Why not see the Castle before I die?

Chapter 18: Betrayed

Summary:

Tessa joins Heisenberg's crusade to take Mother Miranda down and learns some startling new information from him about her mothers death. And the likelihood of Alcina's involvement in it.

Notes:

So, after saying I hadn't suffered the Ao3 "curse", GUESS WHO GOT COVID! XD Honestly, I shouldn't be surprised. Needless to say I was out of commission for a while. But the brain fog cleared enough here and there that I was able to finish this chapter. The last two chapters will likely take a long time for me to finish as well, since I'm still fighting brain fog most days AND I'm going to make the last two chapters longer than the rest, so continue to have patience with me if you would. <3 Not that anyone's really pestered me to begin with ^^

Chapter Text

Daniela gasped and whined, her wrists straining against the ropes Tessa had tied. The redheaded human chuckled, glancing up the other woman’s naked body, her blue eyes glinting with a mischievous look.

"Surrender?" She cooed, running her tongue over her victim's clit.

Dani bit her lip and whimpered, shaking her head.

"N-no!" she gasped out, though it certainly wasn't confident.

"Mmm, have it your way, Princess." Tessa purred.

She dipped her head down again, exploring Dani's pussy with her tongue. They'd been at it for about ten minutes already, an impressive record for the redheaded Dimitrescu woman for sure, but the human could tell her companion's resolve was waning. She slipped two fingers inside the other woman’s cunt and curled them to stroke that sensitive bundle of nerves inside her. Daniela’s back bowed off the bed and she swore loudly as her bound legs shook. Tessa gave a pleased hum and drew her fingers out slowly before putting them in her mouth and sucking on them while making eye contact with Dani.

"If you don't tap out soon, I may have to leave you like this and go to my piano lesson." Tessa teased as she crawled up the other woman’s body.

She kissed her passionately, nipping her bottom lip playfully as she drew away. Dani huffed and pouted.

"You wouldn’t do that!" She insisted, though her brow furrowed a little as if she wasn't entirely certain.

Tessa raised an eyebrow and reached down to brush her fingers over the bound woman’s sex teasingly.

"Are you sure you want to put it to the test?" She challenged.

Another whimper left the Dimitrescu woman and then she growled.

"Fine!" She whined, blushing furiously as she looked up into Tessa’s eyes.
"Miss Tessa, would you please make me cum like a dirty little whore?"

Tessa gave a wide grin and chuckled, leaning down to kiss her again.

"With pleasure, Princess." she whispered in her ear.

And she did. Twice in quick succession. Once the second orgasm had subsided, Tessa started untying the other woman. Then she pulled Dani into her arms in a tight hug and ran her fingers through her hair gently.

"How are you feeling? Need a little snack?" She murmured softly, searching Daniela’s face for any sign of distress or fatigue.

They had only done sessions with restraints twice before at this point. The youngest Dimitrescu daughter was far more submissive than the other members of her family in general and had been allowing Tessa to test her skills in a more dominant role during sex. But they were taking the whole thing very slowly. The last thing Tessa wanted to do was harm her, even by accident. Not just because she cared deeply for her but also because Alcina would certainly punish her severely for it. Luckily, Dani seemed fine and smiled at Tessa lovingly, shaking her head.

"No, I'm fine. Don't worry so much, Tessa. I had a lot of fun." She reassured her, placing a few soft kisses along the human’s jawline.

Tessa smiled and chuckled softly, petting Dani's hair again.

"I do worry though, I can't help it. I know you're tougher than you seem and I could never really hurt you but that doesn’t mean I wouldn't feel awful if I did, even by accident." she said softly, kissing Daniela's forehead.
"My worry comes hand in hand with my love."

"I love you too, Tessa." Dani whispered, nuzzling into her arms more.

Tessa hugged her tighter and hummed happily, closing her eyes. She did love Daniela. And Cassandra and Bela. Alcina too. All of them. More than they probably suspected. That's why she was so eager to meet with Lord Heisenberg again. She would do anything for these women, even go against them to try and thwart whatever plans Mother Miranda had for them. If it cost her everything, even their love, she'd free them from that woman’s cruel grasp. The biggest obstacle was curing their conditions. The girls could probably live just fine staying in the castle but Alcina? There was something more to her condition that Tessa didn’t quite understand. Something that needed to be managed by Mother Miranda. Unless that’s just what that crazy crow bitch wanted them to think. Tessa wouldn’t put it past her. Giving Alcina some kind of concoction that did nothing in truth but made her believe she would hideously transform if she didn’t take it regularly. It made the redhead sick to even think about it.

