Ā

It’s never been in Connor’s nature to talk about his feelings. When he was a little boy, he’d cry just like any other child, but the moment someone asked what was wrong he’d clam up. There’s no instinct in him that prompts him to share; his automatic response to emotional upheaval is to either go quiet and invisible or to get loud and distracting. In both situations, Connor does his best to turn the attention away from him. There have been moments where this unwillingness to talk about emotion has caused deep pain, both to himself and to the people he loves, but despite this, he just can’t bring himself to let the world in.Ā

In many ways, this makes Jesse the perfect complement to Connor. They can both be loud, but where Connor uses volume to distract, Jesse doesn’t shy away from the blunt truth. Jesse is brash and bold; he says it how it is before Connor has the chance to even try to distract him. Connor may have mastered the art of deflecting attention and getting away with emotional distance, but Jesse has mastered the art of reading Connor—and when these two masteries come head to head, Jesse always comes out on top. Connor can’t hide from Jesse. Jesse doesn’t let him.

It’s how Jesse became Connor’s caregiver, actually. Jesse knew Connor was an age regressor, and saw right through Connor’s claims that he didn’t want a caregiver. Connor told him that it would be too much work, that Jesse would get tired of taking care of Connor—and then told Jesse that he didn’t even want a caregiver anyway. But Jesse knows his best friend, and he saw right through Connor’s tough act. He knew that deep down, Connor wanted a caregiver more than anything, but was too afraid to show that vulnerability to anyone, lest it come back to bite him. So Jesse simply decided that he was Connor’s caregiver, and soon after, Connor finally believed that his best friend did actually want to take care of him.Ā

This is how a lot of things go with them. Connor is a bit more free with showing his emotions when he’s regressed, but not by much. Jesse still has to drag his feelings out of him like he’s pulling teeth. Often, it seems like Connor doesn’t even fully know how he’s feeling, like his own brain even hides its emotions from its owner. These are moments when Jesse is that much more grateful he can read Connor so well. After all, without his ability to talk Connor down from a meltdown, they would both spend an extensive amount of time unhappy.Ā

But it doesn’t surprise Jesse that he complements Connor so well. After all, isn’t that what best friends are supposed to do? Fill in the gaps of your own weaknesses, so that together you can make each other stronger? Even if Connor likes to claim that he doesn’t make Jesse stronger in any way, Jesse knows the truth. He may help Connor with emotional regulation, but Connor motivates Jesse more than Jesse could ever motivate himself. Connor helps remind Jesse to care for others and contemplate how his actions impact those around him. Connor even helps Jesse improve his ability to hold his tongue.Ā

They balance each other. It’s perfect. They’re two peas in a pod, and it’s enough for them. But just because something feels so perfect doesn’t mean it can’t become more perfect. Connor is perfectly content with Jesse and Jesse alone when he’s in littlespace. But that doesn’t mean having other little friends couldn’t change his life for the better. It’s all about growth; that’s what Jesse and Connor are always reminding each other. And part of that growth means letting good people really see you, and then letting those people care for you.

Ever since it became public knowledge that there are other littles in NASCAR, Jesse has been waiting for Connor to bring it up. He thinks it would be good for Connor to make friends with them, but he also knows how important it is for Connor to make that decision himself, so that he doesn’t feel pressured. But Connor’s been oddly quiet ever since Austin Cindric first opened up about age regression. It’s the exact opposite of the reaction Jesse expected; he thought Connor would feel comforted to know that other drivers were also age regressors. But Connor hasn’t said anything, and that’s not normal. Connor doesn’t always talk about his feelings, but he does like to talk about everything else. So Jesse knows he has to do something when it’s been weeks and Connor has gone oddly quiet.

