Teddy uris had always been my best friend and i don’t think it would’ve ever change , even if it had time to .

Teddy uris was my best friend when ‘ teddy urine sucks balls ‘ was written on his locker .

Teddy uris was my best friend when we fought about Matty Clement’s dissapearance .

Teddy uris was my best friend when ‘ loony ‘ Lilly Bainbridge told us she heard Matty’s voice in the pipes .

Teddy uris was my best friend when he saw his lampshade turn into human skin .

Teddy uris was my best friend when we investigated Matty’s dissapearance at the library .

Teddy uris was my best friend when Veronica Grogan took us to that theatre .

Teddy uris was my best friend until he wasn’t .

and there was nothing i could’ve done to save him , because i knew that soon it would be my turn , so i’ll try to remember one last time .

Teddy uris was a loser because of his religion , jews weren’t exactly considered normal and acceptable in the 60s , of course getting bullied would be a consequence for practicing such religion , it didn’t take long until some hateful shit was written on his locker , not that anything was wrong with being Jewish , being different was what was wrong , but not to me , i liked teddy for him , his difference and how he could somehow put up with my bullshit .

Teddy always listened to my alien theories when no one else would , even thought sometimes i wish we could’ve talked about something else , something that he wanted to talk about . i’m not so sure that teddy really cared about my alien theories , although he had answers to every single one of them , scientific answers , the only ‘ logical ‘ ones because no one was stupid enough to believe in aliens except me apparently , teddy was smart and i knew that , i wish i was as smart as him , maybe i could’ve told him .

Teddy was always right , and i knew i was wrong , i just didn’t want to accept it , I hated saying that Matty was dead , telling Teddy that it didn’t matter anymore as he was already gone , everyone was convinced he was a goner including me but he oh so wanted to believe that he had just ran away and that someday he’d comeback to prove that he was fine , he latched onto that tiny bit of hope left inside of him , but even he knew it and it was slowly destroying him . he had pointed out our messed up actions and how we were complete assholes , and now i understand him , Matty’s mom had given us candy just so we’d go to his birthday party and at least pretend we knew why we were there , the least we could’ve done was go , like normal human beings with the ability of feeling sympathy would , or even just pity , I know teddy would’ve gone if he had the chance to , i wouldn’t have , and that’s why we didn’t go . Simply because i was being a stubborn little bitch , and now i regret it , i regret it so much , the tears that i had shed before that stupid movie turned on weren’t fake , it’s just that in that moment , i had realized once teddy pointed it out again , that he was right , and now i knew .

it wasn’t that Matty was boring to hangout with , it’s just that he was considered weird and we didn’t want our reputation to be worst than it already was , we were already getting bullied , God knows how much worse it could’ve had gotten if we publicly hung out with the poor kid . But does it really matter anymore ? Matty is gone , teddy is gone and soon i’ll be gone , who cares about stupid reputation .

the only thing that matters is the fact that we could’ve had been friends , and now we’ll never be , never .

that day was just supposed to be me and teddy hanging out , just us two , i don’t hate Lilly because she ruined it , but it’s kind of her fault that we’re gonna die , me and teddy of course , except teddy’s already dead .

we were talking just like always and i HAD to bring up aliens because of course a conversation without bringing up aliens is impossible to achieve for me .

“ there HAS to be a reason why men have nipples , think about it ! “

“ maybe it’s like our tails and gills , we just evolved out of it “

“ OR .. it’s nature’s way of telling us that we’re the second option to feed our babies , should anything happen to women , like aliens taking them back to their world , when it does happen , me and you are gonna be breastfeeding like crazy ! “

i remember this conversation like it was yesterday , because it was yesterday , although it was so stupid , I wish it had a chance to continue , but no , because ‘ loony ‘ Lilly Bainbridge HAD to tell us about her encounter with Matty’s voice singing in the pipes , and then stretching his fingers just to wave hello to her ! Crazy right ? well now i think she actually did see that , and maybe she wasn’t all that ‘ loony ‘ because i did see matty clements ( who is supposedly missing ) throw a giant mutant baby through a theater screen , and it’s probably what’s gonna end my life , kind of a dumb AND cool way to die if you think about it .. at that time it was kind of hard to believe .

