Work Text:

Vi shot up with a gasp, drenched in sweat, her chest heaving. Her vision was blurry with tears, flashes of the nightmares coming back. Jinx. Vander. Falling. Dead. Gone forever. She rapidly inhaled and exhaled, trying to take deep breaths. Just like how Caitlyn taught her.

Caitlyn.

Vi turned her head, seeing that familiar body and that long, sleek blue hair turned away, peacefully sleeping. Caitlyn. Her girlfriend. She was at home. She was safe. But she didn’t feel like it. She needed comfort.

Caitlyn’s words echoed in Vi’s mind from when Vi first told her about her nightmares, when she moved into the Kiramman Manor. Violet, you are allowed to wake me up when you have a nightmare. I won’t be mad. I’d never be mad at you.

She thought about those words, about the sweet, soothing kiss from Caitlyn that followed after them. Vi slowly reached out, her hand trembling. It hovered over Caitlyn’s shoulder for a few moments, before she retracted it, getting off the bed. She didn’t want to disturb Caitlyn, not when she was sleeping so peacefully.

She needed air. Vi slowly and carefully got out of bed and crept to their balcony door, opening it and feeling the cool summer breeze immediately. She shut the door quietly, leaning on the balcony railing and looking out over the city. Piltover. Sometimes, she wondered how she’d even gotten here. She’d spent her whole life living down in the undercity, stealing food and scraping together coins, barely getting by.

And now here she was, living in one of the biggest mansions in Piltover, with the love of her life. How did she ever get so lucky?

Suddenly, she remembered why she was out here. The memories of the nightmare came back. Vander. His entire form changed, altered. Never the same again. Jinx. Pushing Vander away from Vi. Vi holding onto Jinx for dear life. Jinx deactivating Vi’s gauntlets. Jinx and Vander falling. Both gone forever.

Vi’s head fell, her body beginning to tremble again. Tears welled in her eyes, and she gripped the balcony railing for stability.

Suddenly, she heard the door slowly open, then the soft padding of footsteps towards her, and then, that familiar pair of arms wrapping around her. Her body immediately relaxed, all of the tension seeping out.

Caitlyn. Caitlyn’s here. I’m okay. I’m safe. she thought to herself. She finally let herself relax, and she started to cry quietly. Her soft crying slowly evolved into sobbing. Caitlyn held her tighter, gently shushing her and kissing the back of her shoulder.

Caitlyn didn’t rush her. She never did. She just held her, making sure she felt safe.

After nearly 15 minutes, Vi’s crying slowed to a stop. Caitlyn gently turned her around, looking down at her. Vi, her big, strong, fearless woman, reduced to a shaky, vulnerable state. She frowned, gently cupping Vi’s cheeks.

“I told you to wake me if you ever had a nightmare, Violet,” she said, her tone soft and gentle, her voice sweet and soothing.

Vi looked up at her and then averted her gaze. “I know. I just… I thought I could handle this on my own. I shouldn’t need comfort. And you just looked so peaceful when you were sleeping… I didn’t want to wake you.”

Caitlyn sighed, gently stroking Vi’s cheeks. Vi always puts others before herself. She always has. She was so selfless. Caitlyn admired it sometimes, but sometimes, it really took a toll on Vi.

Caitlyn just pulled Vi against her, letting Vi bury her face in her chest. She gently stroked Vi’s hair, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head.

“Come on, darling. Let’s get you back to bed,” she whispered, gently wrapping an arm around Vi’s shoulders, leading her back to their bedroom. Caitlyn gently laid down on her back, letting Vi lay down on top of her. Caitlyn softly smiled, gently stroking Vi’s soft red hair. Vi melted into the touch, her body finally seeming to relax under Caitlyn’s soothing touch.

“You get some rest, darling. I’ll be right here when you wake up,” Caitlyn whispered, her voice a soothing balm, luring Vi into sleep.

Vi smiled up at her, nuzzling into her chest more. “I love you, Cait,” she whispered.

Caitlyn reciprocated the smile, leaning down to press a kiss to Vi’s forehead. “I love you too, Violet.”

And with that, both women peacefully drifted off, wrapped in the comfort of each other.