Jesse brings it up on an otherwise normal afternoon. They’re in his camper, Jesse sitting on the couch studying race data while Connor is sprawled out on the rug with his Disney Polly Pockets, the plastic dresses worn and well-loved. Jesse’d found them in the attic of his parent’s house, tucked away in a box of Vivian’s old toys. He’d grabbed plenty of his own old toys, too, but he didn’t know what would catch Connor’s interest, so he’d made sure to pack the old canvas bag he’d brought full to the brim. And his instincts turned out to be right, because Connor latched onto the Disney Polly Pockets immediately. Well, it took him a few days to believe Jesse that they were for boys, too. But once he got over that initial hump, they quickly became some of his favorites.Ā

Connor’s got some of the dolls set up in a semicircle, all turned towards a little stage he’s made out of a plastic storage bin that Jesse is pretty sure was holding markers earlier today, but he’ll deal with figuring out where Connor dumped the markers later. Connor has the other dolls dressed up in their fanciest outfits, performing some kind of dance recital for the little audience. He’s humming under his breath, a lilting thing that’s vaguely reminiscent of the classical music ballerinas dance to. Jesse watches him with a smile, heart swelling as he sits there, content to watch Connor play in his own little world. But he also desperately wants to know what Connor’s thoughts are on talking with the other little NASCAR drivers, and he knows that Connor will just try to tough it out if he asks while the young man is big. So he sets his computer down and slides himself onto the floor next to Connor, who glances at him with a bashful smile before continuing his play.Ā

ā€œHey, Connor, buddy,ā€ Jesse says, rubbing his little one's back soothingly. ā€œCan I ask you something?ā€ Connor nods, turning to his caregiver with a grin that crinkles his eyes. Jesse can’t help but boop the boy’s nose playfully, overcome by how cute he is. He gets a harmless swat for that, accompanied by a pout. ā€œSorry, bud, I couldn’t resist.ā€

ā€œThat’s silly,ā€ Connor giggles. ā€œWhat’s your que’shon?ā€Ā

ā€œI was wondering if you wanted to talk to some of the NASCAR drivers that are also age regressors. To see if they might want to have a playdate or something like that.ā€ Jesse tries to emphasize that it’s just a suggestion. He would never force Connor to reveal his status as an age regressor to anyone, and he would never force Connor to do something he didn’t want to do. ā€œIt’s your choice completely. I just wanted to know if it was something you were interested in.ā€

Connor immediately gets a distant look in his eyes. Jesse feels his pulse spike, mind immediately jumping to panic, but he knows that sometimes, Connor has to retreat into his mind in order to understand his own feelings or thoughts about things. He can’t focus on the thoughts unless he’s deep in them, because otherwise the noise of life around him messes with the signals. He’s had to learn this about Connor; he’s had to learn that panicking will only make it worse (and will probably leave Connor feeling guilty for something that isn’t his fault). Of course, he’d already been learning this slowly just by being Connor’s best friend. But his window into Connor’s brain and emotions expanded greatly when he became the boy’s caregiver.Ā

ā€œI don’ know,ā€ Connor finally mumbles after a few minutes of tense silence, where Jesse does his best not to fidget so Connor knows he isn’t being rushed. Of course, deep down Jesse would love to have a definitive answer, but he’s also proud of Connor for being willing to admit that he’s unsure—it’s certainly not what he used to do. He’s been trying to convince Connor that it’s okay to not always have a yes or no answer. Maybe this is a subtle sign that it’s working.Ā

ā€œThat’s perfectly fine, buddy. Remember, ā€˜I don’t know’ is a perfectly valid answer.ā€ Connor acknowledges Jesse with a nod, a grin on his face that seems more of a placeholder than anything. ā€œDo you think you could give it some thought at some point? There’s no rush. I just want to be able to help you out, and if this would be helpful to you, I want to make it a reality.ā€Ā

ā€œYeah, I’ll think ā€˜bout it,ā€ Connor agrees. ā€œCan I p’ay wif my p’incesses now, d’ough?ā€Ā

ā€œOf course, love.ā€ The moment he gets permission, Connor is engrossed with his toys again, and Jesse migrates back to the couch. Connor’s lisp is slightly more prominent than it was at the beginning of the conversation, which means he’s probably slipped a bit younger because of the stress the conversation caused. Jesse didn’t mean to stress his little one out, but it makes sense, since they were discussing something so vulnerable. And Jesse never minds taking care of Connor, no matter what age he is. Still, he makes a mental note to get out the plastic plates and a sippy cup for dinner—Connor likely won’t have the coordination needed to use regular dinnerware.