the night after ‘ loony ‘ Lilly Bainbridge told us about what she saw , teddy himself encountered a similar situation , except for the fact that it wasn’t Matty or a voice in that case , he had told us that his lamp kept turning off and on , until the third time , when he turned it on , the lampshade was made out of human skin , although it seems like he was lying , i know when teddy is lying and he wasn’t lying , not at that time , he was vomiting in a bucket , that’s how bad it was to him .. I felt bad for him because I knew that I hadn’t seen anything like he did ( until now ) , it should’ve had been me seeing it , getting scared and vomiting .. because teddy didn’t deserve it , he was a better person than i ever was .

my parents had forced me to bring my little sister susie with me when going out to the library with Lilly and teddy because they couldn’t find a sitter for her , so it was my job to keep her safe , and i failed like I always do . Susie kept annoying teddy , telling him how she ‘ could write in cursive ‘ and how she ‘ had the best hand writing in her class ‘ Teddy obviously found it annoying as he kept telling me to shut her up , and shut her up i did .

“ Hey suz , i need someone with the best hand writing to find me a book called .. ‘ bucket .. full of muffins ‘ .. “

me and my sister had one thing in common , we both liked teddy , except i liked teddy way more than she ever did , but that’s not the point , once Susie stopped bothering us , Lilly had found the news about matty going missing and read it out loud , it said something about the police questioning a 12 year old and her dad , apparently both teddy and lilly knew who , but not me .

Veronica grogan was the girl’s name , she had ( totally ) respectfully told us to fuck off because the police had already came by multiple times to find reasons to take away her father and the girl was honestly so done with all this bullshit , we were about to leave until I , Philip malkin , decided to open my mouth , and for once something helpful had came out of it because Veronica immediately turned around to ask me what the actual fuck i had just said , now i regret saying it because maybe teddy would still be alive , with the helpful information i had given the girl , she had decided to take us to the theatre where matty was last seen and where we would eventually meet our demise , claiming that she possibly knew the song , and that it would somehow help us ?? Veronica would make sure the movie plays while Susie , Lilly , Teddy and i would watch , and watch we did , not before crying our eyes out and blaming ourselves for matty’s dissapearance of course , let’s not not forget about that . As soon as the movie started playing , Lilly had pointed out that the song in the movie is the one that she had heard matty singing in the pipes , what we never expected was for matty to BE in the movie , we were all confused and just started yelling at him , begging him to somehow crawl out of the screen , but instead we got a giant fucking mutant baby .

I was doing my best to run away while trying to get susie to safety , crawling over the seats and hoping to get out , I had heard teddy screaming and i made the mistake of glancing behind me , there he was , teddy , being flung around and bit into , blood had spilled , my best friend’s blood , and i was there to see it happen , I ran but it was useless , I had seen Lilly duck under the seats and onto floor , I noticed susie had done the same thing once I heard it flying towards me , it reminded me of the turtle kid from school , and how i had told teddy to “ duck and cover “ .. that didn’t sound like a bad idea right now but it was already too late , i was tackled onto the ground and i saw it , this thing , staring down at me , I felt a sharp stab on my side , it was making it painful on purpose , i wonder how it felt for Teddy , as his screams had quickly quieted down , quicker than mine did , it made me sick .

