Work Text:
It was a groggy morning, not too cold but not warm enough. The dormitory windows had frost over them and the streets outside were covered in ice that a passerby occasionally slipped on.
Nevertheless, it was an exciting morning, it was the two year anniversary of Kenny and Seok's marriage, two years of laughs, two years of tears, two years of being connected mentally and physically. After all, their vows did say through life and death.
Seok woke up quite early, sleep covering his eyes. He rolled out of bed and slowly but surely got up. Surprisingly, his other dorm-mates were awake before him, and he was met with 3 pairs of tired eyes. "Good morning," Nathan grumbled, his voice strained from sleep, "did you sleep okay?"
"Of course I did" Seok said, lying through his teeth. He hadn't slept well at all, he was tossing and turning hoping that he would wake up and he'd be with Kenny that they could celebrate their 2nd anniversary out on a picnic or a restaurant or watching their favourite movie snuggled up at home. "Well," Aito said carefully, "get dressed, you have a long day."
And so, Seok washed, using Kenny's favourite shampoo, he got dressed into their matching jumpers paired with dark, black trousers, finishing his look off with Kenny's cologne. Kenny's cologne always smelt like home, like an endless dream, it was one of the first things Seok noticed when they met.
The drive was quiet, an eerie buzz was in the air. "I got those flowers." Hyuk said pointing at the bouquet in the back. Narcissuses and red chrysanthemums, an ironic pairing, and yet it was Kenny's favourite, always was and always will be. Besides, they'll never know if he changes his mind.
Finally, they pulled up to a small allotment, Seok going ahead holding the bouquet, leaving the others behind. It was a trail that is engraved into Seok's mind, his body moving without him thinking, his feet leading the way, his mind following behind. Then, he reached the spot. Seok's knees dropped to the ground, his legs scraping and bleeding against the gravel. His sobs could be heard a mile away, his body shaking violently with every breath. "Breathe" Kenny would say. "It's okay, I'm here" and then Kenny would hug him, engulfing his beloved in a bone tightening hug. But that's what Kenny would say, and that's what Kenny would however Kenny won't say that, he won't say anything. Because as Seok looked up, he was greeted with a headstone;
Here lies Kenny Hao
Loved as a husband, son and friend
December 9th 2002 - July 18 2025
Gone but not forgotten
It may have been Kenny and Seok's 2nd marriage anniversary, but it was also Kenny's 1st death anniversary.