Thankfully, Connor never refuses a chance to use his Rapunzel sippy cup. Jesse smiles as he heads to the kitchenette, keeping an eye on Connor as he scrubs the decorated purple cup with care. Once it’s sparkly clean, he leaves it on the drying rack so it will be ready for Connor at dinnertime.Ā

It’s the little things that he loves most about being a caregiver. Specifically, getting to make sure all the little things line up perfectly for his little one. Which means that tonight, Jesse is going to cuddle his little one and put on his favorite movie and tuck him in, all cozy and warm. Tomorrow, they can worry more about the whole other little drivers thing. Tonight, Jesse is just going to make sure Connor knows how loved he is.

Hey Austin! It’s Jesse Love. I’m reaching out because Connor wanted to talk to you about something privately, but needs some emotional support so I’d be there, too.

Is there a chance the three of us could find someplace private to meet up this weekend so he could talk to you?

Ā

Austin

Hey Jesse, it’s good to hear from you

Yeah that works for me, if you want you guys could come to my Airstream. It’ll be empty except for us. Would Friday after practice work?

Ā

Jesse

Yeah that sounds good, and your Airstream works great! See you then!

Ā

Austin

Yup, talk to you then

Ā

Jesse is double-checking his pockets to make sure Connor’s pacifier and lovey are tucked safely within when Connor gets up from the couch and sprints to the bathroom for the third time in fifteen minutes.Ā

ā€œGotta pee!ā€ he calls behind him, panic in his voice as the bathroom door thuds closed. Jesse frowns, knowing that Connor doesn’t truly need to go to the bathroom again, but his body is sending him those cues because of his nerves. In reality, it would be better if Jesse put his foot down and told Connor that they should just head to Austin’s Airstream a bit early, but he knows that Connor’s mood is fragile right now, and he doesn’t want to cause a meltdown right before an emotionally taxing experience. So he keeps his mouth shut, simply smiling at his little when the boy exits the bathroom a few minutes later, crouching down to fix his shoelaces, which are knotted in an odd tangle that only a regressed Connor could create.Ā

ā€œDo you want a pull-up, just for safety?ā€ he asks, internally chuckling when Connor pouts at the suggestion.

ā€œNot a baby today,ā€ he whines.Ā

ā€œI know, but it looked like you were having to go to the bathroom a lot. I just didn’t want you to feel nervous about needing to go to the bathroom.ā€Ā

ā€œI’m t’ree, Jesse!ā€ Connor groans again. ā€œT’ree-year-olds don’t need pull-ups!ā€Ā

ā€œSome three-year-olds use pull-ups, bud. There’s no wrong age to have a bit of extra comfort and security. But you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. I just wanted to ask you in case you did want it.ā€Ā

ā€œDon’ wan’ it,ā€ Connor scowls, and Jesse chuckles.

ā€œOh, I can tell, bud, don’t worry.ā€ Connor doesn’t dignify that with a response, simply grabbing Jesse’s hand and tugging him up from his knees.Ā

ā€œTime to go,ā€ he mumbles, somewhat grumpily, and Jesse grips his shoulders, turning the pouting boy to face him.

ā€œHey, bud, please don’t be mad at me. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.ā€ Connor sighs, but relaxes a bit, lacing his fingers with Jesse’s instead of just pulling him along like a dog on a leash.Ā

ā€œNot mad. Jus’ wan’ to do this ā€˜cause ā€˜m nervous.ā€Ā

ā€œEverything is going to work out, I promise.ā€Ā

Jesse’s reassurance is enough to give Connor a boost of confidence, and then he’s tugging his caregiver out the door of his camper. Jesse chuckles as he follows behind Connor diligently, meandering their way through the campers until they reach Austin’s Airstream. Connor steps up to the door and knocks politely, glancing at Jesse to make sure he’s still there. Jesse steps closer to Connor as they wait for Austin to answer, rubbing a hand along the little’s back soothingly.Ā

The Airstream door swings open to reveal Austin’s friendly face, its customary smile stretched from cheek to cheek.Ā