“ yeah .. wait what ? “

“ Ronnie , you’re sweet on her , i know the signs “

Will didn’t believe rich at first when he said that, because he didn’t like ronnie like that, at least he believed he didn’t. although when he had laid his hand on hers that night, that’s when he started catching feelings. That whole night was a fever dream, with ghosts chasing them, taking pictures while trying not to die.. then breaking into school at night and finding out one of the pictures contained a creepy looking clown, that was too much to process for will.

after lilly and ronnie had gone home, rich insisted that will stayed at his house so it’d be ‘safer’ .. or maybe rich just didn’t want to admit that he was too scared to stay alone, either way will didn’t mind, he wasn’t too fond of the idea of being alone either, so he accepted.

rich’s parents were asleep by then, and somehow trusted their kid to be out this late ?? they had quietly made their way up to rich’s room, although will had taken the time to look around, rich’s house was nice, it’s a place will would definitely not mind staying in, especially if rich came with it. the click of the door behind them woke will up from his ‘daydreaming’.

“ what a night .. “ rich mutters examining his own room, looking for a place where will could sleep, he ended up choosing his own bed, he didn’t really care as the bed was big enough for two people.

“ yeah .. “ will says, looking around the room, until his gaze lands back on rich. “ do you think maybe we should’ve had believed them a little bit earlier ? “

rich shrugs casually and quickly says “ maybe but it’s already over, no turning back. “ he plops down on the bed and stifles a yawn “ i’m tired , you ?? “ rich looks expectantly at will, waiting for an answer

“ yeah .. “ will just awkwardly stands there.

“ well then what are you waiting for ? “ rich responds, yawning a second time.

will chuckles nervously “ right right .. “

rich ends up pulling will by the arm just to get him on the bed, his hand on will makes will’s chest unusually warm.

“ you know, i’m still upset we didn’t get to finish our food earlier, i mean that looked sooo good, especially my milkshake, still don’t understand how you manage to like strawberry.. “

“ i’m just not a fan of chocolate, plus you got it all over your face “ will rolls his eyes “ and yeah that did look good, maybe we can go back tomorrow and forget about what happened tonight ? “

rich stays silent for a solid minute “ yeah, that’d be nice, you think my milkshake’s gonna come alive and drown me to death ? “

“ probably, i mean i don’t know what’s to believe after what just happened..” will looks outside the window, almost excepting something to come out and scare him to death

“ woah come on, don’t take it seriously, my milkshake won’t try to drown me ! well i think, but anyway it doesn’t matter anymore, because, we’ve got something else to talk about ! “ rich says excitedly “ i’m sure you’ll like the topic .. “

will looks up “ is it about the astronaut that peed himself when on the moon or just space related ?? “ he responds, chuckling.

“ nope, none of that, it’s about your little crush on Ronnie man, we’ve got to talk about that ! “ rich laughs.

“ i already told you, i don’t like Ronnie.. i think. “ will looks back down

“ well i think you do, like i said, you’re sweet on her.. you totally like her !! “

will stays silent at his words, they lay next to each other, staring at the ceiling.

“ maybe you’re right “ will speaks up.

“ so you do like her ? I knew it ! “ rich turns his head to look at will. “ i told you i knew the signs “

“ yeah , yeah whatever man, i’m going to sleep “ will turned to his side, pretending to be annoyed but the smile in his voice betrayed him.

“ alright then , goodnight will ! “ rich exclaims, closing his eyes.

“ night .”

it was silent, the only sound in the room was the steadied breathing, coming from both of their bodies, the light of the sun slowly making it’s way through the window, which ended up waking will up.

will blinks a couple times, getting used to the light, until his eyes are met with rich, who was sleeping, will just stared, he didn’t want to wake him up, he looked so peaceful, will wondered what he was dreaming about, he reaches out and gently pushes the hair out of rich’s face, which causes rich to stir, will quickly pulls his hand away as rich slowly opens his eyes.

“ morning .. “ rich says, still half asleep.

will blinks “ morning “ he says a little too casually, looking away .. but when he looked back, rich was smiling at him, will liked his smile. god, it was gonna be a long day .. -…

Richie has always been curious, he was curious about school, curious about eddie, he was curious about the child murdering clown living in the sewers.. but there was something that he had never been curious about, his own mother.