For now, she concentrated on keeping busy until she heard from Lord Heisenberg or Lady Beneviento. It had been nearly a week since she had asked the reclusive Lady to convey her willingness to help to her fellow rebellious Lord. So far there wasn’t as much as a peep in return but that didn’t mean much. The factory was quite a long way from the castle and a lot closer to Miranda’s lab. It likely wasn’t easy for him to slip over without notice. But the redhead was anxious and impatient. It felt like something was coming. Something big. Something that could blow everything out of the water. It worried her to no end.

After a few more minutes of cuddling with Dani, Tessa got dressed and headed to the music room. She wasn’t taking “lessons" so much anymore as just playing piano with Bela at this point. They had started working on a few duets they could play together; Bela taking the high parts and Tessa taking the low. They were playing one of those duets when Tessa suddenly had the feeling she was being watched. At first she thought she was probably just being paranoid but then she saw the movement of white fabric out of the corner of her eye and a figure came to stand beside the piano on her side. She stumbled over a few notes as she realized who it was but quickly recovered and refocused her attention on the piece. On her other side, Bela was smirking and trying not to giggle. It took every bit of concentration the redhead could muster to not turn her attention to the woman standing beside her. After all, Alcina  was hard to ignore.

The duo finished their song and Tessa let out a breath she’d been holding since she noticed The Lady’s arrival. Alcina hummed thoughtfully and reached down to run her fingers through the human’s hair.

“Sounds like your diligent studies have paid off. That was beautiful.” She cooed, smiling down at the redhead.

Tessa blushed and gave a shrug.

“Lady Bela’s a good teacher. And partner. Uh, p-playing partner, that is!” she said quickly.

Both Bela and her mother laughed at Tessa’s hasty clarification, causing her blush to deepen. The blonde mimed wiping a tear from her eyes as her laughter subsided and she leaned over to kiss the redhead’s cheek.

“Sorry, Tessa, but you’re so surprisingly bashful sometimes. It’s hard not to find it funny.” She chuckled.

Well it was easy for her to laugh! She wasn’t the one juggling romantic and sexual relationships with a mother and all three of her daughters separately! Tessa huffed and pouted a little at the teasing, earning another chuckle from Alcina. The older woman bent down and kissed the top of her head.

“Poor Tessa. I'd almost feel bad teasing her if we didn’t know she loved the attention so much.” She murmured with a wink before turning her attention to her daughter.

“Sadly, I have to cut your piano practice short, Bela. I need your help in my office. Mother Miranda has given me some unexpected projects that require some delegation to you and your sisters. I've already spoken with Cassandra and Daniela since I knew you were busy with your lesson but I'm afraid it can’t be put off much longer.”

Bela gave an exaggerated sigh and shook her head.

“I suppose it can’t be helped. It’s not as though we won’t have plenty of time to ourselves tonight.” She muttered with a little smirk.

“Well, I'll see you at dinner then, Tessa.”

The blonde cupped the redhead’s cheek and gave her a quick kiss on the lips before she got up off the piano bench. Alcina did the same, giving the human a warm smile before departing. Tessa smiled against both women’s lips, a little shiver of excitement traveling up her spine. She watched the two vampiric women leave and heaved a sigh of her own. Well, now she had a good chunk of unexpected free time. Dani was probably baking with Olivia by now. Maybe she’d pay Cass a surprise visit? She got up from the piano, pulling the cover out over the keys before she left. The redhead lazily made her way in the direction of Cassandra’s room when she suddenly felt a hand on her shoulder.  She spun around to face whoever it was and gasped when she discovered Lord Heisenberg with a finger pressed to his lips. He ushered her into the room he was hiding in and closed the door.

“We've only got a few minutes and then I need to make a bee-line for the cellar.” He muttered as he leaned against the door and pulled another cigar out of his inside coat pocket.

He smirked as he clipped the cigar and struck up a match.

“So, Donna tells me you wanna join the cause. What's your skill set?” he chuckled as he lit his cigar.

“None. Unless you count wood carving and playing the piano. My father taught me how to shoot a gun when I turned thirteen but it’s been years since I picked up anything bigger than a pistol.” Tessa admitted with a sheepish shrug.

“So you’re basically useless. Great.” The man grumbled before taking a big inhale and exhale of smoke.

