Chapter 1: Prologue: The Pearl Who Loved Her Sea

Chapter Text

Long, long ago, when the world was younger and the stars still listened to the whispers of the sea, the mermaids of the deep and the people of the land lived in peace.

They traded treasures, shared stories, and watched the tides together, trusting one another across the shore.

Deep beneath the waves lay the mermaids’ kingdom called Brightmere.

Known as the Jewel of the Sea, it shimmered in the darkest depths, its towers and halls shaped from coral, glowing softly like moonlight beneath the water.

Some said it shone so brightly that it rivaled the moon itself.

Among the merfolk lived the youngest princess, beloved by all who knew her—mermaids and sea creatures alike.

She was gentle, curious, and kind, and because of her warm heart, she was called Brightmere’s Darling Little Light.

Each night, when the sea grew quiet and the moon rose high, the princess would swim to the surface to gaze upon the moonlit sky.

She loved the way its silver light danced upon the gentle waves.

But one night, during one of her secret visits, pirates captured her and carried her far away from the sea she loved.

Brightmere mourned her disappearance, and the princess mourned her home.

Yet even in sorrow, fate placed kindness in her path.

Aboard the ship, she met a young lord—a gentle soul with warm eyes and a kind heart.

Over many days, they spoke of their worlds, their dreams, and their fears, and slowly, a deep bond formed between them.

Moved by love and compassion, the young lord helped her escape, returning her safely to the sea.

When the pirate captain discovered what he had done, he cast the young lord from the ship, abandoning him in a small boat during a raging storm.

The waves grew violent, the wind howled, and his vessel capsized, leaving him alone in the dark sea.

Just as his strength was about to fail, the mermaid princess found him.

She carried him through the depths and brought him to Brightmere, where he rested and healed among the glowing halls of the underwater kingdom.

There, they spent many peaceful days together—walking through coral gardens and watching schools of silver fish drift like stars through the water.

Their bond grew deeper, gentler, and stronger with each passing day.

At last, the time had come for the young lord to return to the land.

On the night before his departure, the princess gave him her pearl amulet, a symbol of her love and a way for him to one day find her again.

In return, he gave her his family dagger, a symbol of protection and a token of his everlasting devotion.

Beneath the bright moonlight, they promised that when they met again under its light, they would spend the rest of their days together.

With a final kiss to seal their vow, he departed into the night.

For many moons, the princess waited.

Each night, she returned to the surface, gazing upon the horizon, hoping to see his ship beneath the moon’s glow.

Her longing grew with every passing tide.

Then, one peaceful day, the pirates returned.

They attacked Brightmere, capturing and injuring many mermaids.

The princess fought bravely to defend her home, but the pirate captain overpowered her.

As he stood over her in triumph, she saw a familiar gleam in his hand and gasped in realization—it was her pearl amulet.

With cruel delight, he mocked her, claiming that the young lord had betrayed her, surrendering the pearl.

Then, the captain used its magic to find Brightmere’s location.

Upon hearing this, her heart shattered into a million pieces.

In her despair, she faltered, and the captain raised his blade.

But before it could strike her, someone leapt between them.

It was the young lord.

Gravely wounded and barely standing, he bravely faced the captain, who stared at him in disbelief.

Before the captain could speak, shouts and explosions echoed through the water—the young lord’s allies had arrived.

In the chaos that followed, the young lord struck down the confused captain with one final lunge, ending the battle.

But victory came at a terrible cost.

Mortally wounded, the young lord retrieved the pearl amulet from the captain’s lifeless hand and returned it to the princess before collapsing into her arms.

Through her tears, she asked why he had protected her if he had betrayed her.

With his final breath, he told her the truth: he had been imprisoned, and the amulet had been stolen from him.

He had never betrayed her.

He apologized for failing to keep his promise and declared his love one last time before his life faded away.

Unable to bear a world without him, the princess, filled with grief, took the dagger he had given her and pierced her heart, choosing to follow him beyond sea and sky.

The battle left the waters filled with wreckage and grief.

Brightmere, once the Jewel of the Sea, became a graveyard of ships, its radiant halls now dimmed with sorrow.

From that day forward, the mermaids and the people of the land chose to live apart, determined never to let such a tragedy happen again.
