Chapter Text
Many moons ago, in western Corthanis, lie a kingdom named Celestevale. The kingdom was a haven of peace and harmony. Everything was fine until the augurs began seeing signs and having prophecies.
It was said that on the kingdom’s quincentennial, there would be an eclipse. On the night of this eclipse, two twin brothers would be born, one graced by the sun, the other blessed by the moon. These boys would grow apart over time, and on their 15th birthday, Celestevale would fall, and in its place would rise two powerful Kingdoms: Aurelia and Sylverstream. Aurelia would be led with freedom and joy, while Sylverstream would be led with order and preparation.
The King and Queen were worried, because the Queen was 5 months pregnant, and in 4 months, the Kingdom would turn 500. They wept, asking the augurs if there was any way to prevent this. Unfortunately, it was already written in the stars.
But what the King and Queen didn’t know was that the augurs saw something else. Many years after the splitting of Celestevale, two nobles would find their way together again. However, it was said that if the augurs told anyone of this reunion, both kingdoms would fall, permanently, leaving Corthanis in ash and rubble.
So they kept it a secret. And in 4 months, just as was prophesied, there was an eclipse. That night, during the last hour, the Queen gave birth to two baby boys. One had brilliant amber eyes and golden hair. The other had hair as dark as the night sky, with flecks of silver in his eyes. The golden boy was warm, quite literally. His skin radiated heat. His brother, on the other hand, was cold to the touch. They were polar opposites.
But to them, that didn’t matter. They were thick as thieves. The midnight boy was quiet, always listening as his brother, loquacious as ever, went off dreaming of his plans for the future, how he wanted a large family, a happy wife, and 3 children. It seemed to everyone that the augurs had gotten it wrong, that these boys would never have a falling out.
But on their 14th birthday, everything went wrong. No one knows how or why, but the boys stopped speaking entirely. They wouldn’t even acknowledge each other. Another thing happened, something no one had imagined. These boys had powers. The golden one was blessed with a bright flame. The midnight one was given the powers of ice.
The King became deathly sick. As he lay on his deathbed, he prayed that his two only sons would not kill each other. As he let out his final breath, the two brothers broke. They wept for days. Their mother, the Queen, in fear of them destroying what their father had fought so hard to protect, had split the kingdom by contract, giving half to each son on their 15th birthday.
From that moment on, Celestevale was no more. Aurelia and Sylverstream grew in its place. To this day, the two kingdoms remain the most powerful in all of Corthanis.