He discovered the existence of 'the black spot' while looking through Ben's backpack at the quarry, sure he had called him a nerd because of it, but it doesn't mean he wasn't interested in learning about it, Ben had told him it took place in 62' and that's what got Richie curious. his one and only thought being 'my mother was alive during 62'.. maybe she can tell me a thing or two about it..' and now that he looks back, maybe he shouldn't have asked..

Richie had gone home that day, ready to ask his mom the big question, margaret was in the kitchen, making food until Richie disturbed her with a question she wished he had never asked.

" do you know about the black spot? The building that took fire in 62'??"

she froze, literally, she didn't even look at Richie but he knew he had messed up.

" mom? what's wrong? "

" no .. nothing sweetie .. it's just you shouldn't ask about things like that, it was just a tragic accident, you .. go to your room rich..- richie.. "

Richie raises an eyebrow, why would she panic after calling him rich?

of course Richie didn't want to upset her any further, so go to his room he did, he layed on his bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying the way his mother froze after the mention of 'the black spot' sure it had burnt down, but giving how these days no adult would react like that when a bar full of people of color burnt down, or even care that much, he doubted that they would in the 60s.

maybe it reminds her of something ?

the next day Richie woke up, he crept down the stairs and saw that his mother wasn't there, probably gone to get groceries, Richie looked away and stared at his parents room, the door wide open, practically inviting him to enter and investigate his mother's past, if anything was in there of course, Richie couldn't say no to an offer like that, so he entered and started searching the whole room, under the bed, in the closet, in the drawers..

and then when he opened the last one, there was something Richie had never expected to find, because why would his mother own that? he picked it up and looked at it closely..

an eyepatch, it looked like it belonged to a pirate! Richie could barely believe this would be in his mom's room, but it looked cool, so Richie did the only reasonable thing to do when one finds a cool and silly looking eyepatch, he tried it on.

" Rich..? "

he slowly turned around, the eyepatch still on his face, he faced his own mother, frozen, and then saw.. tears running down her cheeks?

" mom ? mom what's wrong ? "

Richie says, quickly walking up to her with a worried expression.

" don't touch that, give it to me "

Margaret commanded, but Richie wouldn't budge.

" why do you have this ? are you planning on joining me for halloween or..? "

Richie jokes, hoping to lighten the mood, but it does the exact opposite, as more tears run down on Margie's cheeks

Margaret remembered it all, the way rich had died trying to save her, the way Rich's last words were meant for her and her only, the way he coughed until he didn't anymore, The way his lifeless eyes looked down at the ground instead of shining and looking up at the paper airplane he had tried to get into Main Street again, the way he would never, ever look again.

Marge blamed herself, of course she did, back then she kept telling herself that she should've been the dead one and not him, fuck the 'knight' bullshit, she didn't want him dead, but now he was, and he wasn't gonna come back.

She took a moment to take a good look at Richie's face, if she could be honest, he really looked like him, richie had always reminded her of rich, and she couldn't help but let the words slip out of her mouth before she could stop them.

" you look just like him .. "

she whispers, which causes richie's confusion.

" what ..? "

...

Now richie was a successful comedian, loved by millions of people, he was happy! or so he thought he was, he felt like something was missing..

he remembered the promise he had kept to his mom, that he'd never make the same 'mistake' as her and let a loved one die for him.

He was so sure he could keep it, because richie didn't remember at first, not until that call.

guess richie couldn't keep that promise.

