I wanted to hear what you thought before I gave him an answer.”
Jimin sets down what he’s doing and gives Namjoon his full attention, “Oh?”
“He’s from the Jung pack, a few days travel to the East. He has come here specifically to meet you because you share something in common,” Namjoon places a comforting hand on Jimin’s shoulder. “This might be hard to believe, but he’s also an Enigma. I’ve never heard of two living so close they could actually meet. He said he travelled here because he wants to seek your advice.”
Jimin raises his eyebrows. He’s a little taken aback by the information. “An Enigma? Really? Are you sure?”
Namjoon squeezes his shoulder and chuckles, “Oh, yes, I’m sure. You’re kind of hard to miss,” he grins.
Jimin lowers his head sheepishly, “What kind of advice? I’m not sure I have any to give. I’m not like other Enigmas I’ve heard of.” Jimin grew up learning the history of his power-hungry and ruthless ancestors, a line bred specifically for the strategic possibility of producing Enigmas. The absolute dominance of other statuses was all that mattered to them, seeking to control other’s wills and bend them to their own. He doesn’t want to be a warrior or ruler of any kind. That is why Jimin ran and why he’s here, living as far away from his pack as possible.
“I think that’s precisely why he’s here,” Namjoon winks. “But of course, it’s up to you. If you don’t wish to speak with him, I can send him on his way.”
Jimin sweeps some dirt on the table into a little pile, “That’s interesting. Do you think it’s safe?” His stomach plummets slightly. He doesn’t want to bring trouble to the Kim pack. He is settled in peacefully now after a few years of building trust, and he doesn’t want it to fall away.
“I don’t think there’s anything to worry about,” Namjoon’s voice is soft but steady. “I met him just now. I think you’ll have much in common.” Jimin looks up to see Namjoon smiling softly. “If you feel anything is off, just let me know, and I will deal with it immediately.”
Jimin nods. He trusts Namjoon’s judgement. “Okay. When does he want to meet?”
“Are you free now?” Namjoon ponders, “I could send him in here. Or we could set up a more formal meeting for you at the community table later tonight.”
Jimin doesn’t like to wait for things. He gets antsy with anticipation, and it riles him up. But he’s also a bit nervous. He’s never met anyone like himself before. While it seems sudden, he’d rather get it over with. “You can send him in.”
Namjoon smiles, “Very well. Would you like me to stay with you?”
Jimin shakes his head, “I’ll be okay. I’m big and scary, after all. Formidable, even.” He hands Namjoon the wrapped peppers for his mate.
“Oh, yes, absolutely terrifying,” Namjoon tucks a stray daisy from the table behind Jimin’s ear. “An unhinged beast. I’m fleeing for my life right now,” he smirks as he makes his way to the door. “If you need anything, just call for me, friend.”
Jimin smiles, “I will. Thank you.”
He gets back to watering the floppy salad greens. Once he’s done, he grabs some tomato seedlings that have outgrown their trays to pot up into bigger containers. He wants some pack members to be able to grow them on their own porches and access them easily—a request from a busy mother and an elder. He sets them at the high table and gets to work, tucking their roots in tightly and pressing the new soil around them. The distraction helps him stay calm.
There’s a quiet knock at the door. The hair on the back of Jimin’s neck raises, his wolf on high alert, and an overwhelmingly strong scent overtakes all the sweet and herby smells of the greenhouse. It’s not unpleasant. It’s a misty scent, almost mossy, with a strong base of cedarwood. It’s like a forest on a wet summer morning, fog rolling over low hills. But it is powerful, and there’s an undertone of authority that makes his knees a little weak, snuffing out nearly everything else except Jimin’s own scent.
He takes a moment to steady himself. He sets his plants aside and brushes the dirt from his hands on his apron, clearing his throat. “Come in,” he calls.
The broken door jiggles, and then makes way for a man who barely fits through it. He’s objectively not that much larger than Jimin, definitely more broad, but his presence makes him appear massive. He’s dressed in a black casual hanbok, the arms rolled up exposing ornate tattoos on muscular limbs. His hair is longer and wavy, pulled up halfway, but his bangs hang down in his big, round eyes. Eyes that widen even more as they lock with Jimin’s, both of them freezing.
An energy pulses between them. Their scents mixing is a little suffocating. He feels his wolf raise its hackles, snarling in his chest. He wants to back up, but he can’t. The stranger does slightly, and he breaks eye contact, looking down at his own feet. Jimin is thankful for that.
“Woah, is this how it feels? I guess I get it now,” his voice is smooth and melodic. A bit cuter than he was anticipating, a playful lilt to it.
Jimin breathes. And then he’s laughing lightly, “We really do stink, huh?”
The stranger’s laugh is soft and sweet, a little tentative. His eyes crinkle at the corners in a kind way. His lips part into an easy smile, one that has Jimin doing a double take it’s so unexpectedly pretty.
“Big, stinky, and scary, I’ve been told. Thank you for meeting with me. I’m Jeon Jungkook,” he bows formally, then moves like he’s about to step forward, but he stops himself, “Is it ok if I shake your hand? I heard it’s something your pack does in greeting. I can stay over here if you prefer.”
Jimin observes him. His wolf probably would like him to stay over there, maybe even leave altogether, but he pushes that feeling down and extends his own hand, “I’m Jimin.”
“Jimin,” Jungkook repeats as he steps closer and wraps their hands together. They’re trembling. Jungkook is nervous. He bows into the handshake, a sweet and polite gesture. His hand is soft, and his long fingers envelope Jimin’s entire hand, which is still dirty and calloused from hard work.
“Ah, sorry about the dirt,” he blushes and pulls his hand back, wiping it again on his apron.
“Oh, I don’t mind,” Jungkook pauses and looks around at the plants, “This is incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it. Do you grow all these?”
Jimin nods, “I do, yes.”
“Wow,” Jungkook reaches out and touches a strawberry hanging from a woven planter above him, “I shouldn’t be allowed in here. I’m afraid I’d eat everything if left unsupervised.”
Jimin bites back a smile, “Snacks are a perk of the job,” he stretches out, plucks the strawberry, and hands it to Jungkook, “I have plenty planted outside as well. Please, help yourself.”
Jungkook looks down at his strawberry, letting it roll in his hand. Then he looks at Jimin, “Really?”
Jimin nods and watches as Jungkook puts the berry to his bowed lips. He closes his eyes and eats it in one bite, his brow furrowing as he chews. He looks a bit angry.
“Is it not good? I have a sweeter variety over here,” he moves to pick another, but Jungkook shakes his head.
“No,” he swallows, “No, it’s delicious. Sorry, I’ve heard that I look upset when I eat something I really like,” he laughs, covering his mouth with his wrist, “I haven’t had a strawberry in so long. Thank you,” he bows again. His lips are a bit more red from the juice.
Jimin is immediately plucking more berries and wrapping them up in a cloth, handing them to Jungkook, “Please, take some more with you then.”
Jungkook accepts the gift graciously, his scent turning sweeter, a floral undertone seeping in. Lilies, he’s pretty certain.
Jimin busies himself by resuming repotting the overgrown seedlings. He’s feeling nervous about continuing the conversation, and keeping his hands occupied helps. “Namjoon told me you wanted my advice about something. I’m not sure I can be much help, but I am intrigued meeting you. Have you met another wolf like us before?”
Jungkook shakes his head. He steps up to the table and watches Jimin’s movements. “I haven’t. I’m sorry to interrupt you like this. When I heard there was another Enigma so close, I set out here right away. Someone from your pack was visiting ours, and I overheard about you. I’m supposed to be negotiating with the Choi pack up North, but I took the chance to take a detour to see if I could speak with you.”
Jimin stills, “About?” He’s a bit unnerved someone was speaking about him, but he shakes it off.
Jungkook pauses and he sways, puffing out a cheek as he seems to look for the right words, “This pack is a lot different than my own, and Kim Namjoon is not anything like my head Alpha. I’m not sure if you’ll relate much to my situation, but I—“ he lowers his head, “I don’t know where else to turn.”
“Go on,” Jimin encourages.
“It feels awkward to just come out and say this. I know we don’t know each other, and I don’t want to burden you. I just came without thinking out of desperation, but since I’m here, I may as well just put it out there. Something is going on in my pack that doesn’t feel right. I think I’m being used. And I think it’s because I’m an Enigma.”
Jungkook looks lost. His hands grip the side of the wooden table, and tension starts rolling off of him.
Jimin gives him his full attention, “Used?”
Jungkook nods, “Before I presented, I wasn’t anything special. My father is a woodworker and my mother teaches pups. I only ever saw my head Alpha at ceremonies and festivals. But ever since I presented as an Enigma, he has taken me under his wing, moved me into his home away from my family, and he makes me sit in on all the strategy meetings. He assigns me to missions to negotiate with other packs, wants me to persuade them with my pheromones or something. I don’t—I really don’t like it.”
He takes a moment to sigh. Jimin’s fists start clenching, his face hardening.
“And now,” Jungkook hangs his head. His hair falls over his eyes, his voice quiet, “He wants me to mate his daughter. He said it’s because he wants me to be like his son. He wants me to be his second in command. To turn the offer down would be a great insult to him. His daughter—she’s nice, but I don’t—we don’t like each other that way. And I don’t know anything about being a leader or have much interest in it, if I’m being honest. It’s all so much,” he clicks his tongue and crosses his arms, “And I know the only reason is that I’m an Enigma. I have a feeling his motivations are not good. Like there’s a plan brewing I don’t know about. I don’t want any of this. And I don’t know what to do. I’m lost.”
Jimin senses Jungkook’s anxiety. His scent is everywhere. Jimin recognizes it. It’s similar to how he felt leaving his pack years ago. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, the unease in the room palpable. He never uses his pheromones around others as it tends to overwhelm them and make them uncomfortable. He goes so far as to mute his scent even though it’s difficult, and he takes herbal suppressants to tone down his pheromones. But Jungkook’s are just as strong as his, so for the first time in years, he focuses on sending out a wave of calming pheromones to help ease the troubled look in those big, doe eyes.