“I want to do anything I can.” Tessa said tersely.

“I've tried talking to Lady Dimitrescu, to persuade her to fight with you against Miranda but she feels like it’s hopeless. Maybe I'm not useful in a fight but if there’s anything I can do, I want to do it. Even if it gets me killed . . . if it can help you free them . . . I want to do it.”

She scolded herself in her head for the way she started shaking and tears started pricking her eyes, angrily wiping them away with the heel of her palm. But Heisenberg didn’t jeer or scold her for it. He just hummed and nodded, puffing on his cigar thoughtfully. After a moment, he cleared his throat and looked into her eyes over the top of his dark glasses.

“You willing to die? A grizzly, violent, unpleasant death? Cuz that’s the most likely outcome to this. For you, anyway.” He said sternly.

Tessa swallowed but nodded firmly. Yes, she’d figured as much. A bitter smile tugged at her lips and she shrugged.

“I came up here in the first place ready to die. If dying is what it takes to set them free, I can sincerely say it would be a great personal pleasure of mine.” She said quietly.

Heisenberg hummed and gave her a long look, taking another big draw from his cigar. After he exhaled, he nodded.

“Well, you’re not gonna like what I'm gonna ask of you but I'm gonna ask it anyway: I need you to spy. As often as you can, I need you to listen in on her conversations with Miranda. If you’re feeling really brave, I need anything you can grab from her office. Letters, reports, pictures. Anything and everything involving Mother Miranda or that looks like it could be important.” He explained.

Tessa swallowed hard. She was worried this might be the case. It made sense, after all. The greatest weapon they could gain against Miranda was information. Particularly anything about the various conditions she seemed to have inflicted or was helping to manage. Especially regarding Alcina and the girls. She nodded slowly.

“If she catches me, she’ll kill me.” She said plainly.

“Most likely.” Heisenberg agreed.

“Hopefully you can at least get me some useful information before then.”

Tessa bristled and clenched her jaw. No wonder Alcina hated associating with him. The man didn’t mince words or even try and present himself in a pleasant manner.

“How do I get valuable information to you if and when I find it?” she asked, folding her arms over her chest.

“Best bet is the cellar. There’s a tunnel far at the back hidden by some barrels and a stone pillar that leads to the village just outside of the factory. If you can stash whatever you find just inside there, it’ll get to me.”

The redhead shifted nervously. She wasn’t allowed in the cellar. It was going to be hard to get down there without raising suspicion. Then again, she wasn’t allowed to spy either. Would it be worth roping Cass in on things maybe? She could move more freely through the castle and undetected at that. Maybe she’d ask her about it the next time it was Cassandra’s turn to have her for the night.

“Fine. I'll do what I can.” She agreed with a sigh.

Lord Heisenberg nodded and stuck out his hand with a grin.

“Nice to have ya on board, Red.”

Tessa rolled her eyes but shook his hand.

“Can't you come up with a more creative nickname than just pointing out my hair color?” she grumbled, shaking her head.

“Hair color? I more had in mind the way that freckled face lights up red when you’re flustered.” He purred, pulling his glasses down a bit and giving her a wink.

Tessa clenched her jaw tightly and tried, in vain, to not let her face redden at his words. She tried to pull her hand from his grasp in a huff but he held her there a moment longer. Her eyes snapped to his, angry words on her lips but the look in his eyes gave her pause. His brow was furrowed and he studied her face carefully.

“You any relation to Felicity Fairchilde?” he muttered.

Tessa felt her heart jump into her throat. What color had rushed to her cheeks drained just as quickly. She searched the man's eyes desperately, taking back the step she had taken away from him.

“How did you know my mother?” she asked urgently.

She could feel her heart fluttering like a frantic bird fighting to escape the cage of her chest. Heisenberg knew her mother at least well enough to make the connection between her and her daughter. Surely that meant he had to know her quite well. Tessa didn’t resemble her mother very much on first glance. Felicity had brown hair as opposed to her daughter’s vibrant copper and her skin was darker as well, likely due to her being born and growing up in a part of the world where the sun was more present year-round. But they shared a nose, from what Tessa could remember of her face, and they had the same bright blue eyes. Heisenberg seemed to deliberate for a moment. Was he trying to recall details? Was he trying to determine how much Tessa knew about her mother? Or was he regretting saying anything at all? After the longest moment of silence in history he tilted his head, inspecting the redhead more.

