Chapter Text
The old Bennett house creaked as Stiles Stilinski dragged his duffel bag up the porch steps. He'd been here before--brief visits, summers when his mom was alive--but this time felt different. This wasn't a casual trip. It was an escape.
"Stiles!" Bonnie's voice pulled him out of his thoughts. She leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, looking as unimpressed as ever. "You actually made it."
He smirked. "What, were you taking bets I'd get lost between Beacon Hills and Mystic Falls?"
"Considering your track record?" Bonnie arched an eyebrow.
"Fair," he admitted, lugging his bag inside.
Sheila Bennett appeared from the kitchen, her warm smile a welcome contrast to Bonnie's guarded one. "Look at you. Taller, skinnier, and still talking too fast." She gave him a quick hug, and for the first time in weeks, Stiles let himself relax.
"Yeah, well, I try to keep the Stilinski charm alive," he said, dropping his bag with a dramatic thud.
Sheila laughed softly, then glanced at Bonnie. "Dinner in an hour. Show him his room."
Bonnie led him upstairs, muttering something about "summer chaos incoming." Stiles grinned. At least somethings never changed.
Dinner smelled like rosemary chicken and something Stiles couldn't name but wanted desperately to eat. He was halfway through piling food on his plate when Sheila said it.
"You've grown into your name, Mieczyslaw."
The fork froze halfway to his mouth. The name landed like a stone in his chest. His father said it sometimes, carefully, like it was sacred. His mother used to whisper it when he couldn't sleep. But no one else--ever--got it right.
His throat went dry. "Uh...what?"
Bonnie frowned, glancing between them. "Wait, did you just--?"
"Slip of the tongue," Sheila said quickly, returning to her plate. But Stiles didn't miss the way her eyes flickered, like she'd said more than she meant.
He forced a laugh, shaking his head. "Yeah, uh, fun fact: no one ever calls me that. Except my dad. And--well. Used to be my mom." His chest tightened, but he hid it behind a crooked grin. "Everyone else just... sticks with Stiles. Easier."
Bonnie leaned forward, curiosity sharp in her gaze as she's heard his name before but was never able to pronounce it so, she didn't say anything about it, calling him mischief. "But why does it sound like you hate when people say it wrong?"
"Because it's mine," Stiles said before he could stop himself. The table went silent for a moment, then Sheila cleared her throat and changed the subject,
But the name lingered in the air, heavier than the smell of rosemary.
The next day, Mystic falls felt like a postcard town dipped in weird vibes. Too quiet, too pretty, too something. Bonnie dragged him to meet her friends at the Grill.
Caroline was all sunshine smiles until Stiles quipped, "Wow, you sound like a Disney Princess on expresso." Then she smiled less. Elena seemed nice enough, but her polite curiosity made Stiles itch. Damon, however, snorted into his drink and muttered, "Finally, someone who talks sense."
Stiles looks at him with a hint of intrigue and Deja vu. Damon reminds him of someone, but who. Then bonnie speaks. "Great," she muttered, glaring at Stiles.
"You've made a new friend. Worst possible choice."
Stiles only grinned. "What can I say? I attract trouble."
He wasn't wrong.
That evening, while wandering through town, Stiles collided with someone. Literally. His shoulder slammed into a tall figure, and he stumbled back.
"Whoa--sorry, dude, wasn't--" He froze.
The man wasn't just anyone. He had a presence that made the air feel charged, like a storm waiting to break. Blue eyes studied him with unsettling intensity, a half-smile tugging at his lips.
"No harm done," the man said smoothly, his voice rich and measured, like a cool wave settling over you.
The man tilted his head, gaze sharp. "Mieczyslaw."
The name rolled off his tongue perfectly, flawlessly, as if he'd been saying it his whole life.
Stiles stopped breathing. His heart stuttered painfully in his chest. No one. No one but his parents and aunt could say it right. And this stranger? This stranger made it sound like something ancient, like a truth.
He opened his mouth, but when he blinked, the man was gone.
That night, back at the Bennett house, Stiles lay awake, staring at the ceiling. His skin still prickled from the sound of his name.
The way the random man knew his name, saying it like it was normal when he hasn't seen or known anyone like him before. Just that he felt warm, almost... familiar.
He tried to laugh it off, muttering to himself, "Sure, Stiles, totally normal. Random hot stranger just...knows your impossible first name. Happens all the time."
But deep down, he knew nothing about this was normal. (And come on, when has anything normal ever happened to him.)
Somewhere in the shadows of Mystic Falls, Klaus Mikaelson smirked to himself.
At last, he'd found the boy whose bloodline was written in his fate.