Jungkook responds almost immediately. His grip on the table loosens, and he hums out a soft little noise. He sees his nostrils flare and he leans in closer to Jimin.
“We have more in common than you might think,” Jimin admits. “I’m not originally from this pack. Namjoon took me in after I fled my own for similar reasons.” His body feels tight, his wolf unsettled.
“You fled?” Jungkook bites his lip. His gaze looks cloudy, blinking slow and breathing deep.
“I did. I’m not completely comfortable sharing the whole story, I’m sorry. However, I was meant to be the head of my pack at one point, and I didn’t like the direction the council was pushing me in. They also wanted me to persuade others, dominate them and bend them to my will. It was ridiculous. I didn’t have to flee. I could have forced them all to back down, made them all go along with how I wanted things to be. That’s what we’re supposed to do as Enigmas, right?” he shrugs.
Jungkook clenches his jaw.
Jimin offers him a soft smile, “I don’t like doing that, either. And it shouldn’t have to come to that, hm? I didn’t trust the people around me. I didn’t feel I could be myself without always having to assert dominance over everyone who was so hungry for war and power. It may have been for the best to stay to keep them in check, to change things, but I was deeply troubled and unhappy there. I could have tried to make it a better place. But I didn’t see a path to change the entire way of my ancestors, so I ran. I hoped removing myself would be enough to deter them. At least for now.”
It’s quiet for a moment.
“You don’t believe in that stuff either? My head Alpha is always saying my status is a gift, that it’s going to help our pack so much. Of course I want to help, but I don’t see how the things he wants me to do are helpful,” he grumbles.
“If you want my honest opinion, he shouldn’t be forcing you to do anything. It’s your life. It’s not fair of him to make those important decisions for you or make you do things you’re uncomfortable with. It’s selfish. And cruel,” Jimin grips too tightly and accidentally breaks the stem of the plant he’s holding. His heart pings with sadness. For Jungkook. For the plant. For himself. “I know it feels like you don’t have a choice. You do.”
Jungkook reaches over and braces the stem with him. Jimin swallows harshly.
“You think so? I’m so confused about it all,” Jungkook frowns.
Jimin meets his gaze. The world stands still for a moment as they stand close, their hands touching as they hold the broken tomato plant. Jungkook’s eyes look like they’re searching him, hoping to find the answers to all that is troubling him.
“I don’t think anyone should be forced to do anything they didn’t choose for themselves. You should be able to choose your mate and what you want to do with your life like anyone else. You don’t owe your life to your head Alpha just because of his position of power,” Jimin frowns. “He’s in the wrong here.”
Jungkook lowers his head for a moment, and when he looks back up, he looks relieved. “Thank you. I think I really needed to hear that. I don’t like forcing people to do things, and I shouldn’t be forced into things either,” he nods. His hands come together and cup Jimin’s closely around the broken stem, “I’m sorry about your plant.” His voice is low and almost inaudible.
Heat rushes to Jimin’s face. He clears his throat and shakes his head. He gingerly pulls his hands away and reaches for the clean scissors in his apron. He snips the stem just below a leaf node. “Sometimes we just have to get a clean break, and new roots will grow somewhere else. This little guy can still thrive with some time,” he takes the stem and places it in a small pot with fresh soil. “Here, water it and take it home with you. You’ll see. It will still bear fruit,” he smiles.
Jungkook looks surprised. He takes Jimin’s watering can and wets the soil, running his finger along the rim of the pot. “A clean break,” he mutters to himself, “That’s amazing. I didn’t know plants were so resilient.”
Jimin folds his arms over his chest, “They thrive best with care and attention, but they’re always trying to find a way to live even in the harshest conditions.”
Jungkook picks up the pot and looks at his new tomato plant with sparkling eyes, “I’ll take care of you, little guy. I promise,” he looks so sincere.
Something about that makes Jimin’s wolf relax. It curls up in his chest and settles.
“We’re pretty similar, hm?” Jimin leans against the table, “You’re not what I was expecting if I’m honest.”
Jungkook chuckles, “You’re not either. I’m so relieved. I was honestly expecting you to tell me to toughen up or something. Say I’m wasting a golden opportunity like everyone else.”
“You seem pretty tough already,” Jimin smirks as he eyes the broad muscles not very well hidden beneath his loose clothing, trying to lighten the mood.
Jungkook’s eyes widen. Jimin feels his gaze as it drags down his body. He feels vulnerable and catches himself hoping he isn’t too sweaty or covered in dirt. Both of their scents bloom a little deeper before they look away.
“Thank you for meeting me, Jimin. With just a few words, you’ve brought me so much clarity. Can I repay you somehow? You can put me to work,” he puffs his chest out subtly.
Jimin is endeared, “If you really want to, you can help me pot up the rest of these tomatoes.”
Jungkook sets his pot and strawberries aside safely before he stands eagerly across the table, rubbing his hands together, “Just tell me what to do.”
Jimin teaches him, and he’s a good listener, constantly looking to Jimin silently for his approval of what he’s doing, like he’s eager to impress. They work quietly and peacefully, moving at a steady pace. Jimin sneaks a glance over the table. Jungkook is sweating, beads of it forming on his broad neck and dripping down beneath his collar. The hair around his temple is wet with it.
“It’s hot in here, I know. If it’s too much, you can always step out. And make sure to hydrate,” he nods toward the well.
Jungkook takes the hint and gets a drink. Jimin watches his throat bob as he swallows.
“I’m sorry if this is rude,” Jungkook asks after getting back to work, “but what is your scent? I can’t quite place it.”
Jimin hums, “Sorry, is it too strong? I try my best to mute it around others. I’m usually alone in here.” He’s been told his scent is sensual, alluring and distracting—though he’s not really sure what that means. All he can tell is it makes most people squirm uncomfortably.
“No—I mean—It’s nice. I can tell it’s floral, a little sweet and musky, I just don’t have a name for it,” Jungkook speaks quietly. There’s a blush on his cheeks.
“Oh,” Jimin pots the final tomato, “It’s black orchid. A rare flower. I grow something similar. Would you like to see?”
“I would,” Jungkook makes a cute sound of approval as he finishes watering in his plants.
Jimin guides him to the back of the greenhouse. There are many flowers growing in the ground here in organized rows. The more delicate blooms are in containers on the shelves. His orchids are all lined up, carefully pruned and cared for.
“These are all wild orchids native to the woods where I’m from. I grew up closer to the sea,” he plucks a spent blossom from one, “I don’t have a black one, but I’ve smelled them once.”
Jungkook leans in and sniffs at the petals of a dark burgundy bloom. It makes Jimin flush for some reason. Maybe the heat is getting to him.
“They’re so beautiful,” he eyes Jimin’s flowers, “You grow the flowers for a hobby?”
“Mainly. We use the flowers in here for festivals and ceremonies, too. My garden at home is just for fun,” he admits. He goes to tuck his hair behind his ear and is confused when he feels something there. He pulls back with the daisy Namjoon had tucked in his hair earlier and laughs. It’s been there the whole time. He places it back behind his ear.
Jungkook looks soft when he meets his eyes, “Thank you for showing me. It’s kind of magical. We grow a few things at our pack, but nothing like this.”
Jimin’s smile is bright, full enough to make his eyes close. He doesn’t smile like this often.
“Oh,” Jungkook’s eyes widen, and he gasps as he bends down. Below the orchids, a row of lilies are blooming. Jungkook reaches out and cups a lancifolium, “A tiger lily,” his eyes sparkle as he looks up at Jimin, “This is my birth flower.”
“Lovely,” Jimin smiles, “It suits you. Your scent has a lily hint to it as well.”
Jungkook blinks owlishly, “It does?” his voice comes out in a pout, “No one’s ever said that before.” He looks back at the lily, tracing the dark spots on orange.
Jimin chuckles, “I think so, anyway.” He rubs at his neck self-consciously.
“That makes me happy,” Jungkook stands and bows politely, “While part of me wants to just live in this pretty place forever, I should probably stop pestering you. I feel like I’ve taken up so much of your time. I should also be on my way to make it to my stop by nightfall,” Jungkook sways as he talks, eyes trailing all over Jimin’s face.
Jimin nods in understanding, “Ok. I’m glad we met, Jungkook. I hope everything goes well for you.”
He smiles, “Thank you for everything. I feel more clear about what I want to do.”
“I didn’t really do anything,” Jimin chuckles, “But I’m glad to hear it.”
They walk back through the tables. Jungkook grabs his gifts before stepping back up to the door. He fidgets with it for a moment. With just one free hand, he adjusts the hinges and kicks in a board that had gotten out of square. He tugs it open and closed, and just like that, his door is fixed.
Jimin’s jaw drops.
Jungkook looks back at him and winks clumsily.
Jimin claps his hands and bounces in excitement, “I can’t believe you just did that!”
Jungkook tsks, “I was raised by a woodworker. I can’t just leave a door flopping around all sad like that.”
“You’re my hero,” Jimin beams, “That was amazing. I’ll tell all the doors around here about you. Many have fallen victim to our Alpha’s brute strength.”
Jungkook’s laugh is loud and contagious. As they step outside, Namjoon is walking up the path to them. He sees them laughing together, and his expression turns soft.
“Ah, it looks like you got that door sorted. Good.”
Jimin and Jungkook snicker again.
“Are you finished speaking? I can guide you back if you’d like, Jungkook,” Namjoon offers, “I assume it went well. I don’t see Jimin giggling like this often.”
Jimin meets Jungkook’s gaze and they’re both nodding.
“Good,” Namjoon puts a hand on each of their shoulders, “I’m glad you spoke. I had a feeling you’d get along. Jungkook, you’re welcome here any time. I mean that.”
“I appreciate that, head Alpha,” Jungkook bows.
“Oh, he hates when we call him that,” Jimin teases. Namjoon is blushing.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean any offense,” Jungkook looks worried.
Namjoon shoves Jimin lightly, “You’re scaring him,” he jokes, “It’s fine, Jungkook. No offense taken. We’re a bit unconventional around here, I guess, but I would argue more traditional in some ways. While technically I’m referred to as head alpha by some, and I lead most of the committee organizing, I don’t see myself that way. I’m just Namjoon.”
