Why Hurricanes Are Named After People

Summary:

Title Shamelessly stolen from an amazing tumblr post, google "tumblr post hurricanes are named after people" and go to images, I'm certain you'll find it.

Short oneshot of Nightmare missing Dream and feeling guilty for loving new people. Was supposed to be fully focused on that "old flame" but ended up being pretty fluffy instead.

TW: Vague Dreammare

Work Text:

It’d been centuries since this feeling burrowed into his rotten soul. Twisting and crawling through his bones, clawing at his sanity and clouding his vision.

The older creature still sat nestled in his soul, whining out every time he battled. Like a pet trying to run home to its owner, unaware it’d been abandoned. Worse. They’d drifted apart.

Maybe there was blame to throw, but truth be told, their days had grown monotonous before his corruption. A tired peck on the cheek and a promise of fresh bread for dinner. They saw each other when they woke up, and often, only then. He didn’t even wake when they curled around him.

The curse of wisdom. Scorching his mind with what if’s and fantasy.

It’d been centuries. And he still couldn’t move on.

Every thunderstorm, he sat awake. Pulling a pillow close to his side, stretching his senses across the multiverse to see if they were alright.

Their latest battles proved they were. The mortal they acquired attached to their side, their aura flowering like dandelions. Rooting jealously in his soul.

And just like a weed, it rooted unwanted feelings. Equating harmless hugs to senseless longing. It left him stamping out anything that dared grow.

His boys had known him too long, knew him to well, only smirking at his cold refusals.

They let him stew, not as a wine but a hot chocolate. Watched over carefully and stirred from boiling over. Sprinkled in chips of affection until he mellowed in their sweetness.

It burrows next to the older creature, cuddling close to the old flame.

Yet, each encounter is different. So distinctly them, that even the older creature feels tended to. The stronger flame encircling the old, not overtaking. Breathing life into his corrupted soul.

The feeling blooms his vision, inspires him, tickles at his bones until he’s a giggling mess. Burrowed deep into his rotten soul.

Notes:

I really like the idea of Nightmare and or Dream struggling to move on from each other even centuries later. BUT I love the idea of bad sans poly picking up on this and letting simple things like cuddling--Nightmare used to curl up in Dream's arms--being slightly different--letting him curl up in their arms, but having his arms around their neck or clasped together in front of them. So he can get what he wants without feeling longing for the old or guilty for rewriting it.

Think mostly I really like people being allowed to still love exes, even if it didn't work out. And new partners being ok with not overwriting the connection, because that's their thing. (def a hot take not for everyone, I just hate toxic ex culture where exes cant be friends anymore lol)
