Work Text:
The hot Vacuo sun blazed down onto Team RWBY as the group were defending a convoy from a Grimm attack just outside of the city. Ruby had taken up a position on top of one of the trucks, taking point to snipe and strategize with the rest of the team, though Weiss was suspicious that maybe Ruby was still doubting herself when it came to fighting. Meanwhile, just ahead of her, Blake and Yang were dealing with a whole group of Centinels; honestly, Weiss was hoping they’d be done with them since leaving Atlas, but it seems that Vacuo had a variation of the arthropod Grimm.
As she watched the Bees duo fighting, Weiss rolled her eyes; it was hard enough seeing them constantly flirt with each other outside of missions, but on missions themselves the pair were completely in sync and knew what each other were going to do without even speaking. It frustrated her, and while she was happy the pair had finally gotten together, she couldn’t keep the twinge of jealousy in her chest contained whenever she saw them.
“Blake, Yang, Protect Weiss!” Ruby suddenly shouted out over the comms.
Weiss was about to turn around to shout that she didn’t need protecting, but it was as she turned that she noticed the sand shifting in her blind spot. All she could manage to do in that moment was jump back with a glyph just as a Death Stalker leapt up from the sand.
‘Of fucking course Vacuo Death Stalkers would be burrowers,’ Weiss cursed to herself.
Before Weiss could act against the Grimm, Blake sailed past her head, most likely thrown by Yang in an instant without them even needing to plan. The blade of Gambol Shroud’s katana had gotten embedded into the armour of the Death Stalker, but it wasn’t enough to get through , not until Yang propelled herself down and hammered both her fists down onto the sword, killing the Grimm in the process.
With the Death Stalkers’ elimination, the Grimm problem seemed to be cleared, and Weiss was ashamed that she was distracted in a mission by her own dumb feelings that she should have been able to ignore anyway.
“Your prince and knight have come to your rescue, princess.” Yang tipped her stupid ten-gallon and gave the white haired girl a wink, and Weiss had to fight the urge to blush as her face began to go red.
Yang had gotten the hat to protect herself from the intense sun, and she had also somehow managed to convince Blake to get one as well, one that was designed for cat Faunus ears. Yang tried to get Weiss to buy one too, but she refused to wear a dumb hat like that.
“So am I the knight, or the prince?” Blake questioned her girlfriend .
“Well, I was thinking I’d be more princely, but you are Faunus royalty, handsome," the blonde replied with a wink.
Blake blushed deeply and played with her hair. “I think you’re more of a knight than I am, sir, but I’m not royalty, chieftain is just a political title."
Weiss crossed her arms and huffed. “Well, I’m not a princess who needs to be rescued, thank you very much.” With that, she turned and stormed off from the duo as fast as she could, leaving Blake and Yang giving each other confused looks as they watched her leave.
Weiss managed to ignore anything else they were saying, having become unable to stand them flirting with each other anymore.
Ruby gave the ex-heiress a quizzical look as Weiss sat down next to her.
“Soooo, you wanna talk about what that all was about, Weiss?”
“No, I don’t," Weiss pouted, "so let's put a pin in that and just finish this mission.” She stared out into the desert, putting her mind to use to spot any remaining Grimm whilst trying her best to zone out everything else.
Weiss was thankful that after that mission the team had some time off, and so she decided to spend her free time with her family, which, coincidentally, also kept her away from Blake and Yang. However, it seemed as though in the time that Team RWBY spent in the Ever After, her family's dynamic had changed a lot. With the help of Qrow, her mother had been sober for a few months now, a change that made Weiss smile every time they spoke with each other. Needless to say, Weiss was thankful to have her back in her life again.
Whitley, meanwhile, seemed to be dealing with the same issues as Weiss, though she admittedly was a bit shocked when she initially saw the normally stoic boy blushing up a storm around Oscar.
Winter, despite being the Winter Maiden now, was the least changed of the family, which unfortunately meant that she was always busy and never around.
And today just so happened to be one when all of them were busy, leaving Weiss alone to just sit around the dorm room Team RWBY had been given by the headmaster of Shade Academy.
“So," Ruby's voice suddenly spoke out, making Weiss jump out of her skin. She hadn't even noticed her entering the dorm room. "Do you wanna talk about the weird mood you’ve been in recently, Weiss?"
