A "Short" Problem

Summary:

Small changes matter. Or, in some cases, short changes. Like Chuuya. It is a commen fact in the fandom that he is short, tiny, pint sized even. But, what if he wasn’t?

Or:

Somehow, a while after Dazai left the Port Mafia, Chuuya had a growth spurt, making him taller than Dazai. Dazai is not impressed.

Notes:

Wassup!!!! This one shot just popped into my head when I was trying to draw Chuuya for the first time, and I kept getting his legs wrong. I would either make them to short and look weird, or too tall. Then this idea was born! It was only supposed to take a short time to write it, but boom, it's been two days. Hope you enjoy reading!

Work Text:

It was a normal day in the office. Well, as normal as a day can be when you work at the Armed Detective Agency.

Atsushi sighed, again, for what seemed like the millionth time that day.

His suicidal mentor was going on about a new method of killing himself, and, not surprisingly, not getting his work done at all.

Because of this, Kunikida, who seemed the sanest of them all at times, was yelling at him.

Atsushi held back a wince as the volume escalated again, once again cursing his oversensitive ears.

Across from the arguing adults, were some of his other coworkers.

Ranpo, the genius detective, with a sugar addiction almost as strong as Dazai’s suicidal urges, was, as you could have guessed, scarfing down some jelly beans like a kid on Halloween.

He watched with slight concern tinged with awe, wondering yet again how the brilliant man didn’t have diabetes yet.

Next to Ranpo was the agencies doctor, Yosano.

She was watching fight happening on the other side of the room with an expression Atsushi could quite make out, and didn’t exactly want to.

In his opinion, she was the scariest out of them, and he held back a flinch when she looked at his direction, as if summoned by his thoughts.

He tuned back into the argument, only catching the last bit, hearing his mentor whine out, “-come on Kunikida! It’s prime time to commit suicide, I hear it’s all the rage right now!”

The older man sighed, pinching between his brows in clear annoyance. “Look Dazai, I don’t care if you kill yourself, but for the last time, would you please do it after you finish your work?”

“But it’s so boooooring! Besides, why should I do it when I could have my lovely mentee do it for me?” Dazai complained, shooting a charming smile in Atsushi’s direction.

Well, he wasn’t wrong. Even if Dazai didn’t actually complete his work, Atsushi would still end up doing it instead, but he wasn’t complaining that much, not like it would do anything.

“Ahhhh, it’s times like when I miss my chibi,” Dazai sighed wistfully, looking in the distance.

Atsushi felt a pang of confusion run through him, and questioningly asked, “Uh, Dazai? Who are you talking about?l

The older man only laughed, saying, “Ah, yes, by slug! You probably wouldn’t even be able to, see him, you’d need a microscope to even catch a glimpse!”

“You haven’t answered the poor boys question, Dazai!” Kunikida snapped, veins bulging in his neck.

The suicidal genius just waved his hand, remarking, “You remind me of him more every day, Ku-in-ki-da! But as I was saying, my dog is called Chuuya. Such a cute name for such a tiny chibi, eh?”

That only deepened his confusion, as he remembered meeting the man in question, and one thing stood out to him.

From his right, he could see Yosano and Ranpo doubled over in laughter, but he ignored it, instead favoring to ask, “But, Dazai, what are you talking about? Chuuya isn’t short, in fact, he’s pretty tall!”

Atsushi expected a response, yes, maybe some laughter, or even a joke, but he was met with silence.

Dazai was just standing there, gaping, looking heart broken, with an expression of pure horror on his face, and- was that a tear?!

“Dazai? Are you okay? Im sorry I did something to make you upset, I didn’t know that you didn’t like being short per than Chuuya.” He asked gently, concern leaking into his voice.

That only seemed to make Dazai look even more upset, and caused Yosano and Ranpo to laugh even harder.

With a strange waver in his voice, Dazai suddenly stood up stiffly, saying, “I-I have to go.”

And with that, his mentor quickly exited the room, leaving a behind a bewildered Atsushi and a wheezing doctor and detective.

Many thoughts ran through Dazai’s head, but the most noticeable one was, how the fuck did Chuuya get tall?

After all, when he had left his pet dog, he had been shorter than Atsushi was now!

He rushed over to the Port Mafia building, not quite believing it for himself, although he knew that his mentee would not lie to him.

He dashed inside the tall structure, running through doors.

Inside it looked the same as he remembered, and he quickly shook of the memories that aroused in his head, focusing on getting into the elevator as quickly as possible.

Hopefully the floors hadn’t changed to much, and he nervously stood next to the elevator doors, putting on a careree smile.

The doors seemed to take forever to open, each second feeling longer than it should have, but finally, after what felt like years of waiting, he heard the telltale ding of the elevator arriving.

He slipped inside, pressing the button that led to Chuuya’s floor, or at least, it did the last time he checked, and patiently (read as: very nervously) waited for the doors to close.

As the elevator started to ascend, he finally relaxed, well, as much as he could possibly in a mafia building.