Jungkook looks stunned, “I’ve heard this pack was different, but I didn’t know to what degree.”
Namjoon hums, “We have our own ways. We like to think of ourselves more as a collective than anything.”
Jungkook looks around, eyeing the garden they’re in filled with Jimin’s plants that spill out into a park with carved benches by a river. Pups are playing in the water while their parents picnic on a woven blanket.
“It’s nice here,” Jungkook’s eyes are watery again. Jimin senses a sadness in his scent. “I’m glad I came. Thank you for having me with no notice and for not seeing me as a threat. I can’t tell you how refreshing that is.”
Namjoon takes Jungkook’s arm in his, “Let’s talk on our way out.” Jungkook looks surprised by the physical contact, eyes wide.
They turn to leave. Jungkook looks back at Jimin. He’s holding his tomato plant so carefully. “Thank you, Jimin. I hope to see you again someday.”
Jimin bows, “I would like that.”
─── ⋆⋅ ☾⋅⋆ ───
Over the next few weeks, Jimin’s mind often wanders to Jungkook. He hopes he was able to speak for himself and that his head Alpha relented and gave him back his agency. He does worry, though. His own experience didn’t go over well, and he hopes Jungkook isn’t suffering through that disappointment.
As he works in the greenhouse, Jungkook’s presence seems to linger. He eyes the other side of the potting table remembering how carefully those strong hands handled the fragile seedlings, popping them out with care and making perfect holes for the roots to sit in. The way he worked without complaint even though sweat beaded down his face. His throat.
Jimin pats his cheeks to scatter that train of thought. He grimaces when he realizes he just smudged dirt all over his face.
Namjoon stops by just as he’s rinsing his face with icy water, clearing his head and his pores.
“Jimin, do you have a moment?” the door is propped open and safe from any harm.
“Of course,” Jimin shakes his head and pats his cheeks dry with his wrists.
Namjoon places a jar on the table, “This is from Jin.”
Jimin snatches up the jar and hugs it tightly to his chest, “Hot honey?”
“Made with your chilis,” Namjoon nods, “Jin even collected the honey himself.”
“Ah, I thought I heard him screaming close by the other day,” Jimin chuckles at the memory of Jin sprinting by the greenhouse in a full beekeepers suit. Yoongi was close behind calling him a thief, even though he was laughing himself.
“He’s very resourceful,” Namjoon fights a smile. “I also wanted to check in with you. What did you think of Jungkook? We haven’t had an opportunity to speak about him since.”
Jimin tucks his wet hair behind his ears, pondering. “He reminds me of myself,” he admits, “He told me some troubling things about his pack leader.”
“Yes, he confided in me as well. I’m worried for him,” Namjoon frowns, “I hope he comes back for a visit. I’d like to know how he is.”
Jimin nods, “I’d like that, too.”
“Was it strange meeting another Enigma?” Namjoon rests his chin between his thumb and forefinger. He’s a naturally curious person, a philosopher.
Jimin mimics his pose so they both look like intellectuals, “Indeed.”
They both chuckle. Jimin puts his hands inside the pocket of his apron, “My wolf was on edge at first. It was uncomfortable in a way, kind of like it was too much. I could sense the authority and intensity of his wolf and it was like nothing I’ve ever felt—his scent and pheromones were powerful. We seem to affect each other the same way we affect others. His presence was…big.”
“He’s quite big,” Namjoon smirks, “That is interesting. You said your wolf was on edge at first, did it calm down at some point?”
Jimin agrees, “He’s very gentle despite it all. He has nice manners, and he looked at my tomatoes like he was going to protect them from the harshness of this world,” he laughs, “My wolf settled once I realized he wasn’t being threatening.”
“I also noticed his gentleness. He’s kind of cute, even. It’s intriguing that you’re both—I don’t know how to say this,” he pauses, “You have intense duality to you. You have large, domineering presences, oozing authority, yet you’re both gentle in nature, almost shy. I think it’s kind of beautiful. A soft strength,” he smiles.
“I’m not always kind,” Jimin’s smile is sad, “But I appreciate the life you’ve made possible for me here, and that I can choose to be kind more often.”
“You made your life here, Jimin, and we are so happy to have you. I’m so grateful you’re here,” Namjoon looks sincere.
“I’m your one voice of reason surrounded by chaos,” Jimin smirks.
Namjoon drops his head back with a sigh, “You have no idea,” he looks back with a smile, “You’re a great friend to me.”
“And you to me,” Jimin beams.
Namjoon leaves, and Jimin finishes sweeping up the greenhouse before heading back to his cottage. He lives a bit further in the woods than the rest of the pack. They were very wary of him when he first arrived, so he took up shelter in a small shack by the river that was used for storage back then. Namjoon objected and tried to speak for Jimin to be able to stay in the village, but the rest of the pack overruled him.
Jimin didn’t mind. He was just happy to have a place to rest his head and call his own, and he didn’t want to make anyone uneasy. Being close to the river was tranquil, and the woods here smelled sweet. After building the greenhouse, he got to work on a small cottage built from logs and stone close to the shack. As he got to know people better, some even helped him build it. It’s quaint and humble, but it’s home. His own home close to people he trusts.
He sets a kettle to boil over the wood burning stove and stretches his aching back. After washing the dirt from his face, hands and neck, he slips into an oversized tunic. The mug of herbal tea smells soothing as he settles in the ornate chair Yoongi carved for him. His fingers trace along the grooves of the small flowers etched into the wood with a soft smile, looking out the open window at the way the sunset sparkles on the ripples in the river.
Dried herbs and flowers hang in bunches from the ceiling of the small cottage, making it smell earthy and fresh. The stone fireplace takes up the majority of the space, a cozy pile of furs and plush pillows in front of it where he often sleeps— a stack of unread books borrowed from Namjoon next to it. There’s a desk in his actual bedroom where he keeps notes on his plants and makes schedules for seed starting and harvesting. His kitchen is filled with colorful jars of preserves and potted herbs. Pots, pans and an array of mugs hang from hooks on the wall. It’s cozy. Peaceful.
But as he snuffs out the candles and finds himself staring up at the ceiling in the black of night, he can’t help but feel a bit restless. His mind wanders to the tasks he needs to get done tomorrow, making lists in his head to drown out the silence until it’s loud enough to sleep.
─── ⋆⋅ ☾⋅⋆ ───
A few days later, there’s a commotion. Jimin is walking down the dirt path into the village in the morning, ready to start his work for the day. He waves at Yoongi, who is also stumbling out of his cabin, hair askew and a tired glare to go with his pout.
“Good morning, Sunshine,” Jimin teases. Yoongi’s hand raises to swat at him, and Jimin is quick to deposit the tangerine he brought for him there.
Yoongi pauses, observes the gift, and simply nods, “This is acceptable. I will overlook your offense of smiling and speaking before eight a.m.”
Jimin giggles.
“Giggling at this hour is diabolical,” Yoongi mutters. He’s already peeling the tangerine, popping a slice in his frowning mouth.
“I can’t believe I grow those just for you. That little tree was hard to get, you know. I traded my favorite bloom for it. You’re so ungrateful,” Jimin tsks, but he’s on the verge of laughing.
Yoongi just grins around the slice. They walk in comfortable silence.
He notices an unusual crowd gathered outside the community building. They’re murmuring, clustered together. Yoongi and Jimin shrug at each other, and they’re about to continue on their way, but Jimin stops in his tracks when he smells it.
Cedarwood and moss, a misty day in the woods. Intense enough to raise the hairs on his arms. A powerful presence under the scent. Enigma. Jungkook.
Yoongi is furrowing his brow, swallowing the last of his treat. “What’s going on?” he asks the closest person in the crowd.
A young Omega answers, “That big wolf is back. Oh,” she looks over at Jimin’s feet, seemingly unable to meet his eyes. She squirms. Jimin mutes his scent as best he can. “He was waiting at the gates this morning,” her voice is hurried, “Asked to see Namjoon. He was carrying bags and a tomato.”
“A tomato?” Yoongi frowns.
Jimin bows to her and pushes his way through the crowd. People part for him naturally until he steps through the door. He thanks them, and as he steps in the room, everyone looks over at him. A handful of committee members are all seated around the ornately carved oval table, often used for formal pack discussions and planning. Across from them, Jungkook has the tomato plant Jimin gifted him in his arms as he bounces his knee nervously. His scent is powerful and full of anxiety. Jimin bites back a whine just as Jungkook’s eyes shoot up to meet his.
“Is everything ok?” Jimin addresses the room, but his eyes are locked on one figure alone.
“Jimin,” Namjoon greets him. He’s standing beside Jungkook, his hand protectively on his shoulder. “I was just about to send for you. Come in.”
Jimin moves to, but he pauses at the intensity rolling off of Jungkook. He only gets just inside the doorway, gripping the back of a chair. He nods his head toward everyone. The committee members acknowledge him with subtle bows.
“Go on, Jungkook, tell them what you told me,” Namjoon’s voice is encouraging.
“I,” he looks up at Jimin, “I came here seeking refuge from my pack. I cannot meet an understanding with my pack Alpha, and I will not do the things he asks of me. He wants to use my status as an Enigma to wage war and claim other territories, among other things. It’s wrong. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I left my home, my family, everything I know to escape this, and I come asking if you will take me in. I have nowhere else to go, and I am frightened of living on my own.” He bows from the waist, cradling that tomato plant like it brings him comfort.
Jimin’s heart plummets and breaks for him as he closes his eyes. The worst has happened.
The committee shifts uncomfortably. They all look over at Jimin discreetly.
“I’m in favor of adopting Jungkook into the pack, and I will personally speak for his character,” Namjoon contributes, “Let’s discuss. Any concerns? Thoughts?”
Someone on the committee clears their throat, “Of course I feel for you. It’s no easy thing to pack up and flee your home. But I guess I’m concerned you coming here will put a target on ours.”
There’s a murmur of acknowledgment, and Jimin frowns.
“You must be of value to your pack Alpha. Will he come looking for you here? We must think of the danger that may put the people living here in,” another agrees.