"did loony lilly bainbridge just check us out?"

did teddy find Lilly physically apealling ?

the answer is, well ofcourse he did, why wouldn't he?

although he never told anyone, except Phil, he insisted that what teddy was feeling wasn't love, that it wasn't  crush and that he shouldn't even like someone like ' loony lilly bainbridge ' but teddy never said anything about falling in love with her, he had simply said that she was pretty, he didn't understand why Phil had reacted like that because lilly obviously wasn't ' loony '.. she was simply mourning her father's death, someone she deeply cared about, and that's normal, that's something that teddy could understand, but apparently others couldn't. They made her life worst than it already was and she didn't deserve that, she didn't nothing wrong and teddy will take this thought to the grave no matter what, of course it was just a thought because teddy wasn't actually doing anything to help her, in fact he hadn't never talked to her before, although he wish he did, but she was just someone he saw in the hallway while passing by, he doubted that Lilly actually knew who he was, other than ' teddy urine ' and ' queer kid ' he wasn't called anything other than that, Teddy was neither of those, and it was only because he was abnormally shorter than boys his age. But that didn't matter because right now, he was gonna ride around town on his bike with Phil, his best friend.

" you gotta believe it, dude ! There's no way they don't have aliens hidden in there, bet they're planning some kind of world domination.. "

he didn't know why he had accepted to go out, it was heavily raining, and if teddy could be honest, he wasn't really listening to a single thing that Phil was saying, he was thinking about someone..

" hello ? earth to teddy ?? "

those words snap teddy out of his daydreaming..

" lilly ? What?? Oh uh yeah aliens and whatever.. "

Phil glares then teddy, his face unreadable, he sighs.

" Really man?? I told you to give it up!! You're gonna get bullied even more than you already are! And that says a lot.. plus you're always thinking about her! It's always ' Lilly this '.. ' lilly that '.. omg it's lilly fucking Bainbridge !! Snap out of it man! Can you stop looking at her and look at me?? maybe listen to what i'm saying for once ?? "

Teddy froze, getting off of his bike, he had never seen Phil this upset before.

" Phil, what are you - "

" NO ! I can't with you anymore teddy! You're ruining our friendship and for what? So you can swap spit with some stupid girl?? "

' ruining our friendship ?? how was liking someone ruining our friendship? ' teddy thought.

" lilly's not stupid! It's not my fault you don't like girls! "

the words came quickly, too quickly, teddy had to even realized what he had just said, all he could see wasn't phil's expression switch from anger and frustration to hurt and pure shock.

"no.. wait -"

but it didn't matter what teddy said, because it was already too late, Phil was already gone, leaving teddy soaking wet under the rain.

...

The next day Teddy walked alone in the hallway which was something he had never experienced before since he usually had a taller boy walking next to him, tapping his mouth off about ridiculous things like aliens, he hated this feeling, feeling vulnerable, feeling.. alone.

If his bullies saw him right now, he'd be screwed, they would have definitely beat the shot out of him and call him names-

' oof - ! '

teddy stumbles to the ground, a couple of books falling on top of him followed with a few ' ouches ' here and there.

"oh my god, i'm so sorry .."

Teddy felt hands grabbing his shoulders, helping him up, it was a girls voice and it sounded awfully like..

"are you okay? Are you hurt?? "

Teddy looked up and there she was.

Lilly Bainbridge.

Teddy couldn't help but stare, she was finally looking at him, acknowledged him for the first time, maybe ..

"What? Do i have something on my face?? "

she asked in a worried tone, letting go off teddy and touching her face, and suddenly teddy could speak again.

"NO - no.. you're fine, i mean there's nothing on your face .."

he mumble the last part, bending over to help her pick up the school books that had unfortunately also fallen on the floor, well, mostly on teddy actually, he felt lilly's gaze on the back of his neck while licking the books up, it has a tingly feeling, which made teddy quickly get up and hand her the books, their fingers had brushed and teddy felt his face grow warm, lilly looked up and offered him a small, almost unnoticeable smile, but teddy saw it, and he loved it.

" i'm Lilly Bainbridge "

'I know ' teddy thought, but he didn't want to come out as a creep or make her think he also knew her as ' loony lilly Bainbridge ' like everyone else, so he simply smiled back.

