Chapter 12

Unexpected

Fusako, Sugiki Sensei and I were on the same flight home.

Fusako came to sit with me, which I appreciated very much. She told me Sugiki needed alone time. He still hadn’t recovered and looked terrible.

I didn’t dare ask him what had happened. He just acknowleged me with a short nod during boarding, sat in his seat, put on earplugs and closed his eyes.

He was even paler than usual, and seemed gaunt, with dark circles around his eyes. He wasn’t as meticulously put together as usual, even his hair seemed in disarray, as if he had run his hands through it multiple times.

Fusako told me that he hadn’t eaten anything for about two days, and that she was extremely worried about him.

I really wonder what happened. Shinya hasn’t replied much to my messages. He just wrote a short “I’m OK, no worries” and that was it. I haven’t heard from him since then.

                                                            *******

Fusako and I were exhausted, and we both soon fell asleep.

I woke up a couple of hours later to find her snuggled up to me, with her head on my shoulder and one hand on my arm. I felt inexplicably happy and regarded her lovely face until she stirred and opened her eyes. She looked straight at me with a dreamy expression, “I really, really like you, Aki-Chan,” she murmured.

Her gaze dropped to my lips, then back to my eyes, “I’d very much like to kiss you,” she whispered.

I must say, I wasn’t expecting that turn of events. I felt myself blushing furiously and at a loss for words.

Fusako bit her lip and put a little space between us. She lowered her gaze, blushing herself, “I’m sorry, I think I misread your friendliness. Please forget what I said.”

Her hand left my arm and I suddenly felt bereft, “No, no, that’s not what I mean,” I blurted out, “I really like you too, very much so, but… you know, this was unexpected nonetheless.”

She nodded silently.

“I would much like that, you know,” I hesistated. She looked at me again with a question in her eyes.

Words failed me, but I let my lips tell her exactly what I meant.

Aki tasted sweet, her mouth was soft an pliant, and I had to bite back a moan. This definitely wasn’t the place for a make out session. I had never kissed a girl before and was surprised at myself how right it felt. That short little peck had awakened something dormant in me that I hadn’t even known was there.

Fusako was looking at my with such adoration, that I felt tears well up. I took her hand in mine and we interlaced our fingers. This was the best thing to ever happen to me.

I don’t know how I could have been so blind. I knew I had felt secure and happy with Fusako from the first time we met and danced together. Our interactions had always been very friendly, and I enjoyed our exchanges very much. I loved her company more than any other, but I just never had thought we could be more than good or even best friends.

Fusako snuggled up to me with a contented little sigh. “I’m so happy, Aki-Chan,” she said.

“Can I ask you something,” I asked shyly.

“Mhm,” she nodded.

“Since when, err… you know…”

Fusako looked up with a radiant smile, “I fell for you the moment I saw you dance on video,” she said. “I like women, but I’ve never acted on it. I’ve had a couple of boyfriends, but never for long. I’ve always had crushes on girls, but I suppose I was too shy to do anything about it.”

She chuckled a little, “You can’t imagine how excited I was when Sugiki Sensei announced we would work with you and Suzuki Sensei.”

She sighed deeply, “My heart was beating so fast the first time you came to our studio, I didn’t know how to act in front of you.”

“You seemed so self-assured and cool,” I said.

Fusako smiled, “ You made it so easy to talk to you, Aki-Chan. You’re even more lovely in person than on video, and you’re the coolest person I’ve met in my life.”

Oh, my god, she’s so adorable. I’m sure I’ll fall for her just as much as she seems to have fallen for me.

This is sooo exciting!!!

We talked and talked about our families, our lives, our dancing experiences and partners, there was so much to find out about each other that time passed so swiftly, we were surprised when we found ourselves back in Japan.
