Chapter Text
When you first met Emily she told you, 'I'm looking for something casual. I don't do relationships. I don't have time for them.'
That was almost two years ago at this point.
It had started as casual, it really did. Then it became something else entirely, something you will forever be grateful for.
You two first met at the bar, she was out with her team, the one she had only been on for a few months at the time. You were out celebrating with your roommate, you had just closed your first big case.
You approached her, waiting until her coworkers left her alone at the table. You two talked for a while, until you were finally able to convince her to dance.
She held you close, whispering things she wanted to do to you if you'd let her take you home. Even though you initiated the conversation, she was quick to take control.
The night ended exactly how you expected, both of you laid out bare naked in her bed, trying to catch your breath.
"We should do this again," you panted out, turning to see the smirk on her face.
"Definitely." That's when she told you she doesn't do relationships, and the sex was too good for you not to agree to something casual.
Now you two live together in a townhouse just outside the district.
It wasn't easy getting her to agree to more, but it was definitely worth it. You'd go through those five months of hell just to have what you have now.
Your mornings always start the same, you wake up before Emily, climbing out of bed to get in a workout before she even stirs. Coffee is made by the time you enter the front door, Emily almost always waiting in the kitchen for you.
"Thanks babe," you smile, wrapping an arm around her as she leans in for a kiss. She doesn't care that you're covered in sweat, normally pulling you even closer.
You go off to shower, more often than not, Emily joins you. You both stay in until the water runs cold.
Emily dries her hair while you pick out what to wear. You hold up each option, always letting Emily have the final say.
Emily pulls you close, fastening the buttons on your blouse while asking what your schedule looks like for the day,
"Wrapping up a case this morning, should be fairly easy. Meeting with a client after lunch, then in the office unless something new comes in. You?"
Emily smiles, kissing you softly before she pulls away, "Hotch wants us in by nine, said a case came across his desk late last night."
"So you'll be gone for a few days?" You pout, slipping past her to enter the bathroom.
"Most likely, we won't know until briefing, you know how it is." She wraps her arms around your waist from behind, settling her chin on your shoulder while you do your makeup.
You both make your way back downstairs, cooking a small breakfast before heading out. You make sure Emily is nowhere near the stove, there isn't enough time for her to ruin your kitchen today.
"Don't do anything stupid," you smirk, grabbing her jaw as you kiss her.
She pulls back, "define stupid."
You groan, "I love you, please be safe."
"I always am," she counters, pecking your lips once more before stepping back. You catch her wrist, tugging her collar down to display her most recent scar, "this says otherwise."
"I love you," she says as she covers the scar with her other hand.
"Emily."
"I will try my best. I always come home, don't I?"
You nod, using your hold on her wrist to pull her back into your arms.
"Let me know where you're going, when you know."
"You know I will," she kisses you gently, "and if I don't, you know Garcia will."
You nod, letting her step back to grab her things. You both say your goodbyes once more before going your separate ways.
It's been three days, Emily is off with her team in some midwestern town. Other than her calling you before she goes to bed each night, you haven't heard much.
Finally your phone rings, but you freeze when you see JJ's name instead of your girlfriend's.
JJ greets you before filling you in, "Emily's fine. She's in the hospital for a head wound, but she's okay."
"JJ, how can you say Emily's fine when she's in the hospital?"
JJ sighs, "I promise you she is okay, she's been arguing with her doctor for the last hour, I'd give her my phone to talk to you but Morgan finally convinced her to rest."
You snort, closing your eyes as you perfectly imagine what JJ is describing to you.
She tells you how Emily got hurt, saying she went in alone and was hit with a two by four, "I can have her call you when she wakes up."
You thank JJ, feeling better knowing the UnSub was caught and the team is with Emily at the hospital.
She finally calls, almost three hours after you heard from JJ.
"Baby, I miss you." Emily says as soon as the call connects.
"I miss you too, are you okay?"
Emily scoffs, and you swear you can hear her eyes roll.
"They're being dramatic, I'm fine."
"Em, honey, you were hit in the head with a wooden plank, it's okay if you don't feel great."
Emily argues that she is perfectly fine, and that they're wasting time sitting in the hospital when they could be on a plane home.
You can hear Morgan's stern voice through the speaker, being able to tell by his tone that he is completely tired of Emily.
"Can you hand the phone to Derek please?" You finally ask, hearing Emily's grumbled reply as she hands over the phone.
"How bad is it?" You ask once Derek confirms he's taken the phone off speaker.
"She surprisingly doesn't have a concussion, and can be discharged within the next hour or so."
"Thank God." You mutter, pulling your hand away from your mouth after you finally realize you've been chewing on your cuticles.
"You'll all head home once she's discharged?"
"Yep, should be back in town tonight, I can let you know when we're thirty minutes out." Derek knows you'll want to see Emily the second she's back in DC, so it's nice of him to offer to text you.
You thank him and say your goodbyes to Emily, promising you'll see her soon.
You lean against the passenger side of your car, watching as the team unloads from the jet. You can hear Emily arguing before you see her, telling Derek off for trying to help her off the plane.
"Derek, I swear to God if you try putting your arm around me," you watch as she shoves his arm away, trying your best not to laugh.
Her face brightens immediately once her eyes land on yours, you smile back, letting her make her way to your car.
"You're here," she says quietly, setting her bag down to wrap her arms around you.
"I didn't want you driving home." You kiss the side of her head, pulling back to observe her injuries.
"Baby, I'm fine, let's just go home please." You nod, bending over to pick up her bag before she grabs it again. You wave towards Derek, letting him know she's in good hands.
She climbs into the passenger seat, laying her head back on the headrest as you get her things into the car.
"You look terrible," you comment as you slide into the driver's seat.
"Thanks," she mumbles, eyes closed, but you see her try not to smile. She blindly reaches for your hand, exhaling once your fingers intertwine with hers.
The car ride is silent, you let her get some rest, deciding to interrogate her later. Your thumb rubs gently over her knuckles, knowing this calms her.
You park the car in its designated spot, squeezing her hand to let her know you are home. She stirs, groaning as she stretches.
"Let's head in and get you a bath started," you decide, exiting the vehicle to grab her bag and help her in.
"I don't need a bath, I just want to be with you." She admits quietly, grabbing your hand again as you open her door. You smile, kissing her hand before pulling her from the car.
She drops your hand as she makes her way onto the couch, falling into the corner spot you two are always fighting over.
"You're lucky you're injured, or else I'd be pulling you up from that spot." Emily smiles, reaching a hand out to you, beckoning you to sit with her.
"Let me grab the first aid kit so I can clean that cut." You hear Emily groan as you leave her alone in the living room, making your way to the kitchen to find the kit.
Once you've collected everything you need, you make your way back over to the couch. She reaches a hand out again, her eyes closed as she waits for you. You try sitting next to her, but she pulls you so you are straddling her hips, "Emily."
"What, you need to clean my head wound." She says with a playful smirk, cracking one eye open to catch your reaction. You roll your eyes, but settle yourself into her lap anyways.
"Wanna talk about it?" You ask as you gently peel away the gauze.
"No, definitely not." Her hands squeeze at your thighs as you clean the area around the cut.
"I'm glad you're okay." You whisper softly.
"I always come back," she reminds you, opening her eyes to catch yours, "I'm sorry I scared you."
You stare into her deep brown eyes, nodding at her apology. You lean forward and press a single kiss to her lips. You continue to clean her cut, carefully placing new gauze over it.