"teddy, teddy uris."

it had officially been a week since teddy had last talked to Phil, and honestly he wasn't proud of that, he had tried apologizing multiple times, but each time Phil refused to acknowledge his presence which made teddy's heart ache and fill with guilt. He had technically called him ' queer ' which isn't a bad thing at all, being queer that is. But it was just the way he had said it.. teddy told himself that he WILL end up having a conversation and talk about what happened with Phil, maybe actually apologizing. But right now, he had to focus, recently he had started talking and hanging out with Lilly a lot, even hanging out with her at his and phil's secret hangout area. Teddy wanted to be brave for once, he had never been able when his bullies came to piss him off, Phil was usually there to stand up for him and send them away but Phil wasn't here now, was he?

New years eve was coming up and Teddy knew that it was a tradition to share a kiss as soon as the clock hits twelve, and midnight arises. And that was what Teddy was going to do.

" really, where are all these paper planes coming from? Do you just like.. bring one over every time you come up her? "

Lilly says, chuckling.

"Oh- no they're not mine.. they're phil's, he loves bringing them up here to throw them and hope for 'them to fly'."

Lilly nods, examining the airplane, Teddy takes a deep breath, glancing at lilly.

" lilly? "

Teddy starts nervously, talk about being brave. Lilly hums, looking up into teddy's eyes.

"Will you.. well.. could we come back here for new years? I heard that as soon as it hits midnight, fireworks appear, and i'd really like to be up there to see it happen... I mean.. wouldn't you? "

Teddy says, looking down, expecting lilly to say no and make fun of him for even asking but instead..

" of course, i'd love to! I was actually thinking about asking you!! "

Lilly exclaims, her cheeks tinted with a shade of red, her smile wide. Startled, Teddy looks up, not expecting her to accept.

" really? Wow uh yeah that's awesome.. uhm.. can't wait! "

He chuckles nervously, he really did not want to mess it up..

...

" Teddy, wait up! "

It was finally the day, Teddy was gonna kiss lilly, he had arrived at the standpipe, lilly was probably already up there waiting for him, he didn't want to keep her waiting, but a familiar voice called out to him..

" Teddy, wait up! wait for me! "

he already knew who it was but he still glanced back to make sure, it was phil, of course.

" uhm i hope you didn't forget, we're supposed to be hanging out tonight, you know, to celebrate new years? "

Phil explained, looking everywhere BUT Teddy.

" aren't you supposed to be mad at me? "

" I was but i totally forgive you man, you know we do this every year! so what do you say, come with me? "

Teddy looked down, he really didn't want to upset Phil, but this was his only chance with lilly, and he had to take it.

" look Phil, I'm sorry but i'm already doing something tonight, maybe another time "

Phil's face dropped immediately, but he didn't press any further, he was already starting to back away, his bike in hand.

" oh uh yeah that's fine man, another time yeah.. well uh.. see you tomorrow then.. "

tomorrow, Teddy felt bad. He watched as Phil biked away, watched until he couldn't see Phil anymore, then he simply turned around and made his way up to where lilly was waiting..

...

" you're the one who asked me to come and you're the one who's late "

Lilly says, chuckling, she didn't actually mind him being late.

" something came up.. "

he paused looking at the view.

" nothing important though don't worry about it. "

It was almost time, just one minute away and the fireworks would finally be presented and Teddy could make his move..

he kept his gaze on the sky, counting down in his head.

a loud noise, and then another.. his eyes lighted up, there they were, and it was teddy's signal, he glanced at lilly, next to him, she was looking at the sky, the colorful lights of the fireworks making her look even more beautiful than she already was, lilly must have noticed him staring as her gaze quickly went from the sky, to his eyes.

Nothing happened for a few seconds, they were just staring into each others eyes, they didn't even realize they were leaning in until their lips met, it was quick, but it meant everything to them, when they pulled back, Teddy couldn't hold back his smile, while Lilly couldn't look into his eyes.

Maybe this year was gonna be teddy's year, maybe..