“What if this is a ruse? His story is so similar to—What if he’s been sent to overtake the other enigma here?”
Jimin scowls. He knows the purpose of this meeting is to put all concerns on the table and work through them. He tries to keep his angry scent under control.
“And,” an alpha meets Jimin’s eyes, “If word gets out there are two Enigmas living in our pack, will that cause other’s to think we’re up to something?”
Jungkook’s eyes sparkle with what looks suspiciously like tears. He’s biting at his lip anxiously.
“These are valid concerns,” Namjoon nods. He’s about to go on to make a point, but there’s a scoff next to him. Jin stands. He’s wearing a robe and his hair is tied up into a little sprout on his head, cheeks puffy like he just rolled out of bed. He’s still unfairly handsome, big lips scowling and perfect brows pinched together.
He smacks his hand on Jungkook’s other shoulder, “Look at him. He’s a baby. A perfect little guy. Are you telling me you’re going to abandon a little pup that’s asking for our help? Shameful.” He grumbles.
Jungkook looks up at Jin in surprise, mouth parted. Jimin could almost laugh at the image of Jin and Namjoon standing with their hands on Jungkook’s shoulders like protective parents—a family portrait. The description of Jungkook as a pup is ludicrous, but it seems to make the rest of the committee able to meet Jungkook’s wide eyes.
“Thank you, Jin,” Namjoon clears his throat, “I would also like to point out that we can’t control what other packs think of us or what they do. We can only control what we do and what we stand for. And when someone comes and seeks our help, what is it you’d like to do? We can all hem and haw about the future, but what is your response to the present?” He raises an eyebrow. While he doesn’t like to think of himself as head Alpha, everyone heeds his words with respect and consideration.
The committee’s mood shifts and they’re all nodding.
“Where will he stay?” one member speaks up quietly.
Jimin remembers this question from the night he sat at this table asking for the same thing as Jungkook. He remembers the shame as they pointed out how uncomfortable he would make others in shared lodgings, and how they couldn’t guarantee it was safe for him to be around the pack, alphas and omegas alike. He wants to save Jungkook from that discussion.
“He can stay with me,” he grips the chair firmly. The room looks at him, including Jungkook. “While he settles, at least, and finds his place in the pack and decides what he’d like to do. I can understand what he’s going through to some degree.” He looks at his own hands while he speaks.
There’s a murmur of agreement.
“Jungkook, is that alright with you?” Namjoon asks him directly.
Jungkook is blinking quickly, like he’s batting away tears. He is glancing at Jimin again and nodding, “Yes,” his voice is hoarse.
“Good, then it’s settled,” Namjoon frowns, “I’m sorry, Jungkook, for what you’ve been through. I promise your status as an Enigma won’t be exploited here. We’ll have a welcome feast for you when you’re ready and introduce you to the pack. You’re welcome as long as you wish to stay, and free to leave if you need.”
Jungkook stands and bows to everyone repeatedly, “Thank you. I’m so grateful.”
“I’m sure you’re exhausted,” Jin coos. He rubs comfortingly on Jungkook’s arm.
He nods. Jimin takes in the slump of his shoulders, the wildness of his hair, the rumple of his hanbok. It looks like he ran here in the night. Poor thing.
“Jimin, are you free to help him get settled and rest?” Namjoon asks.
“I am,” Jimin agrees solemnly. “Will you have Hoseok or Tae water the greenhouse for me?” Hoseok is not a fan of the greenhouse, but Taehyung frequently comes in when he’s bored. Their fabric shop is just up the path from it, so they try to help each other out when they can.
Jimin steps outside and waits for Jungkook to follow. His heart is heavy, and the events of the day have a rush of painful memories floating back to the surface of his mind. He stays a few steps ahead, guiding and trying not to dwell too much on himself. He swallows it down and looks back to see Jungkook walking with his head down, his bags dangling heavily from his arms, the tomato plant held tightly.
“Can I carry something for you?” Jimin murmurs, “It’s a bit of a walk.”
Jungkook just shakes his head and adjusts his grip on it all, “I’m ok.” He sniffles.
Jimin falls into step beside him. He stays quiet, but now that they’re out of town, he hesitates for a moment before he lets a wave of calming pheromones permeate from him. Jungkook’s steps falter, but they carry on wordlessly. He can hear Jungkook sniffing, a soft hum of appreciation from his chest.
As they finally step onto the stone path and Jimin’s cottage comes into view, he starts to feel self-conscious. “It’s not much, and it’s going to be a tight fit. I’m sorry.”
Jungkook has stopped to take it in. The garden is in bloom at the moment, foxgloves and hollyhocks towering in the flowerbed making it all look a bit romantic. The sun is dappling through the trees on the straw thatched roof, the woven wicker rocking chair picturesque on the low porch.
He turns to Jimin, “I honestly don’t know how to thank you.”
Jimin shushes him and guides him inside.
Jungkook stalls in the doorframe. Jimin can see the goosebumps on his arms, and he blushes. “Sorry, my scent is probably too strong in here. Let me open the windows.”
He pushes open the window in the living room and kitchen, which are just steps apart. When he turns back, Jungkook still hasn’t come in, and he’s still holding tight to his belongings. His whole world packed up to fit in his arms.
“Here, let me,” Jimin steps up to take the potted plant, but Jungkook refuses to let go.
“Sorry,” he huffs, “It’s been a hard few days,” he lets go. It’s like a cork comes loose, and Jungkook’s posture slumps, the weariness showing on his face.
Jimin nods in understanding. He holds the plant up to inspect it. It’s perfectly healthy, a few blossoms and even a couple green tomatoes on the vine. He sets it on the windowsill, “This one looks even better than the ones in the greenhouse. You’re a natural gardener,” he smiles.
Jungkook’s frown fades, a look of surprise taking over his features, “Really? I did my best. I wasn’t sure how to take care of it.”
“It’s perfect. I’m so touched that you tended to it so diligently,” Jimin touches his own chest.
Jungkook bites his lip and his eyes grow wide and sparkly under the praise.
“Let me show you around,” Jimin clears his throat. It’s a short tour. “You’re of course welcome to any food in the kitchen. Fresh stuff and bread is in the baskets, and if you open up some preserves, just be sure to finish it within a day or two or it’ll spoil. Except for the jams—those keep well. Dried herbs are hanging up.”
Jungkook finally comes in, throat bobbing at the rows of colorful jars.
“You just have to work the pump here for water,” he shows him how to work the sink. “Stove is pretty self explanatory. I keep the wood over here, and you’re welcome to cook or eat here with me if you don’t want to go to the lodge. I tend to avoid it. Too crowded.”
Jungkook adjusts his bags, “That’s great. I, um, I love to cook.”
“You do?” Jimin tilts his head, “I like to grow food, but I’m still learning how to prepare it well,” he giggles.
Jungkook leans into the sound, “I don’t mind helping out. I’d prefer to eat here with you. I’ve never had access to so many ingredients at once.”
Jimin preens at that, “If there’s ever anything you want me to try to grow, I’ll see what I can do. There’s also more ingredients in the kitchens at the lodge. You’re welcome to take some back here.”
He leads Jungkook to the bathroom, showing him how to light the small stove for hot water.
“A hot bath indoors,” Jungkook makes an impressed face, “Only the wealthy in our pack have stuff like this.”
Jimin nods, “It was like that where I’m from, too. It’s different here—More like older times. We share everything, help each other, forage most of what we use, and any money is pooled together to provide for everyone when we trade. I built this home at no expense to myself, and they let me use their resources when they didn’t even know me.”
Jungkook’s brow furrows, “Sounds too good to be true.”
Jimin huffs out a short laugh, “I thought so, too. But it really is like that, and it’s a peaceful place to make a life. It’s not without its difficulties. I’ve been here a few years, and being an Enigma and an outsider will always be something you’re acutely aware of. But it seems you and I have little choice but to enjoy that fate no matter where we are.”
Jungkook hangs his head and shrugs, then he looks around, “You built this place?”
Jimin guides him into the living room. He grimaces slightly, “I did, and I know it’s not perfect. I’d never built anything before I came here, so I was more or less winging it. Yoongi, the pack woodworker, helped me a lot later on.”
Jungkook runs his hand along the solid wood mantle above the stone fireplace. There’s a series of running wolves carved into the side—Jimin’s first attempt at carving. “It’s amazing. I’m impressed.”
Jimin isn’t prepared for the rush of heat in his cheeks. He turns his head to hide it, but he knows the heady vanilla in his scent has come out, “In here is the bedroom. You’re welcome to it. I know it’s not much, but I’d like you to have some privacy and a space of your own.” He walks over and starts collecting his journals from the desk.
Jungkook doesn’t come in, “I can’t take your bed from you. I’m already intruding and asking for too much. I could roll out a bed somewhere—I saw a shack nearby I could even—“
Jimin shakes his head and interrupts, “I never sleep in here. I prefer curling up by the fireplace,” he nods toward the pile of furs on the ground. “Please know you’re more than welcome here. You’re not intruding, and please ask me for anything you need at all.” He finally coaxes one of those heavy bags off Jungkook’s shoulder. It thuds to the ground, followed by the other. “I’m so sorry this happened,” his voice is a whisper, “So, so sorry.”
Jungkook’s face crumples at the words. Jimin finally sees the sadness he’s smelled in his scent since he got here.
He rests a hand on Jungkook’s shoulder and releases another wave of calming pheromones, “Leaving my home was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. You’re so strong, so brave for doing so. I’m sorry it’s a choice you were forced to make, and that you’re suffering just because of someone else’s decisions. It’s not fair. And it’s not your fault,” Jimin speaks the mantra he’s repeated for himself hoping it will ease Jungkook’s pain.
Jungkook’s hand wraps around the wrist of the hand Jimin has on his shoulder. His fingers are soft and brush close to his scent gland. The touch causes an energy to surge between them, Jimin’s wolf perking up, alert. He thinks he’s going to push him away at first, but instead, Jungkook is pulling, and within a breath, he finds himself in an embrace. Jimin feels the other’s shoulders shake with quiet sobs, so he pulls him closer, cupping the back of Jungkook’s neck, tears welling in his own eyes. His shoulder is damp with tears.
