Summary
After being forced to resign from the Church for simony, the once-powerful and bitter Joseph Tremblay lives alone in luxury, wrapped in silk and resentment. He secretly longs for the freedom of his youth playing hockey in Canada and finds small salvation on Roman ice rinks, where he unexpectedly reunites with Raymond O’Malley, the warm and grounded Vatican secretary he can’t stop thinking about.
Joseph’s edge slipped. He swerved, slapped the glass with his palm to steady himself, and pushed toward the gate, heat rising under his collar despite the cold air.
He fixed Raymond with a glare.
“W–What are you doing here?” His voice came out harsher, thinner, than he intended. “Are you spying on me?”
Raymond’s eyes widened. He lifted both hands, immediate and earnest.
“God, no! No!” he said quickly, almost tripping over the word in his rush to get it out. “I- I just-” -