ā€œHey guys, right on time! Come on in.ā€ Jesse follows Connor into the Airstream, the lock clicking behind them as Austin closes the door. It’s a nice camper, definitely nicer than Jesse’s, at least, and it’s obviously well lived-in. The little kitchenette has a pile of dishes soaking in the sink, a few of which are brightly colored plastic. There’s a small bin of toys next to the couch, organized neatly and bearing a cute tag with Austin’s name on it. Connor is looking around, taking it all in, his eyebrows knitting together when he notices the plethora of crayon drawings stuck to the fridge with magnets. Maybe he didn’t expect Austin’s Airstream to have so much obvious evidence of his age regression, but Jesse isn’t surprised—after all, Austin is the first driver to have told the world about being an age regressor. It doesn’t seem like the kind of thing he likes to keep hidden.

ā€œSo, you had something you wanted to talk to me about?ā€ Austin asks, pulling Connor out of his visual exploration. ā€œWe can sit at the kitchen table or on the couch, whichever is easier for you.ā€ Jesse stays silent, letting Connor choose, and after a few glances back and forth at the options, Connor motions to the couch, plopping down on the cushions with an oof. Jesse opens his mouth to chide Connor, to tell him to respect other people’s furniture, but restrains himself, knowing that would just make this whole conversation harder for Connor. He settles next to Connor on the sofa, Austin sinking into an armchair near them so he can see their faces.

Connor glances at Jesse for one last encouraging look, and Jesse squeezed his shoulder affectionately.Ā

ā€œI’m right here, bud. You can do it.ā€ Connor took a deep breath and turned back to Austin.Ā

ā€œI’m an age regressor, and Jesse’s my caregiver.ā€ This statement is directed at Austin’s chest, but Connor quickly glances up at Austin before continuing. ā€œI don’t have any other littles to interact with. Jesse suggested I talk to you guys about it now that you’ve publicly shared about your age regression, but I wanted to start smaller by only talking to one of you first.ā€Ā

Connor leans back on the couch, having momentarily used up all of his courage. After a few seconds of silence, Austin looks up at Connor, intentionally making eye contact to say,

ā€œThank you for sharing that with me, Connor. I know firsthand how scary it can be to talk about your age regression. I’m honored that you felt safe enough to share with me.ā€ Connor just nods, still a bit too overwhelmed for words, one of his legs bouncing rapidly with nervous energy.Ā

ā€œNow that you’ve shared that with me, is there anything you want or need from me? Do you want me to help you tell my brothers, or were you just wanting to be friends with me for now? Did you just want to tell someone about it, or were you hoping to have other littles to spend time with while small?ā€ Austin remains calm while asking these questions, a steady presence for Connor to model his breathing after.Ā

ā€œUm, um, I’m not sure,ā€ Connor mumbles, subconsciously beginning to pick at his cuticles as nerves hit him again. Jesse roots around in his pocket for the fidget he’d stashed there earlier, handing the small Pop-It to Connor when he finds it. The boy takes the fidget with a sheepish grin before turning back to Austin. ā€œI didn’t really have a plan with all of this. I just wanted to tell someone.ā€ Austin nods, and opens his mouth to reply, but Connor quickly adds, ā€œBut I do want friends. In littlespace. It’s really lonely without any.ā€Ā

Connor glances at Jesse and backtracks, ā€œI like being with Jesse! He’s good! But sometimes I do want little friends.ā€Ā

ā€œI’m not offended, bubs,ā€ Jesse reassures him, rubbing his back soothingly. Connor leans into the touch infinitesimally before turning back to Austin.Ā

ā€œSo it sounds like you do want other littles to spend time with, yes?ā€ Austin checks. Connor nods. ā€œAlright, did you want me to keep this to myself for now, or did you want to become friends with my brothers, too?ā€ Connor fidgets more aggressively for a few seconds, the Pop-It making very pronounced pops, but then takes a deep breath and says,

ā€œI want to be friends with your brothers, too.ā€ Austin grins, one of his hands flapping for a few moments before he verbally responds.

