Work Text:
Wednesday 29th April.
Most people would assume it's an average day, everyone goes to work and school like normal.
Though today,, is Chuuya's birthday!
Waking up super early, Dazai could barely sleep, he really wanted to make sure Chuuya had a good birthday, knowing Chuuya didn't really celebrate it and never had done.
So, Dazai gets up and ready in this dingy shipping container, taking a shower then doing his hair nicely and getting dressed, etc.
Dazai already prepared a ton of things for his beloved, despite being someone who'd never be able to prepare anything, so he heads out the door happily with the gifts and such he had prepared in advance.
4am. Dazai really couldn't wait, he picks the lock to Chuuya's apartment and let's himself in, putting the stuff on the counter and hurrying over to Chuuya's bedroom.
"Chibi~ remember what day it is today?" Dazai grins, getting close to Chuuya and he sleeps and lightly shaking him.
Chuuya just groans, still deep in sleep and definitely had not been ready to be woken up at 4am.
Seeing this, Dazai just shakes Chuuya harder and eventually decides to kiss Chuuya on the lips, this causes Chuuya to wake up from the sudden contact.
"I... uh...?" Chuuya looks groggily up at Dazai's face, still half asleep and having no idea what's happening.
"Happy birthday, Chuuya~" Dazai smiles, poking Chuuya on his cheek.
"Happy birthday?" Chuuya mumbles, painted with a confused expression on his face, "um.. Happy birthday, Dazai?"
"No silly, it's your birthday!"
"Mine?"
"Yeah, yours, today's the 29th of April!"
Chuuya yawns, then sits up and Dazai sits next to Chuuya on top of the bed.
"Ugh... what time is it?" Chuuya asks, rubbing his eyes.
"Mm..... 4am. Why?" Dazai replies, acting like it's nothing.
"I— you woke me up this early? Just to say Happy birthday?" Chuuya looks at Dazai, stunned. Though, he can't really get mad at the dedication of Dazai waking up so early and managing to pull himself out of bed, get ready and walk all the way to Chuuya's apartment to do this just over something like a birthday.
"Ah~ not just to say happy birthday either!I got you some stuff too as presents" Dazai grins, leaning into Chuuya.
"Presents? Birthday presents? Really?" Chuuya asks, he doesn't really expect being wished a happy birthday, let alone receiving birthday gifts, it all feels a bit foreign.
Chuuya gets up to go get dressed and ready, then comes into the front room where Dazai is waiting, sitting on the sofa.
Dazai is practically beaming, he's kicking his legs and grinning ear to ear like a little kid. He really does look like a little kid currently.
Chuuya sits down next to Dazai, in which Dazai shifts closer to Chuuya happily.
"You're like a little boy right now, Dazai" Chuuya scoffs, though can't help but find it endearing.
Turning his head, Chuuya sees Dazai set out birthday gifts on the coffee table, surprisingly they were neatly wrapped in a birthday wrapping paper.
"Did you do this? Or had something help you?" Chuuya asks, knowng Dazai is shit when it comes to wrapping things, always ripping the paper by accident and getting the tape all stuck together.
"Eh.. I asked Atsushi to help. Said it was for a lady I was going drinking with, or something." Dazai smiles, "now, open them!!"
Dazai hands Chuuya one of the gifts, something small first, opening it up, it seems to be a bunch of different small chains, most likely for Chuuya's hat.
"Eh, chains?" Chuuya asks, pretending like he's unbothered yet secretly finds it endearing Dazai would buy accessories for his beloved hats, and even notices that Chuuya wears a chain on his hat in the first place.
"Yep!I got you some chains for your hat, I notice you like wearing those on your hats~" Dazai smiles, picking up one of them and putting it infront of Chuuya for him to see better, they seem pretty good quality, too..
"Ah, thank you, Dazai.. erh.. I guess." Chuuya blushes, not wanting to fully commit to acting all lovely dovey, aswell at the fact he feels quite guilty over the fact Dazai's gone out his way to buy stuff for Chuuya only since it's his birthday.
