The first time Arthur brings up the idea is when Oscar signs the McLaren contract.
“Oh my god you've done it!” Arthur's bright grin is a little grainy through FaceTime but It makes Oscar smile back all the same.
They're on the phone, Oscar in his apartment in England, Arthur over in Monaco. Oscar doesn't usually get excited about things, but it'd been difficult to wait until he got home to call his boyfriend to share the big news.
Formula fucking 1. Fuck yeah he’s done it.
“It's just a contract, don't get too excited.” Oscar laughs, “I might shunt it into the wall on the formation lap and be kicked out in two races.” he jokes.
Arthur doesn't take the bait, “You'll be winning championships in no time, just you wait. Max Verstappen doesn't know what's coming for him.”
Oscar snorts, “As if, mate. Your brother still needs to win a championship last I checked, shouldn't you be rooting for him?”
“Well, mate” Oscar winces, the Aussie urge to insert mate into every sentence is not one his boyfriend appreciates. “If you take my last name, it will be a Leclerc winning either way.”
Oscar blinks.
The smile slowly fades off of Arthur's face as he realises what he’s said.
Both of their faces blaze red.
“Trying to tie me down already, Leclerc?” Oscar tries to tease, but his voice comes out choked.
“Only so there will be three Leclerc’s on the Formula one grid.” Arthur shoots back with a grin.

The next time it comes up is in May of 2024, when Charles replies to Oscar’s joke about trying to find any monegasque in his ancestry with a simple ‘I can adopt you if needed’.
Oscar types out several joking replies about step-sibling relationships that he wishes he could post, but instead sends straight to Arthur along with a screenshot of the tweets. He wishes he could send them to Charles too, but alas, the perils of secret relationships with your coworkers brother.
Arthur is not so amused.

It's a little funny, Oscar does a little exhale-laugh when he sees the post on twitter, and then moves on with his life.

Arthur ends up proposing to Oscar the following January, not even a year later.
They're in Italy, staying in a secluded villa on a private beach for the week as an early celebration for their fourth anniversary. It's a nice week trip, lazy mornings and late nights, no one but each other and the staff that make themselves as scarce as possible. A getaway before they both have Sim racing and factory days for their respective racing series’ and family events to attend, a week to themselves.
One night, when the two of them are laying shoulder to shoulder on the pool lounge out on the porch, admiring the stars with the sound of the ocean being the only noise between them, Arthur turns to Oscar with wide eyes.
“You know, Lorenzo and Charlotte have started planning their wedding.” He whispers, tracing patterns on Oscar’s bare chest.
Oscar hums, “that's nice.”
“We should have a wedding, too.”
It takes Oscar a moment to register the shake in his boyfriend's voice, the measured breathing, the way he's coiled tight like a spring.
Oscar flips over onto his stomach and props himself up on his arms, looking down at Arthur, “You want to get married? Now?”
Arthur shrugs in the perfect picture of feigned nonchalance, “Why not?”
Oscar raises an eyebrow, “Some insane fan will find our names on the registry in like five minutes.”
“So? A small price to pay to marry the love of my life.” Arthur grins, leaning up to kiss Oscar sweetly. Oscar chases him as he lays back down, clinking their foreheads together, “You’re such a kiss ass.” He murmurs fondly.

Oscar thinks Arthur is joking until he brings up the recent legalisation of gay marriage in Monaco the next morning. He asks how soon Oscar would sign the papers.
“I thought you wanted a wedding?”
“Fuck no. That was just my brilliant segue” Arthur smirks.
Oscar rolls his eyes, but chuckles, “Figures. You're not the wedding type.”
“Are you?”
“Eh, not really.”
“Good. We’ll drive back to Monaco a day early and elope.”
“Sounds like a plan.”