Time stands still for a moment, and then Jungkook is speaking with an unsteady voice, “Thank you, Jimin. Thank you for everything,” he holds him tighter. Relief is palpable in the room along with the sadness, “I was about to have to do something awful, but you inspired me to just get out.”
Jimin is stunned. He hasn’t been hugged in ages—can’t even clearly recall the last time. He’s so used to being kept at arms distance that to suddenly be wrapped in someone has a lump forming in his throat, a tug pulling at his chest. “I’m here,” he murmurs, “if you need anything. Ok?”
Jungkook finally pulls back. His eyes are red and glossy, the expression heartbreaking. “Ok. I’m here for you, too.”
Jimin breaks at that. Tears spill down his cheeks and he sniffles, “Ok.”
He leaves Jungkook to unpack and decompress. As night falls, he prepares a simple meal, some fruity tea, and pours some water into a jug. He’s a little dizzy from the scent that lingers on his shirt after the hug, pulling it up to sniff at it absentmindedly. When dinner is finished, he knocks softly on the door. Jungkook calls him in.
“I made you dinner incase you’re hungry,” Jimin offers. He looks around. Jungkook’s clothes are folded neatly on the small dresser, organized into piles. A worn tool belt hangs over the back of the desk chair. There’s a drawing of a younger Jungkook, smiling with what looks like his parents, and a few items that appear sentimental splayed out on a shelf. There’s a plush fur doll shaped like a rabbit on the bed—it looks like something from childhood—and a lily scented candle flickers on the nightstand while Jungkook closes the journal in his hands.
“Oh, thank you,” he accepts the bowl of soup Jimin offers. Jimin sets the tea and water close by.
“Would you like some privacy?” he asks.
Jungkook shakes his head, “Can we eat together? I’m feeling a bit—“
“Of course,” Jimin breathes. He collects his own bowl and rejoins Jungkook. He sits on the armchair in the corner.
Jungkook sips at the tea and his eyebrows shoot up, a pleased hum that has no business being so cute fills the room, “That’s tasty. What is that?”
Jimin chuckles, “Strawberry tea. It’s made with steeped strawberry leaves and a little puree. You seemed to like the berries last time, so..”
Jungkook sips at it again, “I love it.” He picks at his meal slowly. He probably doesn’t have much of an appetite. Jimin went days without eating when he first arrived, so he wants to make sure Jungkook is looked after.
“Is it ok I’m burning a scented candle in here?” he looks worried.
“Of course. It smells nice,” Jimin assures.
Jungkook bites the side of his lip, “When we first met you said you smelled lily in my scent. That made me so happy because,” he pauses, “That’s my mom’s scent.”
Jimin takes a sip of tea, “It’s pretty.”
They eat quietly.
“Is there anything you need help with around here?” Jungkook asks.
Jimin shakes his head, “I know you probably feel a bit restless, but take your time settling. Rest, explore the area, don’t rush yourself into anything. I’m sure Namjoon will come to check up on you soon, and you can chat with him about what you’d like to do.”
Jungkook nods, “I mean you, specifically.” He clarifies, and Jimin pauses. “Is there anything I can do for you, Jimin?”
“Oh, um,” he swallows the last bite on his spoon.
“If anything breaks, I can fix it. If anything leaks, I can patch it. I’m—I can do that sort of stuff,” he offers.
Jimin considers that. “You cook, you’re polite, you’re tidy, and you’re a handyman? Did I just score the perfect roommate?” he grins. Jungkook huffs out a laugh, but Jimin continues, “You’re welcome to fix up anything you notice. And feel free to add anything to the space you like. Please consider this place yours as well while you’re here. I appreciate the offer.”
Jungkook squirms a little, “Ok. Just let me know if you need anything at all.”
“I will,” Jimin assures, “but you don’t owe me anything, ok? We’re friends.”
Jungkook looks up at Jimin with those wide eyes as he takes his empty bowl, pleased he ate.
“Get some rest if you can. I’ll be in the other room if you need me,” he steps through the door, “Goodnight, Jungkook.”
“Jimin,” his voice wavers, “Goodnight.”
─── ⋆⋅ ☾⋅⋆ ───
Jimin wakes to the smell and sounds of butter frying in a pan. He rolls on his back and stretches with a pleased groan, inhaling deeply. It’s been like this for the past two weeks. He wakes up with the sunrise to a delicious breakfast being plated for him, tea in his cup, a sweet wolf humming prettily in the kitchen, and he’s starting to feel absolutely spoiled.
He takes a moment to get up, stumbling to the table in his night shirt while rubbing his eye. “Morning,” he greets Jungkook, who’s scooping a heap of blackberry jam on top of a generous stack of pancakes. He tops it off with a mint leaf and deposits it on the table in front of Jimin.
“Perfect timing,” a crooked grin lights up his face while he pours two cups of tea. “Did you sleep ok?”
Jimin swings his feet happily from his chair, his stomach growling, “I should be asking you that.”
Jungkook lowers his eyes guiltily, “I haven’t slept yet. I’m going to try to lay down for a bit when you leave.” He plates himself some pancakes and sits across from Jimin, a comfortable routine they’ve settled into. He was tentative in the space at first, shy, but he seems to be opening up lately.
“Still adjusting?” Jimin asks with his mouth full, covering it with his hand. The taste is rich and buttery and spreads on his tongue. When he tilts his head, he feels some of his hair flop to the side, and Jungkook chuckles. It was probably standing up at a funny angle. He typically has outrageous bedhead.
Jungkook leans over and fixes it for him, his fingers running through Jimin’s hair gently. Jimin has to hold his breath, his heartbeat picking up at the proximity of Jungkook’s wolf. It’s hard to describe, like his aura is all encompassing and demands attention. It’s a strange juxtaposition to the sweet and doe eyed man across from him, but the palpable presence that simmers beneath him seems to get more intense each day, making Jimin short of breath and on edge often. It’s almost intoxicating.
“Mm,” Jungkook agrees, “I was on night watch before I came here, which is how I was able to slip away. I’m still trying to get back on a normal schedule, but my body just won’t sleep at night.”
“I could try making you a tonic,” Jimin offers, “Something to help you relax.”
Jungkook makes a face, “As long as it doesn’t taste bad.”
Jimin giggles around another bite, “Such a baby,” he kicks at Jungkook’s feet under the table.
Jungkook oversells it, groaning and gripping his leg like he’s gravely wounded.
“Just proving my point,” Jimin sips his tea to hide his laugh.
Jungkook sits up and glares, “Touché.”
They’re laughing when there’s a knock on the door. Jimin quirks an eyebrow up, but then he catches a whiff of Namjoon’s campfire scent through the window. Jungkook finishes off his breakfast while Jimin answers the door.
“Morning,” Jimin smiles. Namjoon spins around from looking out at Jimin’s garden.
“Good morning, both of you,” he acknowledges Jungkook behind him. “I’m glad you’re up. I was just coming to check in on you.”
Jimin steps aside and welcomes him in.
“How have you been, Jungkook? Settling in ok?” Namjoon stands in the kitchen, the space not big enough for him to sit.
“Mm, Jimin has been very kind to me,” Jungkook murmurs, “He’s been showing me around and telling me about the pack.”
“Good, I’m glad to hear Jiminie is being a good host,” Namjoon ruffles Jimin’s hair. Jimin pushes him away with a laugh, a little startled by the contact. Jungkook sits up straighter, his eyes honing in on the gesture.
Namjoon clears his throat, “I know we only spoke of this briefly, but typically when someone new joins the pack, we have a little celebration. A welcoming feast. It’s a chance for the pack to meet you and introduce themselves, and we make a big meal over the bonfire and play music under the moon.”
Jungkook raises his eyebrows, “Is there grilled meat involved?”
Namjoon chuckles, “Typically, yes. Does that interest you at all? The next full moon is in a week, so I thought it would be nice to prepare one for you. We don’t get new members often, and we like a reason to celebrate.”
Jungkook is nodding enthusiastically, and Jimin scoffs.
“Are you only in this for the pork belly?” he accuses.
Jungkook shrugs.
They both giggle.
“I would be honored for an opportunity to meet the pack—To introduce myself. If it’s not too much trouble, I think I’d really like that,” Jungkook admits. His ears are red, eyes sparkling, and he’s trying to hide a shy smile behind the sleeve of his shirt. Jimin’s wolf gets a bit restless at the sight, like it wants to tug that hand down for a better view.
“Good,” Namjoon sounds pleased, “In that case, Jimin, would you mind making some garlands to put up in the square? I’ll let the kitchens know that we’re on,” he’s rubbing his hands together like he’s also looking forward to meat.
“This is all a ruse to stuff yourself,” Jimin points an accusatory finger at him.
Namjoon laughs but he’s shaking his head, “No, no, seriously,” he composes himself, “I want to help set you up for a comfortable life here. You’ve been through so much. I hope you’ll come too, Jimin. I know you usually avoid crowds, but you’re more loved here than you know. We’ll all be happy to see you.”
Jimin’s eyes widen, then he’s forcing his lips that want to smile into a pout, “Hm?”
“You’re a beloved and valued member of our community. I hope you see that,” Namjoon presses.
Jimin turns to hide his flustered face, rubbing the back of his neck, “I’ll make the garlands.”
“Is there anything I can do?” Jungkook stands. He steps a bit between Jimin and Namjoon.
Jimin grabs his arm, “I need you,” he then glares at Namjoon, “I’m claiming him as my helper. No stealing.”
Jungkook is looking down at Jimin’s grip on him, amused, “Oh?” He quirks an eyebrow up at him.
Jimin cups his hand around his mouth and whispers, “I require your assistance. I may or may not be able to reach the poles we hang the flowers from by myself. This is sensitive information. Classified. Tell no one.”
Jungkook snorts but nods, acting like Namjoon didn’t hear any of that, “I’ll help Jimin with the garlands for no particular reason. Definitely no shortcomings on his part.”
