Discussion: Why I think Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander are in a secret relationship and have been for years. 

So, with the All-Star game coming up this weekend, and since my initial realization about these two started with the 2017 All-Star game, I figured now would be the perfect time to lay all the evidence out there. I know it sounds crazy, and when you look at all the pieces of the puzzle separately, I totally agree, but when everything is put together, it becomes kind of hard to ignore. I know a small minority have RPF’ed them for years, it’s inevitable with the rivals the league presents them as, but just…hear me out:

• I was at the 2017 All-Star game in Tampa. Their chemistry was insane. And not like a, ‘oh, we’re just really good hockey players’ kind of way. They moved together like they’d been playing with each other for years. It was incredible to watch. And when Ilya kissed Shane’s cheek after he scored a goal off of Ilya’s assist? The way they smiled at each other? The look. It was there, and I knew then. There was no denying it. 

• Shortly after that game, it was confirmed that Shane Hollander and Rose Landry had broken up. He hasn’t been linked with anyone since then, but they remain good friends and have been seen hanging out together multiple times. 

• April 2017: Shane Hollander gets a concussion and suffers a broken collarbone after getting hit by Cliff Marlow. After that hit, Ilya stayed on the ice, hovering just outside where the medics were. You can see from the footage that he repeatedly asks if Shane is okay, and his expression looks really devastated. All of Shane’s teammates move away. All of them. But Ilya stayed. 

• July 2017: Ilya is spotted in the Ottawa airport. It never gained any traction because the person who saw him didn’t take a photo, but they were certain it was him. Why would he be in Ottawa in July? Who else was in Ottawa in July for the summer with his parents? Shane Hollander. 

• Not much happened for the next year until Ilya signed with Ottawa. There was a lot of discussion about his possible motives for doing this. For signing with a team that had zero chance of winning any cups. Ilya said he was ready for a new challenge, and I can believe that, but if he were in, say, a relationship with Shane Hollander, the move makes even more sense. Boston is nearly five hours from Montreal. Ottawa is only two, and there’s no border to cross. 

• November 2018: The Irina Foundation. This is what really sealed it for me. Three months after moving to Ottawa, Ilya and his supposed rival start a charity together that is to be run by Shane’s mother. It’s a wonderful idea that helps so many people, and it also gives them an excuse to be seen together where no one really questions it. Plus, again, the way they looked at each other at the press conference where they announced the foundation? They both had literal hearts in their eyes, especially Shane when Ilya told the story of what happened to his mother. You can’t deny there’s something there.

• They now run hockey camps together each summer, and have been spotted out and about with other coaches for dinners, and were also seen together at a Fabian Salah concert last summer. 

• A reporter who spoke with Shane in Montreal at one of the camps said that Ilya fired a puck at them while he was speaking with Shane. It hit the glass and scared them both. 

• The ESPN documentary, where they talked at length about each other, you could tell they were holding back and choosing their words carefully.

• Every time they play against each other, they always meet at the end and shake hands at center ice. Not something that’s regularly done between team captains in the regular season.

• Several times in the past few months, Ilya hasn’t flown back with the team when they’ve played the Voyageurs. 

• When asked recently if he hangs out with the team on days off, Evan Dykstra mentioned he does, and when the reporter asked if that included Ilya, he looked a little panicked before he said, “Nah, Rozy’s always off doing his own thing.” 

• Neither of them is seen in public often unless it’s for team-sponsored outings 

But all this aside, I think one of the most important things to realize is that since 2017, neither of them has been seen or romantically linked with anyone. It might not seem like much when it comes to Shane, and there have been rumors about his sexuality for years, but Ilya was notorious in Boston. He was photographed with different women all the time, but he isn't anymore, and supposedly, he spends his days off doing his own thing that no one ever sees. 

Neither of them is seen in public often anymore unless it’s for team-sponsored things, which could mean they just really want to lead private lives, but there was a switch somewhere in there that has to be explained by something. 