ā€œI’m glad. I think they will all enjoy being your friend. And I don’t think any of us would pass up the opportunity for another playmate.ā€ Connor also seems encouraged by this, which lightens Jesse’s heart a bit. Deep down, he had still been worried that Connor was going to draw back and isolate because it felt safer, so seeing his little excited to befriend others makes his heart swell.Ā

The three young men spend the next few minutes setting up a time for Connor to meet with Austin’s brothers and tell them about being little before Jesse has to go get ready for qualifying. Austin offers for Connor to stay with him for longer, but Connor says he’d rather spend more time with his caregiver. Jesse won’t lie and say it doesn’t feel good to be chosen like that. Austin doesn’t mind, walking them to the door and wishing them a good rest of their afternoon.Ā

Jesse can tell it went well in Connor’s book when the boy skips on their way back to Jesse’s motorhome, tugging his caregiver along with a gleeful smile on his face. He can’t help but mirror Connor’s smile, relieved that everything worked out how he’d hoped—maybe even better than he’d hoped.Ā

As Jesse gets ready for qualifying, Connor yaps away, pulling out toys to play with while he watches Jesse on the tv. Jesse watches Connor get lost in a story he’s creating with his princess Polly Pockets and knows that everything is going to turn out alright.

Ā

Ā

It isn’t exactly in the plan for Connor to get inducted into their circle of brothers so quickly, but when things are meant to be, plans don’t end up mattering all that much. It’s Connor’s first time hanging out with all of the brothers while little after telling them about his age regression, and even though he’s nervous, he’s also really, really excited. They all meet in Alex’s camper, and Connor is immediately slipping the moment he sees Alex’s dogs. He’s giggling and cooing at them, letting them lick his face, and Jesse knows he’ll have to bribe Connor into letting him wipe his face down after this, but it’s worth it to hear his shrieks of unbridled, uncontainable joy.Ā

Ā

Once everyone has arrived, they start regressing quite quickly, the proximity signalling to all of the littles that it’s time to be small. It’s adorable, truly—Jesse can understand now why there are fights between the caregivers about who gets to watch them all. Connor fits right in, getting pulled into an epic Hot Wheels race with Ryan and Chase before deciding to sit with Austin for a little while to regulate.Ā

Ā

It starts when Ryan begins getting possessive over Connor, annoyed that Austin ā€œisn’t sharing him.ā€ Of course, Austin calmly and softly points out that Connor chose to come play with him, but Ryan isn’t having it. He storms over to the table where Austin and Connor are sitting and loudly whines,Ā

Ā

ā€œBut Connor’s my li’l brudder, too!ā€ Everyone freezes, looking over at Ryan, who doesn’t seem to have realized exactly what he’s said. Jesse is worried that Connor will be overwhelmed by such a blunt, firm statement that hasn’t been discussed at all, but he should really give the boy more credit. Connor knows what he wants, even if he’s not always the best at sharing those thoughts.

Ā

ā€œYou want…me…brudder?ā€ he asks, looking up at Ryan with a nervous but hopeful expression. Jesse feels both pride and pain in this moment—pride that Connor was willing to ask, pain that he seemed so surprised someone would want to be his brother.

Ā

ā€œYes! You are my li’l brudder,ā€ Ryan proclaims, and Connor’s face crumples. Jesse’s heart immediately pangs, and he has to stop himself from leaping to his feet, knowing that Connor’s tears don’t necessarily mean he’s sad. Connor tends to cry whenever he feels overwhelmed, whether with good or bad emotion. Sure enough, Connor tumbles out of his chair and runs into Jesse’s arms, burying his face in his caregiver’s chest as he sobs,

Ā

ā€œDey wan’ me, Jesse. Dey wan’ me to be a brudder. I wan’ed to be a brudder!ā€ Jesse internally sighs in relief that these are tears caused by overwhelming joy, not sadness, but externally he just wraps Connor in his arms and shushes him soothingly.Ā

Ā

ā€œI know, bud, lots of big emotions. It’s okay, get it out.ā€ After a few moments, Connor has lapsed to sniffling, turning back towards the other littles with red eyes and a rosy blush on his cheeks.