“You must have been, what? 10? 13 at most when she passed?” he questioned.

Tessa scoffed and narrowed her gaze.

“Fifteen. If you’re trying to flatter me to dodge the question, it’s not going to work.” She said sternly.

He chuckled and shook his head.

“You’re stubborn like her, that’s for damn sure.” He muttered.

He sighed and let go of Tessa’s hand, shoving his hands into the pockets of his trench coat.

“I guess you could say I know her from work. She was sniffing around Mirander's work for a while.” He said carefully.

Tessa felt her throat start to constrict. Miranda. Every fucking hardship in her life could be traced back to that fucking harpy. She swallowed the lump rising in her throat.

“Why would a mycologist be interested in anything that odious woman does?” she asked, battling the rising rage and fear that was threatening to overtake her.

“We don’t have time to get into the whole thing, Red. I have a factory to get back to and you have to get back to whatever you were doing before I took up your attention.” The man said gruffly.

“Did Miranda kill her?” Tessa asked, her voice wavering and expression furious.

“What does that change, Re- Tessa? She’s still dead either way and you still hate Mirander plenty without knowing.” He replied firmly.

The Lord put a hand on her shoulder and gave it a tight squeeze.

“Use that. Channel it to the cause. I'll be looking for updates as often as I can.” He said seriously, looking into her eyes.

Tessa took a deep breath and nodded. Heisenberg patted her shoulder and straightened up.

“Atta girl. Take a minute to cool off.” he said as he went to the door.

“Lord Heisenberg?” Tessa murmured as he grabbed the handle.

He stopped, glancing back at the redhead but she  wasn’t looking at him.

“Yeah?” he pressed.

“Did Lady Dimitrescu know her too?” she asked quietly.

The man paused for a moment again and sighed.

“Far as I know . . . Most likely.” He replied.

“Your mom was a topic of discussion more than once in our meetings.”

Tessa nodded stiffly as the older man slipped out the door. The redhead stood alone in the empty room for a long time after he left. She wasn’t sure what she was feeling in that moment. A lot of anger, that was easy to distinguish. New grief over the loss of her mother. Despite Heisenberg’s words, this information changed everything. She had seen her mother’s death as natural and unavoidable. How many people around the world lost loved ones to cancer? Even sudden illness without a definitive explanation wasn’t unheard of. But the idea that her mother was murdered? The thought that her life was cut short when she could have had so many more years? It was almost more than Tessa could bear. And, on top of that, to learn that Alcina knew what happened and didn’t say anything? She wasn’t sure how she was going to go about life now without letting on how broken she felt.

Before she knew it, she was in front of Cassandra’s door. She didn’t even remember leaving the room Heisenberg had brought her into but her body had carried her here regardless. Her hand went up to knock just as the door was opening. Cass blinked in surprise when she saw Tessa standing there but smiled a little.

“Didn’t expect to see you until dinnertime. I thought you and Bela would be busy with your lesson.” She said with a sarcastic smirk.

Then she seemed to notice the redhead’s expression and her brow furrowed in concern.

“Tessa? What’s wrong?” she asked.

Tessa shook her head and swallowed as she searched for her voice.

“I need . . . I need to not be able to think for a few minutes.” She replied as she stepped closer to the other woman.

Cass nodded in understanding and wrapped an arm around the human’s waist to pull her into the room.

“That can be arranged.” She cooed, closing the door again as she started kissing the redhead roughly.

Tessa gave herself over to Cassandra and let her mind go blank. This was what she loved most about the brunette. No questions asked, no need to know what was going on. Just sex. Mindless, raw, pleasurable. In a way, it helped her reconnect with herself and her body. And Cass knew just what she needed when she said she didn’t want to think. They were both panting heavily by the time they were done and Tessa laid back on the Dimitrescu woman's bed, staring up at the ceiling as her body buzzed. Cass laid beside her, playing with her hair absently.

“Any explanation for the sudden need to forget how to think?” she asked casually.

Tessa shook her head and sat up.

“Not yet. Someday. Maybe.” She said curtly.

She went to move to the edge of the bed and Cass reached out to grab her wrist. The redhead looked back at her and the brunette gave her a worried look.

“You’re not going to do anything stupid, right?” she pressed.

Tessa sighed and shook her head, offering the other woman a slight smile.

“No more stupid than usual.” She said quietly.

Cass nodded and let her go, leaning back on the bed.

“Alright. That’s all I need to know. Sorry for bringing it back up.”