Weiss scoffed and turned away from Ruby. “What is there to even talk about? I faltered on a mission, and had to be rescued by my teammates.”
“It’s not just that mission, Weiss," Ruby responded in a soft voice. "You’ve been weird about Blake and Yang ever since we got back from the Ever After.”
“Why would I be acting weird about my friends finally getting together after months of them being so awkward around each other," Weiss shouted defensively.
Ruby crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow in annoyance. "Well, maybe cause it’s obvious you've had a crush on both of them since Beacon and you’re jealous of them. It’s so obvious that even Jaune is noticing, so why don’t you just, ya know, ask them out.”
“A-Ask them out?” Weiss sputtered. "Um, because they’re already dating each other? If you want to take Beacon into consideration, why don’t you ask Emerald out since you had such an obvious crush on her back then too!” The ex-heiress knew that was a low blow after everything that happened, but she still said it anyway.
Ruby’s expression darkened. “Emerald is… was different. She wasn't the person I thought she was, and after losing Penny..." She curled up her legs to her chest and sighed. "Look… I might have lost my chance, but I don’t think you need to give up yours.”
Weiss curled up next to Ruby and wrapped her arms around the younger girl."I'm… sorry, Ruby, I should have just kept my mouth shut. But what chance do I even have? I'm not a 'princess,' I don't get a happily ever after when Pyrrha chose Jaune and Blake and Yang chose each other. I mean, not even a weird fairy tale world thought I had a chance with them! So... why would I ask them out now that they're clearly happy with just each other?”
It was Ruby’s turn to scoff next. “The Ever After may have thought they needed the extra push, but you don’t need a magical force to get you to do anything. Also, Yang isn’t subtle with her flirting, Weiss. Like, have you been ignoring their obvious flirts aimed at you?”
“Yang flirts with every girl she sees!”
Ruby leaned back and gave her a questioning look. "Weiss, have you seen her flirt with anyone else besides you and Blake since we got back from the Ever After?”
“Well… I… you…” Weiss had done her best to ignore them, but, truthfully she had noticed that detail. “I’m so dumb and blind, aren’t I?”
“Well, only half blind.” Ruby let out a small chuckle; her jab at Weiss eye was enough to bring a smile to the ex-heiress’ face again
“Oh, and the hat, why didn't it hit me then?!" Weiss panicked. "A-and Blake was obviously happy with it and going along with it too...Ruby, have I really been so dense?"
“My dear Weiss, I'm afraid you were reaching Jaune levels of density.”
Weiss took a deep breath. "Wow...that hits deep." Now filled with a new confidence, the white haired girl got up from the bed and triumphantly stood in the middle of the room.
"Okay I’m going to do it: next time I see them I will ask them out on a date!”
"Yes!" Ruby shouted encouragingly, "You go get 'em, Weiss!"
Weiss turned to the younger girl and gave her a soft smile. “Thanks Ruby… I think you should at least try to talk with Em a bit more. Honestly? I think you both just need someone to talk to, after, well, everything.”
Ruby fell back onto the and thought for a moment. "It's...weird still having her around after Beacon," she finally said. "But...I will think about it."
Weiss smirked. “Get some rest, brave leader, you can woo the girl tomorrow.”
Ruby gave her a joking glare, pillow armed in-hand. “Get out of here before I regret helping you with your problems, Ice Queen.” Aiming to avoid a pillow launched at her head, Weiss quickly slipped out the door.
It didn’t take long for Weiss to find Yang and Blake; she found them flirting on the couch in the common room where, thankfully, no one else was around. Weiss pushed back the pang of jealousy that grew in her chest as she gathered her breath and thoughts, and approached the pair.
“Yang, Blake,” Weiss stood in front of them, hands crossed nervously. "Would the two of you care to go out for some boba tea? Assuming that you'd be, uh, accepting of the possibility of it becoming a...romantic date?"
‘Gods, that was terrible.’ Weiss thought to herself as she blushed intensely.
Yang turned to Blake with a shocked expression that was quickly replaced by a wide smirk. "I think the Ice Princess just asked us out on a romantic date, Sir Belladonna. Honestly, I was thinking it’d take a bit longer to thaw out her frozen heart.”
“Yang, don’t be like that,” Blake replied, playfully punching her partner’s arm. “Though, I’m also shocked. I thought that we’d have to be the ones to eventually ask her out.”