And I think that ‘something’ is that they’re together and have been for years. I could go on and on about images of them playing against each other, and the looks they give, but it’s all right there. I get why they wouldn’t announce it, but I hope someday they feel like they’re able to.

I can admit that a lot of this is weird. I still will never understand why Rozanov signed with Ottawa, but the league pit them against each other for years. I don’t think it’s that far-fetched to think they said fuck that and have just become genuine friends over the decade plus they’ve been playing.

There are facts in all of your points, but then you fill them with conjecture and you totally lose me. You can’t prove Ilya moved to Ottawa for Shane. You can’t prove he’s not around on his days off because he’s with Shane. You can’t prove they wanted to say more in the documentary. I get that you want this to be true, but that doesn’t make it so.

I mean, the Shane Hollander is gay rumors have been around forever, and with as much as Rozanov seemed to enjoy hooking up with people, I don’t think it’s that much of a leap to consider he might be bi. Plus, Shane is gorgeous. Anyone with eyes should want that. 

brokebloke I can definitely see it happening as a one-off or something. Have you seen them do stretches before the games? I have zero doubt those two could fuck. But as a long-term thing, where they have to move countries and create charities just to be with each other? I don’t see that at all.

@realshanehollander This morning @ilyarozanov81 and I received news that photos of us in an intimate moment during last weekend’s All-Star Game were going to be released later today. These photos were taken for the sole purpose of invading our privacy and with the intention to forcibly out us. We hope you will not engage in spreading them further. 

Ilya and I have been in a committed and romantic relationship for several years now. We have worked very hard to keep our professional and personal lives separate and hope that that effort is evident in our playing and commitment to our teams.

We made the decision some time ago to slowly come out to our closest family and friends, and have enjoyed the time and freedom we’ve had to be ourselves around those we love. And while we had planned on sharing our relationship with the world soon, only having a few hours to decide how to do that was less than ideal. 

We’re so grateful to our family and friends who were willing to share some of what they love about our relationship with you. We hope that by giving you so many candid moments and glimpses into our lives, we are more able to control the narrative around ourselves while also lessening the power of the images that were intended only to harm the most precious thing in our lives.

Ilya and I plan to continue playing the sport we love to the best of our ability, and we hope that you will continue on this journey with us together.

Shane: Yeah, that’s been difficult, and I’m sure you can draw conclusions from the people who posted about us and those who didn’t where our biggest support system lies within the hockey world. All we’ve ever wanted is to play hockey and love each other; it’s what we’ve been doing for years, so hopefully we can do both again soon. 

Ilya: But eitherway, we do it together, yes? 

[They look at each other, and the obvious tension in Shane’s shoulders relaxes as Ilya smiles at him hopefully. Shane’s smile grows, and Ilya leans forward and kisses the tip of his nose, causing it to scrunch up in as he leans forward himself to quickly capture Ilya’s mouth in a brief kiss.]

Shane: Together, yeah.

Hockey Camps Run by Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov Add Extra Week in Ottawa After Demand Surges

The Irina Foundation announced on Wednesday that an additional week of the Game Changer Hockey Camp would be held in Ottawa later this month. 

Demand reportedly surged after Shane Hollander signed with the Ottawa Centaurs and married Centaurs’ star centre Ilya Rozanov a week later. The two are some of the most successful players in NHL history, with four Stanley Cups between them and numerous other awards, including a league MVP win for both. 

The camps are designed for young players of all abilities, and the proceeds go toward assisting various mental health organizations in Canada and the northern US. In addition to the camp held in Ottawa, another is held yearly in Montreal. 

I spoke with Shane Hollander on a phone call yesterday and asked if he still planned to hold a camp in Montreal after this year, considering his newly cemented place on Ottawa’s roster. 

“Just because many of my former teammates aren’t accepting and inclusive doesn’t mean I can’t be. We have no plans to move the camp from Montreal and are hoping to expand to other cities in the next couple of years.”
