Work Text:
Jordan hadn’t meant to lose Marie at the party, but it was so crowded and most of the supes were going crazy. They had just spent the summer with their parents, realizing their powers weren’t some gift from god, but were a choice made for them. Some kids didn’t care as much, but it didn’t take an idiot to realize some kids didn’t like how they had ended up.
“You good?” Maverick asked them.
“Hey man,” they said with a smile as they held out their fist for a bump where they assumed his hand would be.
“Honestly shocked to see you here, man,” Maverick told them. “Definitely not your scene for the last year or so,” Maverick pointed out. After their first encounter with Marie, they buried themselves in training and studying. They had developed plans for Cate, Andre, and Luke to improve their powers. When they realized Sam was a target of the admin, they worked with Cate to manipulate the situation to protect him. And when they weren’t doing that, they were messaging Marie, whom they still could not find.
“I came with someone,” they said, continuing to look around.
“The Angel of Godolkin, right?” Maverick asked. They froze and stared at their former roommate.
“How did you-?”
“Cate literally posted on her story a picture of her in your room,” Maverick told them.
“Oh,” they said, realizing that Maverick probably recognized their sheets.
“I think she wasn’t far from the bonfire, but Rufus was eyeing her,” Maverick warned. And that was enough to send Jordan off like a shot.
They spotted her quickly enough; the sparkly shirt reflected the flames well, and they couldn’t help the smug feeling at seeing her in their jacket. Upon closer inspection, she looked uncomfortable, surrounded by people. However, one asshole junior-aged sophomore was leaning way too close to her, and Jordan could see the power-induced lethargy setting in as Rufus tried to put a hand on her.
They growled as they walked straight up to the douch who had tried the same thing on Cate at the beginning of their freshman year. Jordan was happy to be able to do this again. Transferring the drink in their hand to the other, they punched him directly in the face, and when that didn’t put him down, they switched to their fem form and directed an energy blast right at his dick.
“Jordan,” Marie breathed out.
“He’s like a walking roofie, trust me, stay away,” Jordan told her, handing her the drink that had actually taken them away from her in the first place.
“Thank you,” she said. Then she glanced down at Rufus, who was still writhing. She passed the drink back to them before bending down and putting her hand near his crotch and focusing, before standing back up to take her drink as Jordan led her away.
“Enjoying your fan club?” Jordan asked once they were far enough away from those who had simply watched as Rufus started to attempt an assault on a freshman.
“No,” Marie said with a frown. “I thought being a hero was about helping people, not clout,” she pouted. Jordan couldn’t help but grin at her disgruntled look. It was adorable how she saw the world.
“It’s stupid, but that’s the world we live in,” they said with a sigh. They took a sip of the shitty whiskey they managed to find at the bar. “How’s the drink?”
“Not bad, what is it?” She asked them.
“Tequila and some soda, I figured it was best for you to taste it a little,” Jordan told her. “What did you do to him when you handed me the drink back there?” They asked after another sip of their shitty drink. Marie leaned up to whisper in their ear.
“I may have cut off the blood vessels to his dick,” Jordan’s mouth fell open in shock.
“You can do that?”
“We’ll see in a few days if it falls off.”
“I may be in love with you,” they said without thinking. She stared at them in shock at their statement. “I mean, Rufus is awful, he tried to assault Cate our freshman year, and he’s been held back so he’s still a sophomore, but he’s a massive douchecanoe.”
“Well, hopefully I took care of that,” she told them. They held their cup up to cheers her.
“May it whither and die,”
“May it whither and die,” she repeated with a smile as they both threw back the last of their drink.
“Come dance with me,” they said, feeling bold. They pulled her back towards the crowd of people who were dancing. Well, dancing was a strong word; most of them were grinding or having vertical sex.
“Umm,” Marie paused as she took in the crowd.
“Don’t worry about them,” Jordan told her as they put her arms around their neck and shifted to their masculine form. “Here, on my waist,” they told her, and felt the warmth of her hands settle just above their hips.
“Why’d you switch?” She asked after a minute.
“Because I felt like it,” they instantly responded. She shrank back. “But also, people move out of my way a bit more when I’m in this form, and it’s just easier,” they told her more gently.
“Maybe, but I like them both, because you’re you,” she said after another minute of gentle swaying. They stayed like that, just staring at each other, listening to the music, and drifting closer to each other.
“Marie, I-”
“Admin!” Someone shouted, and they were plunged into darkness and chaos as everyone scattered.
“Shit,” she muttered. Jordan kept a tight grip on her as they started to navigate out of the dark, dense forest. “I can’t get caught,” she whispered fearfully. They knew how worried she was about being sent to Elmira, and they also knew that her scholarship stated any marks on her academic record would result in expulsion.