Jimin pats his arm with extra force, “Oh, that’s nice. Thank you.”
“No problem,” Jungkook smirks.
Jimin pinches him, and Jungkook cries out, trying to tickle him in retaliation. They squabble for a bit before they settle.
They both turn to Namjoon, who is looking at them with an endeared expression, hiding a smile behind his fist. “I’m glad that’s settled,” there’s a laugh behind his voice, “I’ll leave you to it. I’m here if you need anything. And I’ll tell the kitchens to prepare plenty of pork belly,” he winks at Jungkook while heading to the door.
“Wait,” Jungkook stops him. He wavers nervously for a moment, “If the kitchens need any help, I’d like to offer a hand there, too. I’m—I like to cook.”
Jimin smiles softly and pats Jungkook on the back, “He’s an amazing cook, I can vouch for that.”
Namjoon nods, “That’s wonderful. I’ll have Jin come meet with you about it. He’s head of the kitchens.” He pauses before he steps out the door, “I’m happy you two are getting along. It’s good to see you so…peppy, Jimin.”
“Peppy?” Jimin’s jaw drops, “Peppy?! Please leave my home. I’m very busy, you know. Scram,” he shoos Namjoon out and closes the door behind him.
Jungkook is looking at him with raised eyebrows, “What’s got you acting all peppy, Jimin?”
Jimin charges, shoving at Jungkook with a playful growl. He beats his fists lightly against the other’s chest before Jungkook grabs him and holds him by his wrists.
“I’m not peppy,” Jimin pouts, “I’m very mysterious and brooding. I never have any fun.”
Jungkook giggles, “If you say so.”
They both smile as Jimin steps back. He rubs at his own chest, “Wow, I can’t remember the last time I growled like that. Guess you bring out the pup in me.”
“Ah, so it’s me?” Jungkook wiggles his eyebrows. “I’m the one that makes you pep—“
Jimin throws his slipper at him, “Peppy is banned. We’re not using that as a descriptor for me, a very cool guy, ok?”
Jungkook tries to dodge, but laughs as the slipper hits him and lands to the floor with a flop. They both lunge for it. Jungkook beats him, throwing it across the room.
“I have another,” Jimin pulls off his other slipper and chases Jungkook around. He’s pretty sure Namjoon will be able to hear their giggles all the way down the path.
Jimin lets Jungkook nap while he tends to the plants in the greenhouse. His mind is on Jungkook while he waters and deadheads, simple tasks that lead him to daydream. His mood really has shifted in a short amount of time. He laughs so much in Jungkook’s company, his wolf always wanting to tease and bicker with him. It’s like they’re on the same wavelength, an ease to their connection. There’s a giddiness in his chest, a lightness he’s never felt before.
When he gets home, he finds Jungkook sitting by the river. He doesn’t typically venture far from the cabin without Jimin. He looks contemplative sitting on a rock, gaze spaced out while watching the current. Jimin quietly joins him, saying nothing as he sits close and rests his hand comfortingly on Jungkook’s back.
He understands. Life is heavy. Complicated. There’s probably a lot processing in his mind right now, but Jimin wants him to know he’s not alone. After a while, Jungkook tentatively leans over. His head rests gently on Jimin’s shoulder. He holds his breath for a moment, an unexpected swarm of butterflies in his chest.
They stay like that. Silent and watching the reflections of trees and clouds in the glassy river surface. It’s peaceful, and Jungkook’s scent mellows. Their hands are almost touching. Jungkook’s hair softly tickles Jimin’s neck.
The peace is broken after a while when a familiar voice shouts in the distance. Jungkook’s head shoots up, and they both look around, confused.
“Yah, over here, dummies,” there’s a motion up river. Jimin snorts when he sees it. There’s a small boat floating towards them, and Jin is perched leisurely inside. He’s wearing an oversized straw hat and a uniquely patterned hanbok, and there’s a fishing rod propped in his hands.
As he gets closer, he starts yelling, “Grab me! I don’t have oars! I came here to see you but I can’t stop!”
“What do you mean grab you? You’re in the river,” Jimin laughs, “You’re on your own.”
Jungkook stands and runs over to where the river narrows. “Um, hold out your pole. I’ll pull you over here.”
“Hey, this kid’s not bad,” Jin aims his rod to line up with Jungkook’s waiting grasp, “See Jimin? This is how you treat your elders. You could learn a thing or two from this guy.”
Jungkook lets out a sound of surprise, holding onto a branch to lean over the river further. It looks precarious. Jimin gets up and joins him, holding his waist to keep him from slipping in as he gets ahold of Jin’s fishing pole and tugs.
“Look at that,” Jin looks pleased, “I love it when a plan comes together.” He’s pulled in close enough that the bottom of his boat drags and stops, but it spins backward. The only thing keeping him from being swept back off is their hold on the fishing rod.
“What plan?” Jimin giggles, “You clearly didn’t have one.”
“I did,” Jin gets defensive, “I came here to get Jungkookie. Namjoon said he’s interested in helping in the kitchens.”
“And you’re in a boat because…?”Jimin prompts.
"I’m fishing. I can do more than one thing at a time, Jimin. I’m efficient,” he rolls his eyes.
“Of course,” Jimin presses his lips together to suppress his smile, “Makes perfect sense.”
“Ok, hop in,” Jin beckons to Jungkook.
“What?” Jungkook laughs, “Right now?”
“Let’s go,” he motions again.
Jimin shakes his head, “Is this a kidnapping?”
“Im not a kid,” Jungkook grumbles childishly.
“Jimin, let go of my new apprentice so I can abduct him properly,” Jin starts waving the rod, almost making Jungkook lose his balance. He didn’t realize he was still holding his waist. He lets go, and Jungkook stumbles.
Jimin is quick. He reaches out and grabs the pole while also tugging Jungkook back onto the rock by his shirt.
“Where are you taking him?” Jimin grunts with effort to stay standing himself.
“The river winds back right behind the lodge. It’s very convenient. I’m going to give him a tour of the kitchens. And I’m going to catch some fish so we can prepare them together. It’s a very good plan,” Jin explains.
“Are you ok going with this weirdo?” Jimin mumbles to Jungkook.
He just laughs and nods, “Sounds fun.”
Jimin holds them steady as Jungkook leaps into the small boat. It rocks so fiercely it nearly tips, but it rights itself eventually. Jimin waves, “See you later, then. Good luck!”
Jungkook smiles. He looks adorable, nose scrunched happily. He leans over the edge of the boat and points excitedly, “There’s really fish in here,” his eyes are wide. Jimin watches as Jungkook proceeds to talk to the fish, calling them cute as he floats downstream around a bend.
He hears Jin yelling something and Jungkook’s laughter in the distance. He chuckles as he goes back home. It’s the first time in weeks he’s been here alone, and the silence is a bit jarring. He feels almost lost, his comfortable routine with Jungkook disturbed. It’s strange how just a few weeks with him has become his new normal, displacing his years long patterns. He makes himself a simple meal and settles in with his journals, planning out the summer harvest schedule. After a few hours, he finds himself alerting to every little noise, looking over to the door.
It’s past sunset when Jungkook finally comes back. He looks happy and his cheeks are flushed prettily. He’s carrying a small basket, which he sets on the table.
“I brought you some fish. Are you hungry?” he looks over at Jimin while pulling the cloth on the basket back. There’s a plated dish inside.
“You actually caught something?” Jimin closes his books and makes his way to the kitchen.
Jungkook chuckles, “It took a while, but yes. We each caught one. The kitchens had a whole supply of fish, but Jin was pretty set on catching one for himself.”
Jimin tips his head back with a laugh, “That sounds like him. He’s an avid fisherman, after all. Yoongi is his usual boat abduction victim.”
Jungkook snorts, “It was fun.”
“Yeah?” Jimin steps closer, “What did you make?”
Jungkook pulls out the plate. “They made maeuntang for the pack, but I made this for you. This is the one I caught.”
“Is that catfish?” Jimin smiles, “You caught a catfish?”
Jungkook nods, “A small one. Grilled catfish in spicy sauce with bok choy and rice.”
“He says casually,” Jimin shakes his head, “You didn’t have to bring me any. This is your catch!”
“I want you to have it,” Jungkook murmurs, “I already had some maeuntang.”
“You haven’t even tried this?” Jimin points at the plate.
“It was a small one. I wanted to make sure you had enough. I had Jin try some. He seemed to like it,” there’s a proud puff to Jungkook’s chest and a sparkle in his eyes.
Jimin grabs a spoon and takes a bite. He hums. Of course it’s delicious. He holds some up for Jungkook, “It’s so good. You have to have some,” he talks with his mouth full.
Jungkook takes the spoon and has a small bite. He works it slowly in his mouth, a furrow to his brow like he’s analyzing it, critiquing it. “It’s not as crispy as I hoped.”
Jimin smacks him on the chest, “You carried it here all the way from town. It’s still super crispy considering. You’re too hard on yourself. It’s amazing.”
“You’re too soft on me,” Jungkook teases. He bites the inside of his cheek to stop a smile, “I’m glad you like it.”
Jimin still insists on sharing despite Jungkook’s objections, and they end up finishing it together. They talk about Jungkook’s day. He seems to have enjoyed it, giggling about Jin’s antics. He mostly helped with food prepping, and he mentioned getting secret snacks from a few of the older women.
“Do you think you’ll want to work in the kitchens full time?” Jimin wonders, “Is that something you’re considering?”
Jungkook brushes his bangs out of his eyes, “I wouldn’t be against it. I liked working with them, and I appreciate what they do. I guess I’ve just always thought of cooking as more of a creative outlet in a way, and this was all very methodical. But yeah, I’d consider it.”
“Is there anything else you enjoy doing? You don’t have to just do one thing. You could also bounce around and help out on different projects when needed,” Jimin’s voice comes out gentle, thoughtful. “I’m sure there’s a lot of things you’re great at.”
“Really?” Jungkook looks surprised, “That would actually suit me quite well,” he laughs, “Cooking and woodworking are things I know I enjoy, and I like to help with physical projects. I—would you need help? I want to learn more about gardening, too.”