Weiss was confused by the duo’s reactions. "Is that a yes or no? Cause if you're going to reject me, I’d like it done quickly without whatever this is.”
Blake rolled her eyes. “Weiss, of course we want to go out with you.”
“Yeah, Weiss," Yang replied in a more serious tone. "We honestly weren’t sure if you had a thing for the both of us, or if we were just making fools of ourselves for weeks now. Like, did you just not notice us flirting?”
Weiss sat down next to Blake and Yang, and leaned into Yang's shoulder, thankful she had them on her right side so she didn’t have to look too far to see them.
“I just… what was I meant to think when you two only just got together?" and why would I have tried to even push myself between my friends' relationship. I wouldn’t have said anything if it wasn’t for Ruby noticing how much of an idiot I am, and giving me a push.”
Yang wrapped her arm around Weiss and pulled her in closer. "Damn, didn’t think I’d have to thank my lil sis for getting me another girlfriend, but guess I do now!”
Blake leaned in close to the pair. "Our leader has really grown into a mature woman,” she said with a pained smile, “Though I wish she didn’t have to in such a short time.”
“Look, Ruby has grown, but we still need to be there for her, and if whatever we are gets in the way of that…" Weiss spoke in a serious tone, giving Blake and Yang a small glare before smiling happily at the pair. "Then I will break it off immediately.”
“Hey, wait a second, protective older sister is my job!" Yang said, giving Blake a fake pleading expression. "Blake, our new girlfriend is trying to steal my heart and my sister."
“Excuse you, I am Ruby’s so-called best friend, so I also get to be protective if people hurt her,” Weiss shot back.
Blake rolled her eyes at the antics of both of them. “Ruby was the one who told you to ask us out though, so she must not have an issue with us being together.”
Yang leaned back in the chair, pulling Weiss and Blake with her. “I give it maybe two days before she regrets it and yells at us for kissing in front of her again,” she chuckled.
“Yang Xiao Long, you’re taking me out on a date before you’re allowed to be kissy towards me,” Weiss huffed, crossing her arms across her chest. “This is new to me, and I would rather take things slowly.”
“Aww, so I can’t give the princess a smooch on the lips yet,” Yang pouted to Weiss whilst wriggling her eyebrows. “After all, that’s how the fairy tales go before happily ever after.”
“Yang, Weiss said she wanted to go slow and we should respect that,” Blake said, maintaining her position as the more reasonable one of the duo, before adding with a small grin, “Despite how much we want to show our princess some love.”
“I’ll let you both give me one kiss before the date,” Weiss stammered out. Her face was completely red with a blush.
Blake and Yang turned to each other, both flashing a smile before giving Weiss a kiss on both cheeks at the same time. A moment which seemed to last forever in Weiss’s mind.
“Oh thank god,” Jaune shouted from behind them, pulling Weiss completely out of the moment. “Honestly, I was getting ready to throw you three into the Ever After again.”
“Goddamn it Jaune,” Yang shouted from the couch as she turned towards the blonde boy, “are you gonna interrupt all our kisses?!”
Jaune shrugged at the trio. “Wanted a drink, didn’t expect to see you three finally getting together after weeks of fucking around.”
Weiss picked up a cushion from the chair and chucked it at Jaune. “Go back to Ren and Nora, I’m sure your own boyfriend and girlfriend want you there instead of bothering us.”
Jaune moved out of the way of the cushion. “Hey, at least it didn’t take us over a month to sort out our feelings," he shouted as he walked away.
Weiss let out a deep sigh and laid out across Yang’s lap with her head resting on Blake's. “Well, so much for taking things slowly, He's probably going to tell Nora, and then she'll be the one to let everyone else know.”
Yang brushed her hand through Weiss’ hair and smiled down at her. "You say that like it's a bad thing, Weiss Cream.”
“Yang was probably going to shout it from the highest building anyway,” Blake chuckled, running her hand along Weiss’ cheek and tracing her finger around the scar affectionately. “And I would've joined her.”
Weiss’ face lit up with a bright red blush. “I already regret asking you both out.”
The trio all smiled at each other, basking in the moment. It all felt like a dream to Weiss; she was being held by the two people she loved, and, gratefully, they both loved her as well. Weiss closed her eyes, slowly drifting off to sleep, hoping that when she woke up she would still be in her girlfriends’ arms.
