The scent of Saffron and Revolution

Summary:

An 18-year-old is ripped from his reality by 2 prideful gods, has most of his memories suppressed, and is tossed into a chaotic, bloody world on the brink of revolution. Thankfully, they did grant him powers and a new life. Waking in chains, with a headache for the ages, he decides to take his life by the horns. This time around, he's motivated and unchainable.

Inspired by an RWBY CYOA.

WARNING: Dark themes, AU, OCs, aged-up characters, soulmates, slavery, and a darker setting than canon.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1 - I didn't ask for this!

Chapter Text

In a small house in the countryside, a man with tanned skin and brown hair sits on his couch. He runs a hand through his hair, relaxing as the sun sets outside. His blue eyes shut, and he quickly dozes off.

Blank eyes shoot open, an unformed, grey body floating in a black void. The figure looks at its hands, confused. 'Where am I?' it thinks, before a gold and purple being appears before it, glowing with power.

"We are the brother gods," they speak as one. The gold one 'steps' forward, golden antlers on its head, its body genderless and featureless. "I am the brother god of light. You have been chosen by us to fulfil a task. You see, we have seeded worlds before. Created realms! But our greatest creations betrayed us." The purple one steps forward, rams horns on its featureless, genderless body. "I am the brother god of darkness. We granted humans a second chance on a world called Remnant. A man named Ozma was our champion, our chosen hero to guide humanity in our absence. Sadly, a woman we cursed for insolence and leading the betrayal had grown strong in her evil and opposes him. We're sending you there to cause chaos and to ensure Ozma is...inspired and motivated to deal with her. Remnant is rife with differences from this...pathetic world. Monsters called Grimm, powers called Aura and Semblance, and even a material called dust."

The grey figure recognizes the names. 'Ozma...remnant...grimm...the brother gods...RWBY.

The golden one speaks again. "We are aware that a prophet in this world depicted events from our proud world, but as your prophets are few and far between, we doubt the...validity of the medium they used to depict our world. It would be wise not to depend on said knowledge. We're sending you there, in a new body. Your Soul will be put into the body of someone who was to be mentally...challenged, born in a vegetative state. Your soul will fix them. You will be merged with them when they become 18, as that's your current age. Until that point, you'll be comatose and unaware. I highly doubt your memories will survive fully intact."

'I didn't ask for this! Send me back!' It tries to speak, but finds it can't. 'You can't do this! I'm.../i'm...' It finds that its other memories are muddled, fogged, and distant.

The Brother of Darkness turns to look at the other god. "Brother, that's not what we agreed to-" "SILENCE! I am the stronger, wiser, better brother. My decision overrides yours." Darkness grumbles and sighs. "Very well, Brother, we'll send him that way. Now, for the basics of your... informing. Humans once had magic, but we took it from them."

'By killing them all, yes,' the grey figure, the human soul, thought to itself.

"We took that magic and imbued it into the earth, making dust, an energy source that fuels Remnant and its civilization. Dust can grow, albeit very, very slowly. Spent dust amasses within the world's biosphere and slowly re-accumulates."

'like pollution but less destructive. Neat'.

"On Remnant are also creatures grimm, monsters to keep humans in check, and to push their evolution. A subrace of humans, known as faunus, evolved due to the evolutionary strain on them."

The soul nods along, now sitting in the void, legs crossed.

Light speaks up. "Thank you, brother. Now, we won't send you without power. After all, you're no use to us if you die before you motivate Ozma. Your world may understand combat and war...but you, yourself, don't. You're a pathetic being who is, for lack of better terms, a pacifistic waste of skin." The soul looks at light, as if insulted, as Darkness facepalms. "What my brother means to say is, you're weak and uneducated in the art of fighting. For your weakness, you'll be given power. But not the knowledge of what that power is. You'll have to discover it yourself, through training. Your soul is surprisingly strong, despite your worthlessness in combat. Your merge will be even and equal, with the other whom you'll become. If you so choose...we can alter this deal." Darkness ignores how Light clenches his hands, 'face' staring at him as if enraged. Light slowly lets out a long breath. "Fine. I suppose I was...unfair. Soul, if you choose to have your memories suppressed, as well as applying that impression to the host body when you awaken, I...will allow you greater power."

The soul nods, agreeing. "Very well." Light places a finger to the soul's chest, and the being fades away. Darkness sighs."Brother, I hope you know I won't let you so easily overrule our  agreements." "I do not care what you think. If you want to make another deal with him on the way to his new life, fine! See if I care!" Light crosses his arms, genuinely pouting as Darkness vanishes into the void, leaving him alone. "...at least I'm not an asshole, unlike him."

Meanwhile, Darkness sighs to himself. "At least I'm no arse, like he is." He grabs the soul, stopping its path to Remnant. "Soul. My brother had broken our agreement on how to do this. We were supposed to let you choose your powers and how you'd enter Remnant. But as usual, he's being...difficult. I can't do much for you, besides grant you slightly more power, and maybe a stronger soul. I'm sorry I cannot offer more to you. You'll be sent to Remnant with little over half the strength Ozma originally had in life. While great, it's nothing compared to my mistake. Good luck. You'll need it."

Darkness lets go of the soul and leaves to rejoin his brother, unaware of a silent, faint, dark red otherness sliding into the soul. The soul's metaphysical heart beats once, before falling quiet again. The soul's memories leave it, slipping away like sand or water through cupped hands, and into the depths of itself. The otherness coils up inside it, and the soul hears only a gentle noise. Like a low, deep exhale. A single eye of red opens inside itself, silver bleeding out from the pupil, the iris mixing to be a half silver, half red flower pattern. (Silver inside, around the pupil, with red outside, bordering the whites of the eye.)

In a hospital, a woman with black hair and wolf ears atop her head lies in a bed surrounded by doctors. Her heartbeat fades as she holds her limp, still baby. A blond, cat-eared doctor places a hand on the baby's head, fingers glowing. After a minute, he sighs. "I'm sorry, Miss Saffron, but your baby is...well, vegetative. There's no brain activity." The woman bursts into tears, voice failing her as she sends a silent prayer to the gods, begging them to save her baby, even as she draws a final breath.

The baby, lying limp in the arms of its mother, suddenly bursts into choked, desperate cries. Its tiny eyes try to open, showing patterned, mixed silver and crimson. The doctor chokes back a gasp, hand back on the baby's head. "Impossible." The words slip from his lips. "It's...alive. Fully healthy and alive...My semblance has never been wrong...this is... this is unprecedented!"

A nurse scoops the baby up, wrapping it in a blanket, even as the doctor sputters out theories incoherently.

The baby's eyes focus on the nurse, and then slowly drift shut, its wailing coming to an end as its tired body gives in to sleep.
