Work Text:
The Power of Dreams
Buck awoke in a hospital room, memories of the truck bombing and right after at the front of his mind. As well as the weird dreams of allowing his sister to take over his care during and after his stay in the hospital. And just how that turned out.
Signs that his sister had spent the night by his bedside were around and he pushed the nurse’s button to get someone before she returned from wherever.
Demanding to know who the doctors and staff had been listening to because if it was Madaline Buckley, she was nowhere in his paperwork. However, Edmundo Ramon Diaz held his Medical Power of Attorney, with Athena Grant-Nash second, and Edmundo’s Aunt, Josephina Isabella Diaz third. If they had done anything other than listen to one of those people, they had better be prepared to back up why they had done so to his law firm.
And get him on the phone with one of those listed right now, and not his sister, whose presence shows who they otherwise listened to. And he wanted her banned from his room and floor right away. And for the duration of his stay with them.
A half hour of literal verbal yelling and fighting with his sister later, and Eddie, with Chris, was by his side, and getting an emergency doctor’s report on what Maddie had wanted done and started the process on.
Most of which was stopped, with discussions amongst them as to what would be best going forwards.
Buck would be in the hospital for another two weeks then moved to a rehab facility for another three months to be in their professional care. Then slowly be processed to homecare and prepped to prepare for his job as a firefighter for another two-three months. Light duties while doing requalification’s if he can and move back to the job hopefully.
During homecare he would have his final surgery to fix the last of the bone grafts. Which should keep him from needing any other screws and rods, which would have been removed by that time while in rehab. And all the while, under full medical care and supervision.
Eddie gently put his son next to Buck to help both nap off the morning stress and silently called Athena to update her on everything. And asked her to make a run over to Buck’s for his electronics and cords. Also to make sure no unwelcome visitors came.
Then called in the family troops to go in and put in new locks on Bucks’ place and a security system with cameras, that Buck and he could be alerted on and be hooked into. As well as Athena.
Till it was all in, if one of them could stay there for security’s sake.
And, again, lots of yelling and screaming as his sister and her new lover, Chim, were arrested for breaking and entering, and criminal trespass. First by the arrival of Athena, then again by the system Eddie set up. And both were convicted of their crimes. Loss of their jobs, and time in jail of five years. With parole for another five years. And a permanent restraining order to keep away from Buck and the members of the Diaz Clan.
All the while, Chris and Buck met on FaceTime for reading time. Or just to talk. Had watch parties, and once a week came with a member of the family to visit his Bucky. Promising not to go to the pier till Buck could take him.

When Buck was transferred out of the rehab unit, it was to stay with Eddie and Chris. While Buck had been in rehab, he had undergone therapy and had insisted Eddie actually take the time off he was to have been granted by the city for his wife’s death and get his own. Along with Chris. And twice a week, the three of them would do family therapy together.
They were all down to monthly check ins on their own therapies by the time Buck got out of rehab and moved in with them. And now, he and Chris did their morning PT together after breakfast. And before Chris finished getting ready for school. Then Buck would go with whoever was to take him, and from there take an outing. Or go to the pool himself.
Life was much better this time versus his dream time. And he would not trade it for anything.