Tessa nodded and grabbed her dress from where it had fallen and started pulling it on. She dressed in silence, struggling with the zipper for a bit and about to get frustrated when Cass came up and helped her. The brunette put a hand on the redhead’s shoulder when she was done and kissed the side of her neck.

“See you at dinner still?” she questioned.

The human nodded and offered her another, more convincing smile.

“Can’t miss it, can I? It’s my turn, silly.” She murmured.

“Remind me tomorrow, when it’s your turn to have me, I wanted to ask you something. By then I think I'll be ready to talk about it.”

Cassandra nodded and let Tessa go. The redhead slipped out of the room and made her way down the stairs to the study they used for feedings to wait. Now that she didn’t have the distraction of Cassandra, the human thought back on the information Heisenberg had revealed to her. She needed to compartmentalize her anger and betrayal before she faced Alcina. She needed to be able to smile in her face and have her not think anything was wrong. Which was a hard task at the best of times. By now, the older woman knew her more intimately than anyone. And she certainly wasn’t afraid to call the redhead out on even the smallest of changes.

Bela was the first person to arrive in the study after Tessa. The blonde smiled at the redhead as she entered and flew over to her side, sitting on the arm of the chair she was waiting in.

“Surely you haven’t been sitting in here all by yourself since our lesson ended, have you?” she asked as she absently played with the human’s hair.

Tessa chuckled and shook her head.

“Does that sound like me? No, I was with Cass for a while after you left.” She replied, leaning into the blonde’s affectionate touch.

Bela hummed and nodded, a smirk pulling at her lips. She reached down and cupped the side of Tessa’s face, turning her head to look up at her.

“I hope she didn’t wear you out. You know I intend to make up for our lesson getting cut short when you join me tonight.” She cooed, leaning down to kiss Tessa.

The redhead smiled against her lips and closed her eyes. Good. More distractions. She’d take all she could get. When Bela pulled out of the kiss, Tessa smirked at her and nodded.

“I’m looking forward to it, Mistress Bela.” She whispered.

“You’re fishing for a ‘Good Girl’ but I’m not as free with praise as Mother is.” The blonde purred, her hand trailing down to grasp the human’s throat.

She leaned down to whisper into Tessa’s ear.

“You've got to put in a little more tongue work to earn it.” She growled, digging her nails into the redhead’s skin slightly.

“Dessert before dinner, Bae? I thought you had more discipline than that.” Cassandra teased as she walked into the study.

“Tessa surely knows more about discipline than Bela at this point.” Dani added as she arrived with Olivia.

Bela chuckled and kissed Tessa on the cheek before sitting up and taking her hand from her neck.

“Vent your frustrations all you want, I know it comes from jealousy.” The blonde retorted, flipping her golden locks over her shoulder.

Dani huffed and Cass smirked. Tessa looked at the redheaded Dimitrescu sister and beckoned her over. She came and sat in the human’s lap and Tessa leaned in to kiss her neck.

“Don’t be a bad loser. It'll be your turn in two days.” She cooed softly.

Daniela sighed and gave a nod, leaning down to kiss Tessa’s lips softly. When she pulled away, the human opened her mouth to say something else but stopped short. She felt her throat constrict as her eyes fell on Alcina entering the room. The redheaded human forced a smile onto her face despite the churning in her stomach. She needed to say something, anything to keep the older woman from scrutinizing her behavior.

“Good Evening, My Lady.” She settled on, giving Alcina a nod.

The vampiric woman nodded back and poured herself and Tessa a glass of wine. The redhead didn’t need the drink to relax anymore normally, it had just become a habit over time. She was grateful of it tonight. When the drink was offered, she struggled to make and keep eye contact with Alcina before taking a sip. The Lady’s hand reached out and the redhead moved her glass aside and raised her head up to meet it, nuzzling her cheek against the open palm and closing her eyes. Why did everything have to be so complicated? Why couldn’t she just enjoy this? The image of her mother withering away in bed entered her mind to remind her. Alcina knew her mother, possibly how she died, and said nothing to Tessa about it. A goddamn man, who only met her twice, was able to see the resemblance and make the connection. Surely she had to have as well. Especially considering she knew every inch of the human woman’s body.

“You seem tired, Tessa. I hope my daughters aren’t wearing you out too much during the day.” The Lady cooed, gently rubbing her thumb over the redhead’s cheek.

