Time Enough For Us

Notes:

This is the final fill of my copy of the Cloneship Rare Pair bingo card for 2025 and one of my few little ficlet dips into the Republic Commando clones of the Clone Wars that I've been poking at since reading the Republic Commando books.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The first time they had completed a mission together without other Commandos around on what Corr discovered later was a two person mission that Mereel had personally requested for them, nearly everything had gone wrong because the enemy had found them almost immediately. Afterwards when five units clankers were also successfully destroyed into their smaller component pieces, the Separatist target successfully acquired, and sent back to Command for interrogation with his armor dirty and smoking in places, Corr had let Mereel have it.

And the other Clone with pretty, gleaming dark eyes had merely thrown his head back with a sharp laugh that warmed Corr's insides as he glared at him. Mereel's grin widened into a show of teeth as the Null calmed down and took in his darkening expression.

"Aw don't be so mad, Corr." Mereel clapped him on the shoulder with a grin. "Let's get a drink. Think of it as a way of saying thank you to Skirata for all the time he put into making you a Commando with the rest of us."

Corr tilted his head to consider the idea as his blood finally ceased racing through his body and shook his head with a wry expression. "Fine. One drink."

Mereel snorted response as they returned to HQ to report in and snuck out afterwards in stolen civilian clothes.

"We've got time," Mereel whispered in the silence of their darkened room later, his arm wrapped loosely around Corr's middle.

Corr smiled into Mereel's shoulder. "Good. I will always have time for you."

.

"We've got time."

Mereel often thought fondly of the night he had said those words to Corr, half a statement and half a promise that they would take care of each other no matter how hard the War tried to keep them apart from each other.

Shaking himself mentally, he wondered how they, he and Corr, managed to find themselves in situations like this, the mission had felt wrong from the very moment that he'd seen the briefing as they slipped in between patrols, some that they were forced to fight and others they hid from, he felt pride as his partner slowly picked off the guards around the complex their current target was hiding out in. He wondered if a certain brother of his was keeping secrets again about the things that went mucking about in the shadows of the universe as he considered the door and the idea of kicking it or blowing it up into little pieces to deal with their target already. His thoughts were interrupted as he decided to consult his partner on the matter when his comm began beeping for his attention and that of his companion stirring beside him. With a low curse, he answered before the thing could attract unwanted, well more unwanted, attention to them.

"Mereel. Report." The grumbling voice of his brother Ordo was soft in his helmet as he transferred the call to replace the silence within his helmet, his partner made a soft sound of irritation that had wrapped itself snug around him.

"It hasn't even been that long yet. What missing my pretty face already, ner vod?" He responded with a slight smile that he knew would make his brother roll his eyes and promise some amount of violence towards his person. He glanced towards Corr through his visor. "Team is in place, restless, and ready to move."

"Good. Be careful and good hunting then."

Ending the call, he turned his attention to Corr and tugged the other man close to touch their helmets together as gently as Mereel knew how to be before pulling away.

"Let's hunt."

He would personally make sure that they would always have time even if he had to fight the entire galaxy back to make sure his partner was happy.
