Work Text:

Minato is awoken from sleep by a loud thump coming from his living room. He grabs a kunai and sneaks out, only to stop at the sight of himself? A Minato with black eyes and cracks all over his body wearing a Hokage cloak. He pauses and just stares, he opens his mouth to say something when he hears it, a cry, a baby’s cry. “Shh shh. It’s ok. I don’t have long, the seal will burn out in five minutes. Please take them. They are your grandchildren. Their mother and father will come back for them soon, but they are in the middle of a war.” Minato takes the two bundles from his counterpart. “This is Akira.” He points to the boy with two whisker marks, “This is Kaito.” He gestures to the boy with three. “Their parents will be back soon. My daughter left a scroll with information on it to look after them. Just make sure to introduce them to Kushina. So we can remember when exactly to come back.” The man starts fading. Minato, meanwhile, hasn't said a word. He looks up to find that his counterpart has disappeared.

He looks down at the babies in his arms. The two bundles are sleeping peacefully. He’s honestly lost on what to do. He has a daughter with Kushina and he’s dead in the future, and there’s another war, he plops himself down on the couch, and the babies squirm when he moves too heavily. He needs Kushina, but he doesn't want to put the babies down.

He doesn't know how long he has been sitting there waiting for Kushina to magically appear. But he jolts when there’s a knock at the door. He stands up and tries to arrange the babies so he can answer it. It doesn't work. He gives up and yells out to come in. His team all pile into his house. Oh, he must have missed their team meeting. “Hey Sensei, you were late. We were worried because you’re… Are you holding babies?” Minato jolts and clears his throat. “I need one of you to find Kushina and get her here. Please.” Kakashi comes closer and pulls his mask down to just under his nose; he sniffs. Then looks up at Minato. “Why do they smell like mine?” Minato makes a strangled noise. “I need Kushina, and I’ll explain. Please.” Kakashi flies through hand signs and sends his dogs off to find Kushina. Honestly, he’s never seen him move so fast. He’s still staring at the babies. Rin and Obito look at each other.

“Kakashi, there's a scroll tucked into one of their blankets. Can you pull it out and read it to me, please?” Kakashi pulls his mask back up and gently pulls the scroll that was tucked in Kaito’s blanket out. “Um, Sensei. Maybe you could put them down? Or maybe we could go sit?” Rin gestures to the couch. Minato nods robotically. He’s so out of his depth at the moment.

“Hey Dad,

Sorry to dump this on you, but a big fight has just started, and I need these two safe. I fought so hard for what I have, I’m not letting anything happen to them, ya know? I’m not sure what you told yourself, but please take care of Akira and Kaito. Akira is the one with two whisker marks, and Kaito is the one with three. Other than that, they are identical. Their last names we haven't decided, but use Hatake, Uzumaki, or Namikaze, any works. They are like 8 months old and can be pretty energetic when they want to be. I’ve left you everything you need in the storage scroll attached. Ugh. I’m sorry, but this dude is a bad dude, and he’s after me specifically, so I didn’t want to leave anything to chance, and considering all my other precious people can defend themselves, it seemed like a good idea. If you can keep them out of the eyes of everyone bar your team and Mom, that would be cool. DO NOT LET DANZO OR THE SANDAIME SEE THEM. Ok, I’m being told that I’m being dramatic now. Sandaime is ok as long as it’s nowhere near the Hokage tower. I’ll come to get them soon. I know you're busy, and I’m really sorry. I love you.

Mitsuki.

P.S. - They have no allergies. Feed them whatever.

Minato drops his head back on the couch. “I have no idea what to do.” Just then, the door gets thrown open, and Kushina is herded inside by a pack of dogs. They all disappear, bar Pakkun. “Ok, ok, I’m here, Kami, Kakashi-kun, what the hell?” Kakashi stands up and hands her the scroll.

She takes it and reads it. When she’s done, she pops out everything from the storage scroll: nappies, formula, bottles, clothes, toys, wipes, a little crib-looking thing, and even a baby sling pops out. She chuckles.“Well, at least they are organised.” She sets everything up while the team just watches. Kakashi looks torn between helping and not wanting to leave the babies. Pakkun approaches, he sniffs once, then twice, and then looks at Kakashi and poofs away. Obito clears his throat. “This is totally awkward.” Kushina laughs, and it’s so loud it startles the babies.

They wake up slowly, and Minato’s breath catches in his throat, and tears come to his eyes because they have his eyes. They start squirming around in their blankets like they want to be freed. They all just sort of sit around staring at the babies. Until Obito gets fed up and stands. “Hey, Akira, Hey, Kaito. I’m your Obo-nii, It’s nice to meetcha!” The babies babble at him back and wiggle some more. Kushina shoves him out of the way and picks one up, and she takes him to Minato’s room. Kakashi scoops up the other one and follows Kushina. They place them on the bed, side by side, and unwrap them; they both give out big stretches and then roll into each other, and they start giggling. They change them and take them back out to the living area.