Ā

ā€œSorry,ā€ he says wetly. ā€œI have lots of ā€˜motions and it makes me cw’y sometimes.ā€Ā

Ā

ā€œIt’s okay,ā€ Ryan immediately assures him, rushing over to Connor but stopping right before he breaches the other little’s personal space. ā€œI just t’ought I made you uh-set and got scared.ā€Ā

Ā

ā€œNo, not uh-set,ā€ Connor reassures Ryan. ā€œJust ā€˜eally happy and it oh-flowed out of my eyes.ā€ Ryan’s relieved grin is joined by Jesse’s, and their smiles are mirrored on the faces of the other brothers.Ā

Ā

The rest of the evening is spent in similar fashion, but with the added nuance of the littles constantly calling each other ā€œbrother.ā€ Jesse’s face hurts from how much he’s smiling, but he can’t help it when he sees the joy that positively exudes from Connor while he plays with his newfound brothers.Ā

Ā

And when Connor asks Jesse for his pacifier, fully embracing his little side in the presence of the other regressors, Jesse knows that being around the others is doing something for Connor that he’d hasn’t been able to do alone: proving to Connor that he’s safe, treasured, and loved when he’s big and when he’s little.

Ā

Bubba Wallace added Jesse Love.

Ā

Bubba

Alright guys, just added Jesse to the group so he can communicate with all of us

Introduce yourselves and tell him who you’re caregiver for, yeah?

I’m Bubba, and I’m Chase’s caregiver. I’m also kind of Ryan’s caregiver, though it’s not really official, so it’s kind of a halfway thing.

Ā

Gianna

I’m Gianna, Ryan’s wife! And also his caregiver :)Ā

Ā

Joey

It’s Joey Logano. Caregiver to Ryan and Austin. I have another little as well that isn’t brothers with everyone else,

but I’m going to protect their privacy and let them share their identity with you if/when they’re ready.

Ā

Brad

Hey Jesse! Glad to have you in here. It’s Brad, and I’m also caregiver to Ryan and Austin. I really love babysitting all of the brothers though.

Ā

Chloe

I’m Chloe Henderson, Alex’s fiance! It’s a bit different for me; I’m not really Alex’s caregiver because he regresses old enough that he doesn’t need one in the same sense,

but I am the closest thing he has to one, and spend a lot of time with him while regressed, and I also help him babysit when he’s caregiving!

So these folks were nice enough to include me.

Ā

Jesse

Woah guys, thanks for adding me! This is really nice, I’ve never been able to talk to other caregivers before.

Connor and I just kind of stumbled through this all by ourselves, haha.

I’m excited to get to know all of you, and I also would love to babysit if need be, though I know it’s a bit more complicated with me since I’m quite a bit younger!

Ā

Brad

Hey, no worries, Jesse

A caregiver’s a caregiver

It doesn’t matter how old you are. But I appreciate your openness to talking with us about it and hearing advice.

And you’re always welcome to give us advice, too.Ā

Ā

Joey

Yeah, I have a lot of respect for you, Jesse. You obviously have helped Connor feel safe enough to regress with you, and the fact that you figured that out on your own is impressive.Ā

Ā

Jesse

Aw well, it’s partially selfish; caregiving is really helpful to me in the same way regressing is helpful to Connor

Ā

Bubba

I think that’s how it is for most of us tbh, so you’re not alone there

Ā

Jesse

Thanks! I really appreciate this. And I really appreciate how you all have welcomed Connor with open arms.

He’s really struggled to do that final bit of letting go and feeling guilt-free about regressing, but I think he’s getting there now, seeing everyone be so normal and unashamed about it.

It makes me really happy to see him thrive like that.

Ā

Gianna

Aw of course Jesse! We are happy to see him thrive, too.Ā

Ā

Brad

You’re both part of the family now, and we take care of our own :)Ā

You tell Connor that Uncle Brad said goodnight, okay?

Ā

Jesse

Haha, I will

Okay, he told me to tell you all to have sweet dreams

Ā

Gianna

Oh he’s just adorable, I can’t

Thank you, Connor (and Jesse)

Ā

Jesse

No, thank YOU

Seriously

Ā

Bubba

Always, Jesse

Always
