Long Version (commentary) :
Winter - Daughter
"My youth has stained our sheets with some piece of me/With some piece of me/Oh, winter come/Winter crush all of the things that I once loved"
- Perspective: Satoru
- Vibe Notes: Literally, winter. This song always chills me. Callback to the cold sheets left behind in Collar of Truth last season. The helpless longing aching feeling of knowing someone you used to be so close to, that you needed so desperately, has become a stranger to you. And you to them. They're too similar, their flaws shared, philosophies reversed. Suguru killing his prey (monkeys) out of revenge for all the curses they form. Satoru wishing to go back in time, again and again. Wishing for an end to the pain.
Already Over - Red
"I give it all to you/I offer up my soul/It's already over/Already over now"
- Perspective: Suguru
- Vibe Notes: Another song that gives me haunting vibes. Satoru isn't the only one who never really got over them. There's still a part of him that regrets leaving, just a bit. This is a song about surrender. Vibes for possible redemption/SatoSugu getting back together. Alternatively: He's been defeated, and Satoru has come for him in the end. There will be no next time, it's over.
I Don't Care - VIOLENT VIRA
"Getting ready for my demise/But I know I'll be okay from that/look in your beautiful... / And I know I'm not going anywhere that's not downstairs"
- Perspective: Suguru
- Vibe Notes: Suguru admitting to all he has done. The whole Night Parade thing, and yeah the attack at the elementary school was him too. He truly believed in what he was doing and he doesn't regret killing those monkeys. Never held any hatred for Satoru or his students, of course. He's a kind person after all....But he's going to hell. He knows that. It's time to pay for what he's done. But it's okay, as long as Satoru is with him, with those beautiful blue eyes...he'll go in peace.
Destroy Me - Mr. Kitty
"I couldn't run/I wouldn't hide/Lay on the ground/I should have died/Red river flows/Lights start to fade/Your work is done/Please let me decay"
- Perspective: Suguru (on original mix)
- Vibe Notes: For that part of him that knows he's gone too far, secretly wishing for Satoru to stop him. For the time when he finally does, too heavily wounded by Yuta/Rika to run, it's time for Satoru to finally execute him. He'll give up, for him. Vibes for Suguru's body being evidently not destroyed enough.
My Last Breath - Evanescence
"Holding my last breath/Safe inside myself/Are all my thoughts of you/Sweet raptured light?/It ends here tonight"
- Perspective: Suguru (on original mix)
- Vibe Notes: For the thought that Satoru held him (and cried) one last time, after the scene goes black, who knows? Who knows what words were said? I think most fans like to think it was "I love you". He never hated Satoru, or anyone from the jujutsu school. He loved him, 'til the day that he died. Dying with those thoughts, finally able to smile honestly at the end. He'll miss the winter.
You're Not Gone, You're Just Dead! - VIOLENT VIRA
"To the coffin, to the tiles/Waiting for the afterlife/My confession won't suffice/There is still too much life left in your eyes"
- Perspective: Satoru
- Vibe Notes: Satoru's side of the moment, Suguru not quite dead yet but it's undeniably the end for them. The revered Gojo Satoru, with all his power, in this moment a mere man unable to save the one most important to him. Wishing he could have been there, when Suguru was suffering most and spiralling into madness, to stop all this before it began. Deathbed confessions (the silent words?) The conflicting feelings he must have had, to be able to kill Suguru but still not properly dispose of his body or what remains(...what did he even do with it?) , which would ultimately be the death of him.
It Hurts Until It Doesn't - Mothers
"I felt alive for a little while/But when I died I had the time to notice/I was crushed by the weight of my own ego/but never honest enough to say it"
- Perspective: Suguru
- Vibe Notes: Suguru's afterlife, coming to peace with everything unsaid, thoughts pushed away and justified around, broken promises. Reflections on their short but precious springtime of youth. How he never went back on his decision to leave, he was too far in to give himself up. Soft and a little regretful. Somewhat of a curse!Geto vibe, haunting or watching over Satoru.
Saw You In A Dream - The Japanese House
"I saw you in a dream, you stayed the same/You were beckoning me, said that I had changed/Tried to keep my eyes closed, I want you so bad/Then I awoke and it was so sad"
- Perspective: Satoru (on original mix)
- Vibe Notes: I think the fans like this one, catchy and straightforward. Could be just a dream, could be Curse!Geto vibes. He's never getting over it. Here in the mix after-death but could apply to the long in-between years too. He's so vulnerable to an imposter because he's so desperate to see his Suguru again. Damn it this song is too sad to be this catchy!
Haunt You Still - Softcult
"I'll never say a bitter word about you/But I wouldn't blame you if bitterness found you/Do I haunt you still in your memories?"
- Perspective: Suguru
- Vibe Notes: Yes, ghost!Geto, you do haunt his dreams. He never held any bitter thoughts for his Satoru, or any of their sorcerer friends, or even the students. He's definitely caused him enough pain and reasons for bitterness, but still hopes maybe there's still fond memories of their youth too. Always an angel -> Become god -> be a devil on his shoulder? Time didn't heal, it only made them older, and sadder.
Neon Moon - Cigarettes After Sex
"If you lose your one and only/There's always room here for the lonely/To watch your broken dreams/Dance in and out of the beams of a neon moon"
- Perspective: Satoru
- Vibe Notes: "One and only" mention! Another one that could be for the in-between years or after death. Scenes we never see but probably happened: Sad adult Gojo at a bar sulking. Ruminating on broken dreams and the loss of his first love. He's never coming back...
Familiar Fields- Duster
"And I thought we had forever and that we would have it all/The secret on the breath like a path to lead you home/I hear your voice like you're still here/Part of a dream I can't remember"
- Perspective: Satoru
- Vibe Notes: A slow and depressing vibe to wind down the mix. While relatively clear for Duster, the vocals are very soft and faded into the background so you'll probably need to look at the lyrics. A dreamy sort of yearning. They were the strongest, meant to be together forever...Wait for him, next Christmas Eve, they'll be together again.
Three years of youth overflowing - 照井順政(Yoshimasa Terui)
- Perspective: Satoru , of course.
- Vibe Notes: The BGM for That Scene in the Shibuya Incident that hit me so, so hard. This is what made SatoSugu go from "interesting vibes" to my OTP brainrot obsession. The soft "Yo, Satoru" first name no honorific from a guy we know cares about using proper keigo and honorifics and has been calling him this since they were friends, not enemies. That's pure affection. That stops him dead in his tracks, the strongest, fastest sorcerer in that most critical moment, has a whole
dead wife montageflashback of memories that hit so hard he gets captured. The way the anime elevated the scene with the visual effects and music got me tearing up! Then of course we get the switch to a much more ominous tone when Kenjaku's body-snatching is revealed. He looks, sounds, and even has Geto's cursed energy signature, but he knows that's not his Suguru! How the right arm (that Suguru didn't even have when he died?) tries to stop Kenjaku from hurting Gojo, somehow, no explanation, even in-universe it shouldn't be possible but, power of love?? They're so gay and also so doomed <3
The End! Check out "Like Fear, Like Love" for more "they're so gay and also so doomed" vibes.
