“So… How was your trip?” Vi tried to engage in small talk, but received a deadpan look from Caitlyn. “What? I’m being nice.”
“We came together, Violet.”
“Oh, I wish.”
Caitlyn snorted and turned back to her suitcase, taking out the few remaining products from inside.
They had been coworkers for four months now, and this was their first business trip together. Of course, they were sharing a hotel room — with two single beds, okay? No drama.
Well.
Almost no drama.
Vi was planning to finally make a move and hopefully join the two beds together into one by the end of the week, but a girl could only dream, right?
The redhead buffed, bored, and fell face-first on her bed.
“You should really start unpacking.”
Always so wise.
“Dun’wanit...” her voice was muffled by the cushions, and she could hear the most beautiful blue eyes she’s ever seen rolling. Vi turned her head then, watching Caitlyn organize her things sooo carefully.
So attractive.
“Well,” the taller one started after a moment, holding a few bottles in hand and a towel. “If you don’t mind, I’m going to shower now.”
“And if I mind?”
It escaped before Vi could stop it, and Caitlyn stared at her immediately. Not confused, not curious, not deadpan, but... Something in between. A little amused, maybe.
“Come again?”
I can come as many times as you want.
“I asked,” she thought ‘fuck it’, and got out of bed. Standing in front of the other woman was dangerous, but she already decided to own it. If it went sideways, she was always flirting for fun anyway. “And if I mind?”
Now, Caitlyn was definitely and visibly very amused. And a bit confused.
“Why would you mind if I shower now?” she asked with a glint in her eyes and a tremble in her lips, like she wanted to laugh.
Vi just smiled seductively and gave one more step closer, heart beating out of beat for a second when she noticed a breath hitch from the other. The laughter she was holding back seemed more like a nervous-anxious tic now.
Hm.
“’Cause, maybe... I want to shower with you.”
And, apparently, that was the worst thing she could’ve said.
“What th— Are you out of your mind?” Caitlyn's demeanor changed in a second, and she sounded... Pissed. Like the simple thought of showering together irritated her immensely. “Why would you even say that? Jesus.”
She walked past Vi and went right to the bathroom without looking back, murmuring to herself something about it being “so uncomfortable” and “not practical at all” while shaking her head.
Ouch.
Nice way to have your heart and ego broken.
She groaned and fell back on the bed, looking at the ceiling this time.
That’s what you get when you dream about love-making on a business trip.
“I’m blaming capitalism for this.”
And the shower started running.
A few months later...
“Right, okay! I need to confess something.” Vi interrupted the drunk chatter, making her coworkers look at her expectantly.
They were all out to celebrate the so-earned break after the busiest year ever. It was late enough that the drinks were already speaking for themselves, which justified the decision the redhead just made.
Directing her attention to Caitlyn, who was sitting right beside her with her eyes and lips shining, she chuckled and leaned in a little. Everyone was watching, waiting.
“Remember when we took that trip for the office?”
It took a half-second for that to make sense, it seemed.
“Oh, y-yeah! We shared a room, I remember.”
“And they were roommates...” Ekko murmured not that quietly, receiving a not-so-discreet kick from Vi. People laughed a little, and Caitlyn contained a smile by biting her lip.
Urgh.
“Well, right. Silence! I’m trying to confess something here.” she played the annoyed part, returning her attention to the woman by her side while the others tried and failed to be serious. “So, that trip. I had a plan to come out to you and say how into you I was, but you shot me down so terribly when I tried to flirt that I just— I couldn’t.”
And that caused the longest silence to ever exist between that specific group of people, which lasted about two and a half seconds.
“What the fuuuuck.” Jayce screamed before laughing hard, bringing Ekko, Loris, Mel, Claggor, and Grayson together with him.
“No, come on, guys! I’m being serious!”
“I’m gonna piss myself, oh my God.”
The whole chaos it caused was distracting enough that Vi didn’t catch Caitlyn’s reaction at first. She only came back to it when she felt the lightest touch possible on her shoulder, and everything was quiet for a beat.
If those blue eyes were bright earlier, the redhead could not think of a word to describe them now.
They look almost wet.
“When did you try to flirt with me, Violet?”
Say my name like this one more time, please.
“Uh? What?”
“The flirt. The one I apparently rejected. What was it?”
Your lips are so shiny.
I wish you wanted me.
“Oh, that.” she laughed a bit, clearing her throat for stability. Focus. “When you were going to shower, and I said something about maybe joining you and— Yeah, you were there, you know it.”
And, apparently, this time, that was the best thing she could’ve said.
Caitlyn’s smile was crazy.
“You’re kidding!” the look on Vi’s face probably showed she was not kidding at all, which seemed to be the funniest thing ever. Now that was embarrassing. “Oh my— Vi, that’s so— That’s so stupid.”
Ouch.
Again.
“Yeah, aha, okay. I get it. So stupid.” she tried to play it cool while her face burned, but pretending was never her thing. She needed some space. “Hey guys, if you don’t mind, I’m going to get some air. Be right back.”
She warned without actually waiting for a response, and just got up and walked in the direction of the back door.
Vi didn’t know what she was expecting to happen when her dumb-drunk brain decided to make decisions, but humiliation was definitely not in the cards. She was not the type to get embarrassed, let alone by telling the truth, but this felt different.
Felt so... Vulnerable. In a terrible, bad way.
“Get a grip, Jesus.” she murmured to herself, finally opening the back door and feeling the breezy air outside.
One minute.
That was all the time she got alone before the door opened again.
“And what if I do?” the most recognizable British accent ever echoed in the valley, making Vi turn her head instantly.
The dim light highlighted the taller woman's beauty in a way that exuded danger. She looked warm, approachable, dreamy, but so damn kissable that it made the redhead mad. Her heart was already racing just from the sight alone, and something in those eyes told her her troubles were far from being over.
“What?”
“What if I do mind?” Caitlyn approached by two steps; her whole demeanor was firm, steady, almost covering the way her breath hitched when she got too close. Vi noticed. Her breath caught, too. “What if I don’t want you to get some air alone?”
What was happening? Why did she look so... Pissed?
Is this really happening again?
“Cait, look, I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to embarrass you or make you uncomfortable, I really like being friend—Umph.”
Whiskey
It tastes like whiskey.
Vi didn’t drink whiskey.
Caitlyn did.
For a second, Vi tasted whiskey on her lips.
For a second, Caitlyn grabbed her by the neck and brought their lips together.
For a second, they kissed.
For a second, the cold breeze was warm, and the dim light was full black.
For a second, there was nothing else but a kiss.
A simple kiss.
And then it was over.
“God, I wanted— I want you so bad, Violet, I just—” her voice was raspy and low, but her eyes were dilated and so, so bright. Vi was dizzy. Is this really happening? “Showering together sucks. I hate it so much.”
Oh.
Oh.
“Caitlyn.” she tried to sound serious, but she could feel her lips trembling. That woman could not be real. Right there, looking so pretty and so adorable. Blushing and all that. “That’s extremely stupid.”
And they couldn’t help but laugh, together, smiling so wide their cheeks were hurting.
They kissed a little longer, too.
And other things…