The human hummed and opened her eyes. The look of concern on the older woman’s face was a bit exaggerated but still genuine. Or at least, what she perceived as genuine. It was hard to know now when she was being sincere. Tessa had thought she could tell before today.

“It’s a terrible burden, My Lady, truly; being used and pursued by gorgeous women all day long. But, then, we all have our burdens, I suppose.” She replied, playfully pretending to be worn out and forlorn.

That seemed to satisfy Alcina and the older woman chuckled as she pulled her hand away from Tessa’s cheek. She tutted and shook her head, swirling the wine in her glass absently.

“Poor thing. What a terrible fate we’ve forced upon you.” She teased back, leaning down to kiss the redhead.

The human closed her eyes again, smiling against Alcina’s lips. It wasn’t as funny as it should have been. Tessa was feeling more and more like a terrible fate had been forced upon her. She had wanted to die. That was what she had been ready for. But here she was, still alive and in the most pleasurable torment. Surrounded by women who doted on her and used her for pleasure. She loved and was loved by all of them. If left to their own devices, they would all live very happily together; practically a fairytale ending. But there were secrets, lies, half truths, and, worst of all, Miranda. Miranda, who seemed hell bent on making every last one of them miserable. She wanted Alcina and the girls dependent on and beholden to her. And she probably wanted Tessa dead. That dichotomy, having everything she wanted but having the threat of it all being taken away at any moment, was the sweetest kind of torment she could imagine.

Alcina pulled away from the kiss and the evening progressed. The girls all took a feed from Tessa followed by Lady Dimitrescu. She lingered a moment as she drew her lips away from the crook of the redhead’s arm, placing a few soft kisses on the soft part of her forearm. Tessa was afraid to look in her eyes. The more The Lady fawned over her, the more heartbroken she felt. How could someone who seemed to care so much about her keep such important information from her? She managed to give the older woman a smile as she pulled away but this time it didn’t seem sufficient. Alcina’s brow furrowed and she searched the redhead’s eyes.

“Darling, are you certain you’re alright? You seem . . . Off.” She commented.

Tessa was certain the other woman could hear her heart pounding and the blood rushing to her ears. She furrowed her brow in return and tilted her head to the side.

“I suppose I could be coming down with something. Did I taste off?” she asked.

Lady Dimitrescu shook her head, seeming to be thinking through things. The redhead’s stomach dropped as something seemed to click into place in her mind. The Lady straightened up to her full height, maintaining eye contact with the human.

“Olivia, wait for me upstairs. Girls, give us a moment.” She said firmly.

“Mother? What's wrong?” Dani asked hesitantly, already moving towards Tessa.

“Nothing's wrong, Daniela. Just please leave Tessa and I alone for a moment.” She said, glancing back at her daughters.

They all gave Tessa a look before nodding and shuffling out the door. Once they were alone, Alcina went to her drink cart and poured another glass of wine for herself. She sipped it for a few moments before sighing and looking straight ahead.

“What was the nature of your visit with Heisenberg, Tessa?” she muttered.

It was impossible to fool her. The redhead drank the rest of her wine as she contemplated how to answer. Clearly, she wasn’t going to be able to spy, not if Alcina could catch her out so easily.

“What gave it away?” the human asked, not daring to look at the other woman.

“Answer the question, Tessa.” The Lady hissed.

Tessa swallowed and nodded.

“He came to try and recruit my help in fighting back against Mother Miranda.” She confessed.

Lady Dimitrescu didn’t respond right away. She finished her wine and set the glass down on the cart.

“It’s not enough that he continues to pester me with this nonsense, now he’s trying to turn my own household against me.” She groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose.

“How did you respond to his request?”

“I told him I'd do whatever I could.” The redhead replied.

“Which entails?” Alcina pressed.

“Dropping eves. Smuggling important seeming letters and paperwork to him. Trying to convince you to join in.” Tessa divulged.

“So . . . You hate Mother Miranda more than you love and respect me?”

Tessa could feel her face grow hot. She set her empty glass aside and stood up, facing Alcina who seemed surprised. Her temper won out against sense, it seemed.

“If you want to talk about love and respect, My Lady, I’m all for it. Let's talk about how little you have to love or respect someone to hide the truth from them about the death of a loved one. A death that set their life on a path of abuse, alcoholism, and depression. A path that led up to the doors of this very castle with a sincere wish to end it all and see that loved one again. Let’s talk about Felicity Anne Fairchilde-Odette!”
