After Spider is first kidnapped by the recoms and brought to Bridgehead, Quaritch convinces Ardmore to let him try to integrate Spider and get the info once he’s on their side instead of using the brain scanner right away. He justifies it as “saving the kid of a dead war hero from the savages” being a better propaganda story than “tortured kid for info and kid died/was seriously hurt.”
Quaritch is immediately drawn to Spider once he realizes who he is, and considers him his son. He realizes he’s going to have to act fast to protect him because the RDA doesn’t care about collateral damage or ethics, so convincing Spider to switch sides before he’s hurt is his priority. -
