“Ok, you two” Jayce announced with a smile “Go brush your teeth, it’s time for bed”
The twins Amaranthine and Naphius both groaned “Daddy, can’t we stay up a little later?” the little girl asked, pouting lip and all
“Yeah. I want to finish my drawing first” Naphius added holding up his paper. A drawing of their family surrounded by colourful flowers.
Jayce shook his head “Sorry you two. You have school tomorrow”
“Fine” his daughter was the first to relent “But I want two stories tonight”
The twins no longer shared a room so Viktor and Jayce rotated bedtime duty for each child. That night Amaranthine was tucked in by Jayce and Naphius tucked in by Viktor. Naphius’s bedroom might as well have been a little library. Books covered every surface from children’s stories to quadratic equation textbooks he’d sneaked off his parents. The boy of a sponge for information. Something he’d gotten from his parents. “... And with that, the Knight brought the lost Prince home, and they all lived happily ever after” Viktor finished the book, pressing a kiss on his son’s forehead “Goodnight, sweetheart”
“Baba?” Naphius or Naph for short asked “Can I ask you a question?”
Viktor smiled “Of course you can, sweetheart. What is it?”
“Where do babies come from?” the little boy asked curiously
His Baba paused for a moment before laughing lightly. He pressed another kiss to his forehead “You’re a little too young to learn that just yet. You’ll learn when you’re older, sweetie”
Naphius frowned “But Baba, I’m seven. I’m a big boy”
“Goodnight, Naphius” Viktor tucked the covers up to his chin then limped over to turn off the light “Sweet dreams”
Across the hall, Jayce had just finished the second story as promised “There we are. Now, you get some sleep ok?”
“Daddy, where do babies come from?” Amaranthine asked much more bluntly than her brother.
Jayce froze for a moment, completely unprepared to be asked this question so soon “Uh...” he panicked till he spluttered out “The stork brings them” he said brightly
“A bird brings babies?” she asked wide eyed.
“Yep. Your baba and I were extra lucky and the stork brought two of you” he then turned on her nightlight “Well, time for bed. Goodnight Ama”
Amaranthine settled down “Night, daddy” she responded, happy with the answer

The next morning, Isha was eating her breakfast at the table across from Powder. A plate of eggs and bacon with juice. Beside her plate was the notebook she always carried with her. Because of her limited speech due to selective mutism, Isha made do with sign language and writing notes when she could. Vander was at the stove cooking more food for when Milo and Claggor arrived. Saving some for Violet when she eventually got back home.
Silco walked into the kitchen flipping through the letters they’d gotten that morning. “Morning, luv” Vander greeted from the cooker
“Morning, V” Silco responded “Already feeding the masses I see”
“I don’t know where Milo fits it all” Vander joked “I swear, he’s got the appetite of a starving lion” he served Silco a plate. Bacon extra crispy and eggs runny. Just how he liked them “Anything interesting?”
“Mm, just junk mail mostly. Oh, and an invitation to a baby shower next week” he held up the invitation for him to see “Her fourth in two years”
Vander winced “They must really be trying for that boy”
Isha looked up from her plate in confusion. She quickly wrote down on the pad next to her and held it up for Powder to see. Why does a baby need a shower?
The blue-haired teen laughed “Oh, it’s not an actual shower Isha. It’s just what they call a party to celebrate a baby coming into the world”
The younger girl nodded but wrote more on the paper. Where do babies come from?
“Uh... Vander?” Powder called for him
“Hm?” Vander turned around, saw what was written on Isha’s paper, and nearly dropped the spatula. “Oh. Uh... Silco?”
The Omega was just as lost as he was. Viktor had never asked this question growing up. He’d seen enough pregnant women in the Lanes to figure it out on his own. Isha on the other hand... “Well,” he began “When two people love each other very much-”
Powder let out an undignified snort “Janna, don’t tell me you’re going with that” she cackled rising from her chair “I’ll be in the other room if you need me”
“Me too” Vander announced turning off the oven and making a quick exit. Leaving Silco to deal with the question alone.
“Cowards” he called after them before looking back at his daughter. She looked up at him expectantly still holding the paper “Janna, give me strength... ok” he sat beside her at the table “How about I tell you a story about Blisters and Bedrock”
From the other room, Vander exclaimed “Absolutely not! She’s too young to learn about secondary gender birds and bees!”
“Well then, you explain it to her!”
Safe to say, Isha left for school that morning none the wiser of where babies came from.
---
After school, it was normal for Isha to be with the twins. The age difference was so little that they were basically growing up as cousins and not aunt and her niece and nephew. The perks of having a child late in life. The three would usually spend time playing or creating harmless mischief but that day, they all came to the same conclusion. Find out where babies come from.
They first asked Ekko, who after going red in the face, told them what Viktor had said. That they’d learn when they're older.
Then they questioned Violet and Caitlyn. The latter having been invited over by the former. “The stork!” Violet said quickly, while Caitlyn just stammered out that they were too young to know that just yet.
By the time Viktor had come to pick them up for home, the trio were still nowhere close to figuring out where babies came from. As Viktor was gathering their coats, Sevika walked into the Last Drop.
“Auntie Sevika?” Naphius asked from across the bar which was full of patrons. “Do you know where babies come from?” the bar went quiet as all turned to look at Sevika.
Sevika raised an eyebrow “Sex. They come from sex”
“Sevika!” Viktor scolded scandalised
---
“Hey Dads? Where do babies come from?” Adrian asked in the middle of dinner
Salo and Howl shared slightly horrified looks, realising their son had gotten to that curious age. “Well...” Howl hesitated “When two people love each other very much...”
