Chapter 1: Partners

Chapter Text

The evening streets of Detroit passed the window of the automatic car. The sound of rain made the drive less quiet as it hit the windows and roof. You didn't even bother to look outside because your eyes were closed as your LED at the right side of your head glowed a faint yellow. The car came to a stop and you finally opened your eyes, with your LED turning blue. Stepping out of the car you came across your fifth bar this evening. In big LED letters it read 'Jimmy's Bar'. Upon stepping closer you noticed 2 warning posters. One showed a dog with the warning that dogs weren't allowed. The second warning was on a red poster with a blue triangle, also forbidding entrance to androids. Your LED flashed yellow.

Enter Jimmy's Bar

As an android you ignored the red poster and opened the door into Jimmy's bar. You came here because you were designed to accomplish a mission and nothing will stand in your way of accomplishing it. All eyes were on you. Your own eyes wandered all around the place, scanning all the unfamiliar faces. Non of them was of your interest, so you moved deeper into the bar. Whispers from the stranger talking about you, all of them wondering what an android was doing here, especially because a red poster said that entrance to androids was forbidden. An old man was sitting at the bar, his gaze focused on his whiskey in his hand. He most probably didn't even notice an android entering the bar the way he was glaring at his drink. Your LED flashed yellow as you scanned his face, recognizing him as your target. Lieutenant Hank Anderson, you might have recognized him if he weren't sitting in a bar and ignoring his job as a lieutenant.

"Lieutenant Anderson, I'm Y/N an android sent by Cyberlife." Your voice was friendly and your words direct, there was no time to waste, but the lieutenant was completely ignoring you. You tried again.

"You were assigned a mission today. A Homicide involving an android." Still the lieutenant was more interested in his whiskey than you.

"Lieutenant Hank Anderson!" Your voice was firmer this time and it seemed to work. Hank finally looked up from his drink but he still didn't want to look at you. With an annoyed voice he finally spoke to you.

"Fuck off." Hank said, taking a sip of his whiskey.

"Sorry to disappoint you but I cannot do that. I have clear instructions that I must follow." Your voice didn't change, Hank wasn't making it easy for you.

"You know where you can stick your instructions? Hehe" Hank was laughing at his own snarky comment but that only confused you.

"No, where?" The genuine confusion in your question made Hank finally look at you with a more confused look than yours. He didn't say anything and turned around again, giving his drink his attention again.

Calculating approach

"How about I buy you a drink for the road?" ^ You slid some money to the bartender asking him to pour the same stuff for Hank again.

"Wonders of technology. Make it a double." Hank slid his glass up to the bartender and drank his new drink in one shot. You saw the lieutenant shudder from the intense taste of alcohol.

"A homicide you say?" Hank for the second time this evening looked at you. This time, he had his focus set on his work as a lieutenant.

The lieutenant showed you to his car and you followed. It was an old car that looked like it was about to fall apart any moment. The drive to the victim's home was the complete opposite of when you drove to Jimmy's bar. Instead of a quiet drive with the rain and wheels as the only sound, Hank was blasting metal music to the fullest volume. It was no problem for you audio processors yet you wondered how the Lieutenant hadn't gone deaf yet, if this was his daily drive to anywhere. You made a note of this observation.

"You stay in the car!" Hank ordered you, when you arrived at the destination.

"As you say lieutenant." ^ You agreed and yet after you heard the driver's door close you were conflicted.

Follow Lieutenant Hank Anderson

You got out of the car. It was still raining but that didn't bother you, yet you wondered why the Lieutenant didn't bring an umbrella with him. Reporters and curious civilians were standing in front of the tape that was closing off the house and the streets. Simply ignoring the people you made your way to the house only to be stopped at the tape by an android.

"Androids aren't allowed beyond this point." It said holding it's arm up, stopping you from entering.

"It's with me." Hanks voice saved you and the android let you through. As you approached Lieutenant Hank gave you a mad look.