“Oh?” Jimin raises his eyebrows, “I won’t say no to that. There’s always something to do this time of year. It calms down in the winter. I go bored out of my mind holed up in here.”
Jungkook smirks, “I’ll keep you company.”
Jimin stills.
Jungkook seems to pick up on his pause and clears his throat, “I mean, if that’s ok. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to build something before then. Or find somewhere else.” He’s panicking.
Jimin reaches out and puts a hand over his, “Let’s not worry about that. Of course you can stay here.”
They talk into the night. Before bed, Jimin steps out into the living room after washing up. Jungkook is in the kitchen, pruning the yellow leaves from his tomato plant carefully. He waters it, inspects it, an unmistakably excited smile on his lips as he observes the dozens of green tomatoes cascading down the vine. It’s healthy and robust, well taken care of. Jungkook murmurs something to it that sounds like “you’re working hard.” He takes a leaf in hand and gives it a handshake.
Jimin’s heart melts. It’s too cute. He can’t keep the goofy grin off his face while trying to fall asleep.
As the days pass, the welcoming feast draws closer. Jungkook makes them breakfast each morning and they walk into the village together. Jimin goes to the greenhouse, and Jungkook helps prepare in the kitchens for a few hours.
Two days before the celebration, Jungkook meets him at the greenhouse after, and they start harvesting flowers and greenery for the garlands.
“Want to string them together in the park? We can sit by the river,” Jimin suggests, “It’s too hot in here.” He fans at the sweat on his forehead.
“That sounds nice,” Jungkook nods, “I packed us some bread and cheese for lunch. Maybe we can take some berries.”
Jimin collects some, a soft smile curled into the corner of his lips all afternoon.
They find a shady spot under a tree, their basket of flowers between them. They eat first, toes dipped in the cool water on a hot day. As they finish, Jimin splashes Jungkook’s leg playfully, and the other dips his hand in the river, squeezing it in a skillful way so that a stream of water squirts Jimin right in the face.
He gasps, brushing the wet hair out of his eyes. Jungkook squirts him again, then again, laughing as Jimin squeals, trying desperately to escape the assault.
“Is this how you treat your elders?” he wails.
“Mmhm,” Jungkook nods, continuing his attack.
“You’re gonna get the flowers wet!” Jimin complains. Jungkook stops and looks nervously over at the basket. While he’s distracted, Jimin seeks his revenge, shoving him until he falls fully into the river. It’s harder than he thought, his hands pound against hard muscle, his body sturdy and unmoving, but it gives since he’s unbalanced and reaching over the edge. Jungkook yelps, soaked up to his chest from falling forward.
Jimin immediately stills when Jungkook turns around. He’s wearing a white tunic today. The water makes it nearly see-through, the dark ink of his tattoos bleeding through. It clings to the planes and valleys of his chest, so much more defined than Jimin even imagined. Not that he was imagining—His cheeks feel hot. His scent deepens.
Jungkook glares up at him from the water’s edge, then grabs Jimin’s ankle, pulling him forward. He squeaks, gripping the grass and trying to escape, kicking his leg. A devilish smirk takes over Jungkook’s lips, and his eyes flash with something predatory. It has Jimin’s heart pounding. His wolf snarls and raises its hackles, but it’s thrilling. Like it’s excited. Playful. He’s never felt that before. Jungkook huffs, pulls him roughly, then grabs Jimin’s hips and tosses him over his shoulder.
Jimin yelps, kicking and squirming as Jungkook walks them out to deeper water.
“Put me down,” he laughs, beating his fists on Jungkook’s back.
“As you wish,” Jungkook pulls him into a bridal position, smirking. Water drips down his neck from the wet ends of his hair. He smells—so good. Jimin’s nostrils flare, eyes raking in every detail of him up close. The mole under his lip. The small scar on his cheek. The pleasant curve of his cupid’s bow. Jungkook pauses, too. Jimin can feel his rapid heartbeat, see the way his gaze keeps flicking from his eyes to his lips, feel the way he’s holding him closer and closer.
“Jimin?” a voice from the edge of the river carries, sounding concerned.
They both startle, Jimin flails and Jungkook looses his grip, and he falls completely into the river, head submerged. He pops up quickly, gasping for air and flipping his wet hair back.
Jungkook is backing away, hands up, “That was an accident,” he laughs, “Oh my goddess. I didn’t mean to!”
Jimin ignores him, getting up and charging. He lunges onto Jungkook’s back with a squawk, wrapping his arms around his throat. The struggle is exciting, a moment of showing off how strong each of them is while they push and pull against each other. He twists his weight, tugs and then forces Jungkook off balance until they both fall under the water.
When he comes up this time, Jungkook is laughing, bright and loud. The sound is contagious, making him join in. They splash each other a little more. Jungkook looks beautiful and smells crisp, happy. Their eyes meet as they grab each other’s hands to stop the splashing, lips and noses submerged under the water but doing little to hide their smiles.
“Jimin? Are you ok?” Jimin looks up to see Hoseok and Taehyung both ankle deep in the river. They’re rolling their pants up, faces concerned.
Jimin waves at them, “I’m ok. Only my pride has been hurt, that’s all,” he pouts. Jungkook splashes him again as he’s distracted, and Jimin laughs before he dives at his shoulders, shoving him under with force and a grunt before swimming to shore.
Jungkook is close behind. He feels chased, his body pumping with adrenaline, squealing. He feels heavy as he finally climbs out of the water, his clothes dripping and sagging against him. He wrings out the edge of his tunic and shakes the water from his hair.
“Who is that? Is he trying to kill you?” Taehyung looks terrified, “We heard you screaming.”
Jimin snorts, “No, no, this is Jungkook,” he introduces as Jungkook climbs out of the water sheepishly, “He’s our new pack member.”
Hoseok and Taehyung both back up almost imperceptibly. Jungkook bows to them, apologizing, “It’s nice to meet you. Sorry to worry you.”
“He’s staying with me,” Jimin explains, “Thank you for watching the greenhouse the day I was helping him settle.”
“Nice to meet you, Jungkook,” Hoseok bows. He sounds a little nervous.
“This is Hoseok and Taehyung,” Jimin tries not to let his eyes travel lower than Jungkook’s face, but he does take a peek. His clothes cling to him, abs and pecs completely visible. His black trousers accentuate the thickness of his thighs and rivets of muscle even there. “They weave fabric and sew a lot of the clothes you see in the village. They made this,” Jimin points at his wet shirt.
“Ah,” Jungkook bows again, his long hair dripping, “Sorry I got it wet. Jimin started it.” He points childishly.
Taehyung and Hoseok relax a little. “I really thought you were drowning,” Taehyung shoves his shoulder lightly, “I’ve never seen you in the river.”
“It was war,” Jimin smirks, “pretty sure I won.”
Jungkook scoffs.
Hoseok and Taehyung share a look.
“What’s all this?” Hoseok sits next to the flower basket.
“We’re making garlands for Jungkook’s welcome feast. Has Namjoon said anything yet? We’re having one in two moons,” he explains, “Want to help?”
Taehyung sits and is already excitedly grabbing at the thread, “Mine’s going to be the prettiest.”
Hoseok laughs, “It will be the most unique, that’s for sure.”
“You’re just jealous because I’m gifted and talented,” Taehyung gathers a handful of ferns and starts wrapping them around the roses. Hoseok raises his eyebrows.
Jimin threads a needle and hands it to Jungkook. “You just grab whatever flowers you like, pop the needle through, then tie a knot to hold it in place,” he explains softly, demonstrating with his own string.
“Like this?” Jungkook does it perfectly after just two tries.
“Perfect. Is there anything you’re not good at?” Jimin praises.
Jungkook’s big eyes widen. He bites at his lip and brushes his wet hair off his forehead. It’s lethal. Too attractive even for Jimin to be able to deny. Jimin drops his thread and has to pull his gaze away to search for it. Jungkook leans over and finds the needle for him, placing it gently in his palm, “There you go,” his voice is soft and by his ear.
“Thanks,” Jimin tries his best to calm himself. His fingers tremble as he grabs a sunflower.
Hoseok clears his throat, “You’re like Jimin, aren’t you? You guys smell the same.”
Jungkook blushes and sits back in his own space. He busies himself gathering a pretty ombré of pink to purple flowers, “I am. We’re both Enigmas, I mean.”
“Ooooooh,” Taehyung exclaims, “makes sense now.”
“What?” Jimin chuckles.
“Why he was able to throw you around like a rag doll,” he states matter of factly.
Jimin throws a handful of petals at him, “That didn’t happen.”
Jungkook chuckles and Jimin glares at him, “You stay out of this.”
“I didn’t say a word,” Jungkook defends himself.
“Your chuckles and your smug little grin says it all,” Jimin grumbles, “And you,” Jimin points at Taehyung, “You’re always first to know of any gossip going around. You’re lying about not knowing who Jungkook is.”
Taehyung tries to play innocent, but the boxy grin that melts across his face reeks of guilt, “It’s true. I heard so much about how handsome he is from the kitchen staff I wanted to come meet him for myself.”
The group erupts in giggles. They chat as they work, Jungkook eventually telling them his story of why he’s here.
“I’m sorry,” Taehyung puts a yellow flower in front of Jungkook, the next color in his pretty rainbow garland.
Jungkook hums thoughtfully, “I’ve had a hard time the past few years. I’m so grateful I met Jimin and Namjoon, who helped me realize I could get out. I’m excited to finally officially meet the pack.”
“What about your family?” Hoseok wonders.
Jungkook presses his lips together, his scent unmistakably sad, “I wasn’t really allowed to see them much after I presented. I don’t think the head alpha wanted them to be able to influence me. He always said they didn’t raise me right, that I shouldn’t be so soft. I left them a letter to tell them why I fled. I think they’d be happy for me. Proud of me. I hope I get to see them again one day,” he admits with a sniff. His voice gets quieter as he speaks and he never stops stringing his garland.
Jimin gets emotional, choking back tears.
No one mentions it.
“I’m glad you’re here,” Jimin admits.
“Me too,” Jungkook meets his eyes. They share a quiet moment as the breeze picks up, the sun turning a deeper yellow as it gets lower in the sky.