It's not until they are literally at the church in Monaco, witnesses present, when Arthur springs it on him.
Arthur is speaking to the priest in French, organising something or other. Oscar is standing around like a child during his own bloody elopement when his boyfriend turns to him and asks;
“You will take the Leclerc family name, correct?” Like it's obvious. It's not. It's out of fucking nowhere.
Oscar just gapes at him, “What? No! We never discussed this.” he hisses. Sure they'd joked about it plenty of times over their almost four year relationship, but always in passing. There was no formal discussion, no time to ruminate over this, no communication whatsoever.
“What? Why not?” Arthur tilts his head, eyes wide and confused like a puppy.
Oscar wants to bitchslap his stupid pretty boyfriend right in his stupidly pretty face.
“Why would I? What archaic gender roles are you assigned to our relationship? Why aren't you taking the Piastri name, Leclerc?” He snarls.
The priest opens his mouth like he wants to interject, but thinks better of it. Smart man.
Arthur scrunches his nose, “No! To both questions. I just thought….? It would be funny….?” He says, sheepishly.
Oscar seethes, is this idiot serious? He thought Oscar would be happy changing his last name because it would be funny?
Arthur thought Oscar would be swayed by the utter chaos of having F1 change his name on everything with no explanation? Arthur thought he'd be tempted by the idea of Crofty stumbling over what to call Oscar during a race start and stumbling over his words? He thought Oscar would revel in the dream of what Charles’ face would look like when he learned the truth? Arthur thought he'd laugh while imagining all the confused and alarmed social media posts about Charles actually adopting him?
“Fine. Oscar Leclerc. Why not, I guess.”
When Oscar signs his name on the final form with a flourish, Arthur grabs his face with both hands and pulls him into a kiss so hard both their lips bruise.

This is a formal notice that my partner and I decided to spontaneously get married this past weekend. I apologise for the late and sudden notice, I know this is unlike me and will cause issues for the team, especially considering that I've decided to take his last name.
I am aware there is precedent to keep using my "maiden" name in motorsport regardless of this change, but (again, I know this will sound weird coming from me) I think it would be really, really funny if I just sprung this on the F1 world out of nowhere.
This is not me seeking PR or team approval. My manager has already pulled the necessary forms and determined who I need to contact to get this change into effect by the third race of next season. I just felt bad and wanted to let you know.
My husband is Arthur Leclerc, by the way. Forgot to mention that one. You can see where the humour comes from. No one is aware of our relationship except the two of us just yet so I'd appreciate it if anyone who reads this keeps it to themselves.

CROFT: Oscar Piastri’s name seems to have changed to Oscar Leclerc in our systems, I’m not quite sure why. That ‘L-E-O’ next to the Mclaren swoosh on the timing tower is in fact reference to ‘Oscar Leclerc’, not sure what’s gone wrong there but hopefully that will be sorted out soon. Nicholas Todt, Charles’ manager, comes running up to him the second he gets out of the car, face wrought with nerves.
Charles looks around and realises every mechanic in the Ferrari garage is looking at him like he might snap.
“What happened?”
“I think you should go speak to Oscar. I’ll keep your phone for now.”
Oscar? Charles scrunches his eyebrows in confusion, but nods. Why would something to do with Oscar cause him to lose it?
Charles gets changed and walks out and down to the Mclaren hospitality, catching strange looks and whispers on the way there.
There’s a sign up in the paddock with the FP1 results. He briefly scans his eyes over it, feeling that brief surge of pride as he sees his name in third. It’s an oddly long amount of time before his eyes land on Oscar all the way down in 15th. That position is surprising, but not as much as the distinct lack of ‘Piastri’.
Oscar Leclerc.
Charles blinks, reads it again. It doesn’t change.
Huh.

“Oscar, just the person I was looking for.”
Oscar startles, spinning around to see Charles Leclerc leaning in the doorway, one eyebrow raised. Fuck. He has no idea where Arthur is, Oscar had hoped his boyfr—husband could deal with this conversation, but alas.
“Can you explain to me why you’re Oscar Leclerc on the timesheets? I thought it might be a mistake, but my team would not act so weird if that was the case.”
Oscar relaxes when he feels an arm settle over his shoulder, the familiar smell and presence of Arthur Leclerc settling next to him. Thank god for his husbands timing.
Charles face melts into confusion, eyes flicking to search his brother’s face for an answer. Oscar can see the questions in his gaze, why is my brother here in Japan without me knowing? is painted all over his face.
“Not a mistake, Cha.” Arthur laughs, placing a loudly exaggerated kiss on Oscar’s cheek. Oscar feels himself going red. “Is it not right for my husband to take my last name?”
Charles bluescreens, eyes distant, mouth open in shock.
Oscar and Arthur glance at each other, and then promptly burst into giggles.