"What in 'stay in the car' was not clear?" He asked you.

"Sorry Lieutenant but that was against my orders." You replied simply as if it was clear why you had left the car.

"You stay out of my way and don't touch anything, got it?"

"Yes, sir."

There was a man already waiting fr your arrival, he was an investigator, his name Ben Collins.

"I didn't knew you got yourself an Android." Ben said, giving Hank a mocking smile, he knew how much Hank hates Androids, so it was a suprise, to anyone who knows Hank, to see him with an Andoid.

"More like an annoying fly that follows me around." You ignored Hanks comment about you.

"By the way, Detective Summers arrived an hour earlier, uf you want to talk to him." Collins pointed at the back of the house, indicating that detective Summers was somewhere at the back.

Your LED flashed yellow as you processed what Ben said. The name was familiar to you as was the Lieutenants. Detective Summers or Connor Summers is a detective that was also assigned this case. You made a mental note to introduce yourself later. Hank turned around to look at you, he gave you a look that questioned why the fuck he is here, since a detective was already working on the case. You decided to ignore his glare and pretended to be innocent, as if you hadn't dragged him here. Ben Collins proceeded to give you a recap of the situation as you entered the house. Inside the house Hank complained about the smell. You couldn't smell anything but through analyzing the air you could tell that something had been dead for a long time. The house was in chaos. Nothing seemed to be in the right place and a dead man in the middle of the living room didn't make it better. The victims name was Carlos Ortiz, his criminal record made people think less empathetically about him. Aside from the obvious decaying body, above the victims head, was writing that said 'I AM ALIVE' in the Cyberlife sans. Obviously the work of an android as it was written perfectly.

"It's written in the Cyberlife sans. It was definitely the work of an android." You shared your observation.

"Shit, you got your own font now?" Hank asked, his tone gave away that he was more joking than actually asking.

Upon a closer analysis of the body you made a record. Carlos Ortiz was stabbed 28 times. His mouth had traces of red ice. A famous drug and he was holding something during his attack.

Recreate scene

Recreating the scene gave you an important hint that the attack didn't happen in the living room and the victim was trying to run away from his attacker from the kitchen. Before you could go into the kitchen you found a knife on the floor. It was covered in blood but there were no fingerprints. You touched the blood on the knife and licked it.

"The Fuck are you doing!" Hank saw you licking the blood and his face looked as if he was ready to let his dinner out.

"I'm analyzing the blood." You showed Hank the blood on your fingertips, as if it was normal.

"Right, just don't do it again." hank warned you, as he was trying to hold back.

"Yes, Sir."

The blood on the knife belonged to Carlos Ortiz, the victim. Giving you confirmation that he was killed with this knife. The kitchen obviously didn't look any better. There was a broken chair on the floor and a bat. Analyzing the bat gave you the information that the victim was the one using it and the blue blood on it indicated that he was beating an android. After more investigation, you made the conclusion that the attack had started in the kitchen. With that new information you moved out from the kitchen and farther back into the house. At the end of the corridor was the bathroom but you stopped at the entrance. There, in front of the shower, was a man crouching and inspecting something.

"Excuse me." Your voice was friendly and yet after hearing you the man jumped and turned around to look at you. He looked shocked and scared. He must have been deep in thought to get scared like that.

"Excuse me. I'm Y/N, an android sent by Cyberlife to help with this investigation." You gave the man a friendly smile, trying not to scare him any further. The man slowly calmed down as you could see from his heart rate.

He stood up from the floor now realizing that he was looking at an android. From the LED on your head and the Cyberlife uniform.

"I'm Detective Conner Summers." Connor wanted to give you his hand but then realized he was wearing dirty gloves and took his hand back to his side. Simple dirt wouldn't have minded you as an android but you didn't say anything.

"I look forward to working with you Detective Summers." You gave Connor a polite smile. Connor cheeks turned a slight pink and he looked away shyly.