A couple of passengers got on and off the elevator as it slowly moved upwards, but luckily they were not anybody Dazai knew, and they thankfully sticked to themselves.

The seconds stretched into minutes, but he finally reached his destination.

As soon as the gap in the doors was wide enough, he dashed through narrow opening, immediately heading straight towards the huge doorway at the end of the hall, where he knew Chuuya resided during work hours.

As he reached the huge doors, he took a deep breath, quickly checking himself over in the reflection in the windows.

It was stupid, Dazai knew that, but for some reason, he wanted to look presentable in front of the man he had not seen in a long while.

Steeling his nerves, he put his hand on the doorknob, and with a deep breath, pushed open the doors.

As he stepped through, he cautiously looked around, and… there was no Chuuya.

He ignored the pant of disappointment that rang through him, instead opting to look around the grand suite.

It was fancier than anything in the agency for sure, and would probably make most people drool at the amount of money it had probably cost to afford all this.

With as sigh, he headed towards the huge couch in the middle of the room, and immediately flopped onto it, drooping into the soft plush cushions.

Dazai closed his eyes, not sleeping, he wouldn’t be able to in a space like this, huge and open, especially a room in the Port Mafia building, but close, merely just resting his eyes, only wide awake the whole time.

As he waited for the apparently taller man to arrive, Dazai pulled out his phone, checking his texts.

After he had rushed out, he currently had fifteen missed calls from Kunikida, probably all filled with him yelling for Dazai to come back and do his work, with a couple of voicemails from Atsushi.

He ignored them, instead opening up one of the random games he had on his phone, and began to play.

After he got bored of that game, he opened another, and another, until he finally heard footsteps nearing the door, and a familiar cursing coming from the person.

He quickly jumped up putting on a cheery voice, and said as the other man was opening the door, "Chibi!!! I heard you got a growth spurt, but my slug couldn't have gotten taller, so I just had to rush over too-"

His voice died down as the man in question turned to face him with a glare.

Chuuya was standing in the door way, and his hair had gotten longer.

The gravity manipulator was still wearing his stupid hat, and a huge black coat.

But what stood out to him the most was his height, and holy shit, Atsushi wasn't lying.

His old partner had definitely gotten taller, and looked to be around 6'3, making him taller then even Kunikida.

And oh, 𝘰𝘩, how had he managed to get even hotter?

Dazai felt his face heat up, cursing his body for betraying him.

"Yes? You were saying, shitty mackerel?" Chuuya snapped, and fuck, his voice and gotten deeper, with an edge to it that made Dazai weak to his knees.

Then Dazai, being Dazai, just wolf whistled, raking his eyes up and down the taller man's body.

Chuuya turned bright red, looking like a firecracker, and hissed out, "FOUR FUCKING YEARS! I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN FOUR FUCKING YEARS! AND YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO NOT EVEN SAY HELLO?"

Dazai only let out a laugh, saying, "What, am I not allowed to enjoy the view? What happened, slug? You used to be so small, I needed a microscope to see you!"

Chuuya looked flustered at the first part, but quickly forgot about his previous feelings, instead opting to snap back, "Your just jealous, huh, 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘬?"

"How's the stars from up there, dog?" Dazai only taunted back, letting out a smirk as he saw a vein bulge in Chuuyas neck.

"Why you-! You just wish your were taller, shitty mackerel!"

Dazai let out a chuckle, dodging the pen thrown his way. He missed this, the playful banter between the two of them.

He was distracted from his musings when Chuuya decided to body slam him, which would have been fine, if he had been a teenager, but 200 pounds of muscle on a tall body was a little too much for him, and Dazai went down like a rock, gasping for air.

Chuuya let out a triumphant laugh, before it died down, staring at Dazai underneath him.

They were only a couple of inches apart, and Dazai could see every inch of his face clearly, and those stunning blue eyes staring back at him.

"Not so bold now, eh slug?" He said lowly, letting out a small smirk at the flush on the other man's face.

Chuuya sputtered for an answer, but seemed to give up. At the look on his old partners face, Dazai just chuckled with satisfaction, but was quickly cut off by the feeling of lips smashing against his own.

His eyes widened in surprise, but he didn't pull away, instead pressing back, slowly lifting his hand to cradle Chuuyas cheek.

He didn't know how much time had passed, but eventually they broke away, both panting for air.

Chuuya was bright red, and Dazai probably was too. He sat up, pulling out his phone, with the taller man looking at him with a hint of confusion.

"Just telling the agency not expect me for the rest of the day," He explained, and Chuuya's face flushed even harder, making him let out a laugh.

"Shut up." The gravity manipulator muttered, before pressing a quick kiss on Dazai's lips, effectively shutting him up.

"I take it you like enjoy new height?" Chuuya teased, and this time it was Dazai who looked away, flustered.

"Well, I'm glad Chuuya can even see me from up there!" He shot back, and before the other man could sputter something else, they were kissing again.

All in all, Dazai decided satisfactory, it was nice seeing his old partner again.