“You won’t,” Jordan assured her. They eventually saw the glow from some of the buildings in the distance through the trees. They gently pulled her through the trees towards campus. Unfortunately, they ended up on the side of campus closer to their dorm than to hers. “We can’t risk trying to get back into the freshman dorms,” they told her, pulling her towards the upperclassmen dorms. Their curfew was different than the freshman, so it was less suspicious to see people going in there.
“What about everyone else?” She asked them, scared for their friends.
“They’ll be ok,” they assured her. “Luke and Andre have Cate, and she can compel anyone who finds them. I also have a feeling that Emma can pull her small trick and disappear almost as well as my old roommate, Maverick.” She nodded her head as they crept quietly through the upperclassmen dorms to Jordan’s room. They entered quickly and closed and locked the door behind them with a sigh of relief.
Then they realized that Marie and they were now forced to spend the night together. Not quite how they wanted this to go.
“Ok, Emma just texted that she made it to safety in our building but is stuck on a different floor with a couple of other kids,” Marie said with a sigh. They checked their messages and saw the all clear from Luke, as well as a message from Cate:
Future Seven Manager:
Have fun :P
Resident Asshole:
Shut up
They glanced over at Marie, who was probably getting messages from Cate as well.
“Cate?” They asked as Marie seemed to type furiously back with a blush on her cheeks.
“Yeah,” she said, looking slightly embarrassed. They shook their heads and went to pull out some extra boxers and a large t-shirt for her to wear to sleep in.
“We’re stuck in here until tomorrow if you don’t want to risk getting caught, so here are some clothes. I can take the couch,” they offered as they turned towards the conveniently located sink in their room so they could brush the taste of shitty whiskey out of their mouth.
“Maybe I can go return this jacket to Cate at least,” Marie offered, stepping towards the door. They quickly spat out their toothpaste.
“It’s actually my jacket,” they told her.
“Really?” She asked.
“Yeah, not sure when Cate stole it, but it looked good on you, so I didn’t want to say anything,” they said sheepishly.
“Well, since I’ve already worn some of your clothes today, what’s a few more?” Marie said after a moment and turned to grab the clothes Jordan had set out for her. They turned their back to give her privacy to change and did the same themselves. When they turned around, Marie was sitting on the couch, with a blush on her cheeks and looking at her phone. They smirked as they realized she may have caught more of a show than she intended.
“I have some makeup remover and an extra toothbrush,” they offered her.
“Thanks,” she said, almost too brightly, and jumped up to go to their sink, where the extra toiletries were.
Jordan went to the couch and couldn’t resist looking at the phone she had left unlocked and open to her messages. Front and center was a message from Emma.
Little Cricket:
Get some!!!
Marie:
Please stop, they’re being nice
Little Cricket:
If by nice u mean they stared at u all nite and danced with u like they wanted to sex u up
Marie:
I really can’t with you
Little Cricket:
Just do what I would do!!
Marie:
I’d really rather not
Glad you’re safe!
Little Cricket:
I expect details in the AM!!
DON’T IGNORE ME!!!
NITE!!
Jordan quickly turned the phone over as they heard the sink shut off and smiled to themselves. Looks like they needed to talk to Emma tomorrow. They picked up her phone and grabbed a spare charger to plug it in, as well as grabbed a pillow and an extra blanket their mom had insisted on putting in the dorm for them.
“I’ll take the couch, it’s the least I can do,” Marie offered.
“No, no,”
“Jordan, seriously,”
“Marie,”
“Jordan,”
“Marie,”
“Jordan,” she said, laughing.
“Marie,” they said seriously, but still smiled at her.
“We could share,” she finally offered after glancing at the bed. “I’m used to a twin, and I really don’t kick or-,”
“Are you sure? I sometimes switch in the middle of the night,” They asked her.
“Why would that matter? If you’re ok with it, so am I,” she offered. They knew she probably didn’t understand the offer she was giving them, but it meant a lot. Usually, people only shared a bed with Jordan when they were getting sex in exchange, but no one wanted to stick around in case they changed while asleep. It had freaked Maverick out the first few weeks of living together when they switched in their sleep, and they still couldn’t rest at all at their parents’ house for fear of switching before their parents woke them up.
“Ok,” they told her, gathering the pillow and blanket and bringing them to the bed. They decided to stay in their male form as they pulled back the sheets for both of them and got in. “I plugged your phone in,” they said after a minute.
“I forgot you have to do that,” she said with a chuckle. They smiled at her words. She was a breath of fresh air after the last year. Even though meeting her had opened their eyes to the way the world actually worked, they were grateful for it. They reached over and turned out the lights, plunging them into darkness, before their night light in the corner kicked on to give a soft glow that wouldn’t disturb their sleep.
“Hey Jordan?” She asked after a minute.
“Yeah, freshman,” they answered, hoping the nickname would ease the tension that he clogged the air the second the light was turned off. They swore they could feel her smile.
“Thanks for tonight,” she whispered. “My first real party was nice, even if we almost got caught,” she whispered, turning over.
“Always,” they whispered, closing their eyes and doing their best to go to sleep.