"Me too." With one last look at you Connor had left the room, leaving you alone with the questions the bathroom brought with it.

There wasn't much, just as messy as the rest of the house but the most important part was the shower. The shower walls were covered in writing, the same as in the living room but this time it said 'rA9' and at the bottom stood a statue. The written didn't tell you anything, so you picked up the statue for further inspection. It was made out of clay and obviously hand made but there was nothing else that told you anything. There was nothing else to look at, so you went back into the living room. There you found Hank, leaning on a wall with, Connor next to him. They were talking about the android, that might have escaped only for Connor to dismiss the idea.

"I think I know what happened." Both men looked at you. Hank just looked bored and Connor was actually interested in what you had to say. The Lieutenant waved with his hand telling you to tell them what you have discovered.

You started telling them all about it, how the incident started in the kitchen, where the android got attacked by Carlos Ortiz with a bat and that the android started fighting back with the knife. The fight ended in the living room where the deviant killed the victim with a knife. Connor looked impressed at you while Hank agreed but wasn't satisfied yet. ^

"We still don't know where the deviant went." Hank said in a matter of fact. You might have successfully figured out what happened but you still don't know where the deviant is.

"We could ask the neighbors, maybe they saw something." Connor said trying to find a solution to your problem.

"That won't be necessary." You dismissed the idea.

Yet again both man looked at you, waiting for you to continue.

"The deviant got attacked and lost Thirium." You started but got interrupted very quickly.

"Thiri what now?" Hank asked.

"It's the blue blood that powers the androids bio components." This time it was who Connor answered. You nodded and gave Connor a small smile. He looked away again, avoiding eye contact. You just ignored his confusing behavior and continued.

"Yes. Thirium evaporates within hours and becomes invisible to the human eye but I'm able to see it."

"Aha, well then get on with it." The lieutenant ordered you.

You started looking around the living room. There was a trace of blue blood on the floor and following it made you arrive at the end of the corridor right in front of the bathroom. You looked at the wall next to you and noticed traces of a step ladder that isn't there anymore.

"It looks like a ladder was there before." You didn't notice but Connor was standing right behind you. He was looking over your shoulder at the same spot you were looking at. You nodded at his observation.

"It seems the deviant might have used the ladder." After those words both of you looked up and right there was a trap door into the attic.

"I'll go get something to get up there." Connor was faster than you and went into the kitchen to get a chair, the only one that was still intact. After protest from the lieutenant Connor came back with a wooden chair and placed it right under the trap door.

"Please let me. It would be safer in case the deviant is up there and decides to attack." You held Connor back before he could climb up the chair. He stepped aside and nodded at you.

" Just be careful." Connor sounded genuine and that made you even more curious about him. Why would a human be concerned about an Android? It's not that you could get hurt or die but you didn't question him and climbed up the chair. You opened the trap door and climbed up into the attic. Connor stepped up the chair but before he could climb up into the attic you stopped him once again.

"Please Detective, stay here." You crouched down to come face to face with Connor. He wanted to disagree but decided to leave it be.

"Fine, but I'm gonna stay here in case of anything." Connor said firmly.

"Alright." You put your attention back to the attic.

It was dark and the only light was coming from the far back window. You slowly moved forward, inspecting every corner. There was a curtain closing of half the room, the light from the back put a shadow of a silhouette on the curtain. You slowly moved towards it and yanked it open. No android but an old mannequin was sitting there. Halfway through the attic something moved. It was to dark to see anything but it was to big to have been a rat. You continued to move forward. At the far back next to the window you stopped. Right in front of you stood the deviant. He looked obviously scared, or he was intimidating the feeling.

"It-it wasn't my fault. Please, you have to let me go." The deviant tried to talk itself out of this.

"Detective, Lieutenant, it's here." You screamed. You heard movement and talking from the trap door. Connor jumped into the attic and got to your side. A police man followed and arrested the deviant.

You successfully found the deviant and captured it but that wasn't the end of your mission yet.
