leftovers

Summary:

“You mentioned only really having had frozen food as a kid, so I thought I’d bring you something from Leblanc.” Ren shuffles his feet—rather astounding, it is, to see him so shy. If Goro weren’t mistaken, he’d be inclined to believe he’s… embarrassed.

Which is a rather intriguing emotion on him, all things considered.

He holds out three containers of curry, stacked up under his chin. They point Goro’s gaze towards his lightly pink cheeks, which he quirks a brow at.

or: ren gives goro leftovers; goro uses this to his advantage like the evil detective he is

Work Text:

“You mentioned only really having had frozen food as a kid, so I thought I’d bring you something from Leblanc.” Ren shuffles his feet—rather astounding, it is, to see him so shy. If Goro weren’t mistaken, he’d be inclined to believe he’s… embarrassed.

Which is a rather intriguing emotion on him, all things considered.

He holds out three containers of curry, stacked up under his chin. They point Goro’s gaze towards his lightly pink cheeks, which he quirks a brow at.

Did he shoo Boss out for this little gift? He doesn’t see him around.

In all the time he’s known Ren, he hasn’t exactly shown himself as the type to grow red-faced over simple things like these. He’s outwardly noble, of course, and not one to remain bashful about his actions.

Of course, three months of dating isn’t exactly enough time to see Ren in full—God knows it isn’t enough time for Goro—but, still. It’s amusing.

The smile that crops up on his face smooths out much more realistically than his typical ones. “That was a mere offhand comment. Regardless, I suppose I must thank you for your kindness—though, I hope you know I can sustain myself, Ren-kun.”

Ren’s head drops marginally behind the tower of plastic containers, glasses going slightly off centre. He mutters out a reply, “Of course I know that.”

His lips push together—a subtle tell of his annoyance—before they blend out into Ren’s usual neutrality. “Consider it preparation for exams.” He explains away, and Goro takes vindictive pride in telling him off.

“That isn’t for a little while, Ren,” He tilts his head, “And I’m certain you know it.”

“I figured that, well…” Ren trails off, bringing his gaze back up. His eyes are as stoic behind their frames as usual, but his pink cheeks do all the talking.

Good thing Goro could be considered something of an ace detective, otherwise it may be incredibly arduous to crack such a difficult case.

“Hm?” Goro hums sweetly, really turning up the Detective Prince attitude. He’s on the verge of having Ren cornered, he just needs to push a little further. “What were you saying, Ren-kun?”

“N-Nothing.” Ah. Stuttering. How primitive.

He hardly holds back his catty grin, instead focusing his attention on twirling a piece of his hair. Ren’s eyes latch onto his finger like clock work, and the detective lets out a pleased sigh.

“Well, I’m certainly not one to object to free food, hm?” Goro smiles, “However, I came here for a coffee, as well. Seems you’ve been a little hasty in your approach, Ren-kun.”

“Right.” Ren darts his gaze to the corner of his vision, blinking rapidly. He looks so genuinely caught off guard, it’s stunning.

“Is it alright if you keep them in the fridge for now?” Goro asks, twirling around Ren to take a seat in his regular barstool.

The boy looks dazed as he waddles around to face him, still clunkily carrying the containers. Eventually, after a rather adorable amount of time, Ren nods, walking to the other side of the cafe. He shoves the curry into the fridge and the door shut with little too much force.

He flinches at the harsh sound that follows, and, perhaps if Goro pushes a little more, flinching at his own shadow will be next.

What an incredible opportunity that has fallen into his lap.

“Have you been cooking as of late?” Goro asks innocently enough.

Ren jerks his eyes over to him, nodding in affirmation. “I’ve been practicing with Sojiro lately. Futaba seems to not mind my cooking, so I hoped you wouldn’t either.”

What a lack of confidence in a boy who typically fiends for competition.

Goro giggles into his gloved palm. “Don’t say such things. I’m sure it’s excellent.”

Ren messes with the scruff at the back of his head. He drops it quickly, but his voice is still soft in its reply, “You haven’t tried it yet.”

“If it’s as outstanding as your coffee, then I’m sure it will live up to my expectations.” He places his cheek in his palm, expression teetering on too sadistically smiley.

The boy brushes some of his curls over his pink ears, but ultimately doesn’t reply. Shame. A smart move on Ren’s part, but still a shame.

He instead walks over to the shelf of coffee beans, selecting a simple Jamaican blend. He places the bag down on the counter, and Goro watches dutifully.

Pretty hands, pretty hair, and simply adorable when blushing. He can’t help but wonder how exactly all his confidence fell straight out his ears upon attempting to give the detective something as simple as leftovers.

Somehow, that same detective is charmed by leftovers.

He doesn’t exactly need Ren assuming he’s innately helpless because of his circumstances, but perhaps he should accept being pampered by his persistently kind Ren.

“Here you go, Akechi.” He places down the piping cup of coffee before him. The steam wafts up a beautiful scent—rich, and filled with light citrus.

The boy’s hand remains parked on the wood even as the coffee clinks down, and Goro considers for a moment, before eventually taking his opportunity.

His fingers carefully slink over Ren’s, coming into contact with worryingly cold skin. It’s rather unexpected, considering the warmth permeating off his face, and despite the leather gloves, Goro can practically feel his own hands being thawed. He lets out a small, chuffed breath before intertwining their fingers.

“A-Akechi?” Ren lips part like a stunned owl, following with a small noise of bewilderment as the detective outright connects their hands. His fingers twitch, but his face somehow doesn’t burn any brighter. Goro imagines he’s just holding his blush in so tightly that if he does anything more severe, he may just explode.

And who would spoonfeed him leftovers then?

Hardly caring for the potential brain damage he may inflict on his boyfriend, Goro leans forward, breath ghosting over Ren’s chapped lips.

“What—what are you doing?” Ren murmurs, eyes widening as his face is suddenly overcome with red. Seems his theory was correct.

His breath hitches as Goro pulls him forward by his plain green apron, slotting their lips together.

Ren’s lips are coarse, but the creamy lip balm Goro applies regularly makes up for it, slicking their lips as their mouths creep open further. Initially stunned, Ren remains locked in place, body tense.

Eventually, his shoulders even out and he leans in further, giving Goro a taste of… hm. Curry. As though Ren couldn’t become any more endearing, it seems he’d been taste-testing before handing it off to him. How sweet.

Goro rewards by pressing in further, letting their ragged breaths intermingle for a few moments longer. Ren keens into their kiss, cold fingers tickling Goro’s scalp as they intermingle in his hair.

Truly, it’s sweet. But he’s not quite done embarrassing his boyfriend.

“I’m glad you’ve been testing the food for its safety, Amamiya-kun.”

Ren pulls back as he processes the thought, before his hands drop to his side, face overcome with embarrassment. “Why are you like this…?”

“Someone has to be.” Goro shrugs, and pulls him back in for another kiss.