“It’s nice to see this side of you,” Hoseok says as they finish up. Jungkook is helping Taehyung hold his garland while he puts the finishing touches on it. The ferns protrude out like tentacles, the roses rolled into it like little suckers. It’s more of a sculpture than a garland.
“Like what?” Jimin is resting back on his forearms, his clothes finally almost dry. He’s watching the other two fondly.
“Like you’re opening up. Maybe dropping a wall or two,” Hoseok smirks, “It seems like someone big and strong might be tearing them down.”
“Walls?” Jimin tilts his head. Maybe he’s right. After leaving his pack and everything he knew behind, including his loved ones, he subconsciously kept everyone at arms length in fear of having to leave them again. He gets a little nervous thinking about letting anyone in, getting close and being vulnerable to that pain. His instinct has him sitting up, touching his chest.
Jungkook looks up, like he senses Jimin’s mood shift. He searches his face, hands Taehyung back his finished garland, and comes up to his side.
“You ok?” he’s searching for any kind of threat.
“I’m ok,” Jimin smiles softly, “Are you all done? Let me see.”
Jungkook holds up his garland the best he can. It’s over ten feet long and absolutely stunning.
“It’s beautiful. That one’s going on the entrance,” he claps, “The place of honor.”
“What about mine?” Taehyung twirls with his.
“Yours is…unique. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Hoseok chuckles.
Taehyung pouts.
They all chime in how beautiful it is until he’s preening.
They say goodbye as Hoseok and Taehyung head to the lodge for dinner. Jimin brags that he has a personal chef at home, and Hoseok teases them to just get mated already.
They haven’t been able to look at each other since that joke, the air between them nervous and a little awkward.
“Should we hang these up tonight?” Jungkook asks. He has insisted on carrying everything, arms full of flowers.
“Let’s lay them out on the community table. We can hang them tomorrow,” Jimin yawns.
“Tired?” Jungkook wonders as they walk. It’s getting dark now, a few lanterns lit by the square.
“You wore me out today,” Jimin stretches, “I can’t remember the last time I wrestled anyone,” there’s a pause before Jimin admits, “It was fun.”
Jungkook grins, “It was. My wolf really enjoyed it. He was so pumped.”
Jimin tosses his head back with a laugh, “Mine too. I think he sees you as a worthy opponent, or maybe just recognizes he won’t hurt you if he gets a little rough.” Jimin nudges him with his elbow.
“Mm,” Jungkook agrees, “I’m glad you felt that, too. I’m so used to scaring everyone or accidentally making them uncomfortable. It was nice to kind of…let loose.”
“You don’t scare me,” Jimin reassures.
“You don’t scare me, either,” Jungkook steps inside and lays out the garlands. He runs his fingers along the one Jimin made, sunflowers and lilies among ferns. “I mean—you're intimidating. Strong. Maybe a little hard to read. But my wolf really likes that, I think,” he pauses for a moment, blushing, “I really like that.”
“I get what you mean. I like that about you, too,” Jimin leads him back outside. There is a pull to Jungkook. Not despite but because of how intense and powerful he can seem sometimes. How rich his pheromones are. Yet, his personality is so sweet, caring and adorable that it completely throws him for a loop. The duality is exciting.
He walks backwards in front of Jungkook, arms behind his back, “What are you feeding me tonight, hm?”
Jungkook bites his lip, stepping closer into Jimin’s space, “Hungry?”
“Starving,” he can feel his lips are morphing into a suggestive smirk. It feels foreign.
Jungkook’s scent spikes. It’s warm and heady, the cedar wood damp and smelling deeper. “Whatever you want,” his voice is low, dragging out. His eyes flick up and down Jimin’s body, and it has his heart pounding.
“Anything?” Jimin teases. He trails his fingers along the string hanging from the neck of Jungkook’s tunic, tugging it closer.
Jungkook watches, then huffs out a growl.
Jimin gets dizzy, both of their pheromones spiking. He feels something new pooling in his gut. But before it builds, the moment breaks when he stumbles from walking backward, nearly falling. An arm wraps around his waist, pulling him tight against a firm chest. In the commotion, Jungkook’s nose ends up right next to his scent gland.
Jimin shivers, a whine almost slipping out of his throat. They pull closer, tighter for just a moment, Jungkook clearly inhaling deeply and smelling him there before parting.
Jimin laughs it off, “Thanks. Um, that was not embarrassing at all or anything.” He tucks his hair behind his ear as he moves to walk next to Jungkook timidly.
Jungkook chuckles. He slows his steps until he’s behind Jimin. He sighs as he snakes his arms around him, wrapping him in a back hug as they walk up the path home. “You need some help walking? Did you forget how? I don’t want you to hurt yourself,” his voice is low in his ear. His breath ghosts on his neck. It’s goofy and playful, but Jimin’s head swims from the overwhelming warmth of the contact. The way Jungkook’s body consumes his own is an erotic sensation. He drowns in it, eyes fluttering.
“Shut up,” Jimin mumbles, but he has a hard time forming the words as they walk. Jungkook’s hands trail over his stomach and he nearly noses up his neck. He’s pretty sure Jungkook can sense just how much he’s affecting him, but they don’t mention it as they part when they step inside. Jungkook is grinning a little too knowingly.
It’s cozy coming home together. Jimin lights the candles as Jungkook gets things ready in the kitchen, lighting the stove and stoking it.
Jimin sits at the table while Jungkook cooks. He’s dipping a chicken wing into egg and flour, and Jimin arches an eyebrow, “What are you doing to that poor chicken?”
Jungkook giggles quietly, “Trust me, I’ve made this before. This is how they do it in the Northern packs. It will change your life.”
"In a harrowing way?” Jimin is not convinced. Jungkook just snorts.
“You’ll see. You’re going to be moaning and groaning once this hits your lips.”
“I’d bet you’d like that, hm?” Jimin speaks before thinking and then is immediately embarrassed.
They both laugh uneasily, their scents strong and heavy in the room.
“I’m gonna open the window,” Jimin excuses himself. He lets the cool night breeze brush against his heated cheeks, gulping in some fresh air to clear the haze in his head. It’s a good thing he opened it because the house is filling with light smoke as Jungkook tosses the chicken in a hot pan of oil.
It spatters, and Jungkook lets out a very manly squeal, ducking to the side. He holds up a pot lid like a shield, a warrior going to battle. He meets Jimin’s quizzical gaze and just tells him to trust the process.
Once they sit to eat, Jimin pokes at the thick breading on the chicken. Jungkook dives in, it crunches under his teeth, juice spilling across his lips. He makes it look good, so Jimin gives it a try.
“Holy shit,” he really does groan, “What is this? How is it so good?” He takes another bite and another.
Jungkook looks smug, “Told you.”
“I’ll never doubt you again,” he says with a full mouth. He moans and looks at the ceiling reverently. When he looks back, Jungkook is staring at his neck. He elongated it by looking up, and he seems a bit captivated by it now. Jimin subtly looks to the side, baring more of it curiously. His wolf snaps at him, but it’s worth it. Jungkook glares at him, a different kind of heat behind it, leaning closer as his scent spikes wildly.
They keep eating wordlessly, licking at their lips and fingers, the eye contact almost unbearable. It feels like either of them could pounce at any moment.
Jimin thanks him for the meals and washes the dishes while Jungkook bathes. He takes the opportunity to calm down, not sure where all this pent up tension is coming from. When Jungkook emerges, steam pools out of the bathroom while he rubs at his wet hair.
“The bath is still hot,” he notes.
Jimin pointedly does not look at his bare chest and grabs his pajamas and slips into the bathroom with a murmured, “Thanks.”
It smells so heavily of him in here. Jimin slips inside the hot water after showering off, and his whole body reacts. Water splashes on his scent glands, and his eyes roll back. He lets the back of his head hit the tub with a thump, and he runs his hands down his chest, lightheaded. He feels so hazy. Intoxicated. It’s more than just the heat of the water relaxing him. He hums happily.
When he’s finished, he dresses in his night shirt and dries his hair, still in a fuzzy daze. As he steps into the living room, Jungkook is there waiting with two cups of tea and a book in his lap. His legs are crossed, his hair fluffy, lips pouted in concentration. Jimin knows he doesn’t like reading, which makes it cuter. He looks so soft and domestic.
Jungkook suddenly looks up, his face shifts, nostrils flaring.
“Jimin,” he almost whines.
“What is it?” Jimin’s concerned, leaning in to take his cup of lavender tea.
“You,” Jungkook closes his eyes, “you smell like—“
Jimin lifts his wrist to smell himself. There’s a subtle trace of Jungkook’s scent on his own skin, like he’s been lightly scented, and he blushes, “Oh.”
Jungkook bobs his leg, biting at his lip. He keeps fidgeting, drinking his tea as fast as the heat allows, “I’m going to head to bed,” he announces, rinsing his cup. He misses the peg for hanging it up several times, his hands lightly trembling.
“Oh, did you want me to make your tonic?” Jimin wonders, surprised. They usually chat for a while before bed, then Jungkook takes an herbal tonic to help him rest.
Jungkook shakes his head, “Maybe tomorrow. I’m sleepy,” he forces a yawn, stretching his arms above his head.
“That’s good,” Jimin sets his tea aside, “I’m glad. I hope you sleep well.”
Jungkook nods, backing away as Jimin gets closer, “I’ll see you in the morning,” his throat bobs. His eyes keep focusing on Jimin’s neck and darting away.
Jimin stops following him, didn’t realize he had been, “Goodnight, Jungkook.”
As Jimin curls up in his furs, he can’t help sniffing his wrist. Their scents smell nice together, a cedar forest filled with flowers and wet earth. There’s something addicting about it, an alluring sweetness hidden beneath it all. He licks at it, and his toes curl at the faintest taste of it on his tongue. It’s a little perverted, and a swirl of shame twists in his chest. But he keeps breathing in deeply as the scent of them together lulls him to sleep. He dreams of dark hair dripping with wetness, hands wrapping around his hips and being thrown over a firm shoulder.