They find Minato in the kitchen cooking. “Rama, rama!” Kushina giggles at Kaito. “No, it’s not Ramen.” Obito laughs, “Totally related to you guys.” Once everyone is settled around the table with their plates of food. Minato speaks up. “This is so weird, I’m so lost. I was woken up this morning to a version of myself, he said: These are your grandkids, their parents will be back for them soon, but they are in the middle of a war. I guess the scroll explains the rest.” Kushina hums. “Time-travel seal, for babysitting. It’s a good idea.” Obito laughs. “They’re cute. I wonder how long they will be here for.”

Minato clears his throat and makes sure to look at Kushina. “He also said, make sure Kushina is with them so we know when to come back.” Minato hopes he’s not reading into it too much, but the only thing that could tie their time with Kushina is the fox. He can see her eyes soften as she takes the words in.

“Ne, Kakashi-kun, are you ok?” The boy who hasn't said a word nods. “Yeah, it just feels weird. Like I knew they were mine from scent. But it’s overwhelming.” Kakashi sighs and goes back to feeding bits of rice to the baby on his lap. Minato and Kushina share a look. “Well, they do have your hair, and if you put a little mask on them, they would look just like you apart from their eyes.” Kakashi nods at Obito.

The rest of the day goes on, and they have fun with the babies. Pakkun and Bull make an appearance after lunch, and the babies go nuts for them. Bull, like the big baby he is, is in his element. Rin and Obito are sworn to secrecy and are sent home just after three, when the babies are sleeping. Obito makes sure to cuddle each one before they leave.

Just as they sit down for dinner, there’s another thump from the living room. Minato rushes in only to stop at the sight of the two people before them. The woman smiles at him, and all he can see is Kushina’s big, beautiful smile. He stands there and takes in his daughter, long blonde hair pulled up into twin buns, Konoha hitai-ate around her forehead, three whisker marks on each cheeks, she isn't very tall, wearing a Jonin uniform with a white haori over the top that has blue waves along the bottom of it. She’s beautiful and so much like him and Kushina. He turns his eyes to the taller man; he has both eyes uncovered, mask on, basically the bigger version of his student. “Yo,” “Hi Dad,” Kushina comes barreling into the room, and they both sweep forward to hug her close.

“How long do you have?” Mitsuki tilts her head and locks eyes with her Kakashi. “We can stay for a little bit. I'll make the seal to get home.” Kushina drags her into the dining area. As soon as she’s in sight, though, both babies who are on Kakashi’s lap snap to her. “Ma, Mama, MA!” Mitsuki sweeps forward and takes the babies from him. She gets a little growl from little Kakashi, and Mitsuki just growls right back.

“Ah, sorry. That happens sometimes. I’m Uzumaki Mitsuki.” Big Kakashi walks into the room with Minato, and the babies say their hello’s to him too. “Do I need to introduce myself? How long have you had them for?” “Minato dropped them off this morning.” Kakashi and Mitsuki share a look. “That’s a good side effect then. We sent them to you a week ago.” “Did everything go well?” Mitsuki looks down at the babies. “It was a hard fight. But we got through it, Dattebayo.” Kushina squeals at the verbal tic. “You need to wipe Obito, Rin, and mini Kakashi’s memories of them when you see them next. Please.” Minato gives her a concerned look. “Why me? They’re mine.” Kakashi spits out, with pink dusting his cheeks. Mitsuki smiles at him softly. “Because your instincts will be out of whack, you’ll remember when the time passes again. You’ll constantly be searching for them otherwise.” Kakashi grumbles.

They have a nice dinner, Kushina and Minato ask a lot of questions. Then Mitsuki disappears to create the seal. “Thank you for looking after our daughter.” Big Kakashi blushes. “You're welcome.” He looks down. “I love her and I’ll look after her as long as I can. But I'll do it for her, not for you.” Minato smiles at him. “That’s all I could ask for.” “Good answer!” Big Kakashi smiles at them. “Hang in there little me, things get worse before they get better and it takes a long time but one day you’ll be happy.” Little Kakashi nods at him.

“Ready to go?” Big Kakashi picks up the scroll with all of the baby's stuff and stands next to his wife. “Yeah.” She flicks a seal that lands on Kakashi’s forehead. “I love you both.” They squeeze them into one more hug and Mitsuki pats little Kakashi on the head. Then she stomps her foot and whispers. “Fuuin.” A pulse of chakra and they are gone, Minato and Kushina hug each other with tears in their eyes.

Kakashi blinks. “Why am I here?” Minato chuckles. “You came over for dinner.” Kakashi looks around and scents the air. It smells nice, like foxes, home, babies and sunshine.

The next day when Rin and Obito knock on his door he’s ready with the memory suppression.

“Kashi you ok?” Mitsuki looks over to her husband who is laughing. “Yeah, yeah. Just Our scent lingered. I was so confused.” Mitsuki chuckles.