Picking up and opening the next one — a much larger one — Chuuya is met by 2 bottles of wine. It's not really ball knowledge that Chuuya likes wine, though Dazai has specially picked out some good, expensive wine judt for Chuuya, it seems.
"Soo.. do you like it? It took me a while to find these, but I found them in the end!" Dazai beams, knowing Chuuya loves his wine, especially ones like the type Dazai has given Chuuya.
"I— I— yeah, really, thanks" Chuuya's blush deepens, and Dazai grins more at the sight, knoeing Chuuya really appreciates it, though he isn't exactly the type who's good at handling his emotions and gratitude, especially around Dazai.
"Final one~" Dazai says, handing Chuuya the last gift, it's a bit heavy, though barely for someone as strong as Chuuya, he wonders how Dazai even manged to walk to his with so much heavy stuff in his hands.
Chuuya opens it, revealing wine glasses, and very fancy ones, in fact, the exact ones Chuuya had been wanting for ages, yet hadn't brought as he had to spend his money on other things.
"H—how did you know I wanted these?" Chuuya looks taken aback, and looks over at Dazai with wide eyes.
"Eh... I asked Akutagawa." Dazai shrugs, "he said you've mentioned those before so I went and got them for you. You can drink your new wine I got you in the now!"
"You went out of your way to ask Akutagawa what I most wanted.. despite the fact he practically wants to murder you?" Chuuya is conpletely stunned by the dedication Dazai's put into Chuuya's birthday just to make sure Chuuya has a good one.
"Yep!anything for my chibi!"
Afterwards, both men go to their jobs and work til evening, Chuuya still extremely flustered and heartstruck from the amount of dedication Dazai has put into something as meaningless as Chuuya's birthday.
Chuuya got a few happy birthdays here and there, but it wasn't much and definitely not as much compared to what Dazai did.
Once Chuuya comes home, he changes into something more comfortable and sits on his sofa, assuming that's the end and his birthday is now over, though the sound of the door unlocking and someone taking off their shoes proves otherwise.
"Chibi~ are you home?" A familiar voice calls out.
"Dazai? You staying the night or something?" Chuuya asks, acting as if he's unbothering yet secretly happy over the fact Dazai's come back.
"Yep!plus, we need to have the cake now" Dazai says from the hallway.
"Cake? I don't have any cake, Dazai." Chuuya scoffs, assuming Dazai has come round to eat all his sweet things, though Chuuya never has any of that and Dazai isn't the type to eat sweet stuff.
"Ehh? Your birthday cake, silly!" Dazai laughs, then steps into the living room, holding a white box.
"Birthday cake?"
"You don't have cake on your birthday?" Dazai tilts his head, confused.
"Well, no.. I don't."
"Well, i got you some anyways!it'll be a new experience,, with me!" Dazai says, setting the box down on the coffee table and going into the kitchen to get a cutting knife, 2 forks and 2 plates for them both.
Chuuya looks over at the box, the top of it is see-through and let's you see what's inside, it's a cake.
A beautiful victoria sponge cake, with the words 'happy birthday Chuuya' written on top with icing. Chuuya can't believe Dazai's put so much dedication into Chuuya's birthday, even getting a cake with icing that spells out 'happy birthday Chuuya'...
Dazai comes back, setting the things on the table and getting the cake out of the box.
"Here we go!" Dazai beams happily, giving Chuuya a slice of cake.
Chuuya takes a bite, it tastes pretty good.
"Oh, I forgot, I didn't bring any candles, sorry" Dazai looks down, realising he has indeed forgot something important.
"Candles? We doing a ritual now too?" Chuuya raises an eyebrow, having no idea about things like having candles on a cake you're supposed to blow out.
"Hmm? You don't know? You're supposed to put candles on birthday cakes, then blow them out as you make a wish!"
"I didn't know, but it's fine. I wouldn't have expected you to remember absolutely everything, and you did a good job getting all this together on your own.. I mean— it's fine. Or whatever." Chuuya says, before catching his slip up of kindness towards Dazai, he subtly puts his hand on his mouth and clears his throat.
Dazai blushes, and leaning against Chuuya as he begins eating his own cake.
