Work Text:
Megumi stares up at the ceiling, his eyes roaming the cracks and the water stains. Yuuji is rambling on about some movie that he saw.
”And then he shot him! How crazy is that!?” Yuuji beams. A ball of sunshine compared to Megumi’s harsh bluntness and mysterious aura.
He nodded along as Yuuji kept talking. Thinking of other things.
He takes another small bite of his food, nibbling at the katsudon. Yuuji shoves more food into his mouth as he keeps talking for the both of them. Which Megumi didn’t mind. He liked listening to the pink-headed teenager talk about his interests.
As he stares at the ceiling again, Yuuji notices his lack of energy and animatedly waves a hand over his face.
“Earth to Fushiguro? Hellooo,” Yuuji says smiling. “You listening?” he says with a smile. “C’mon what’s up?” Yuuji says as he punches Megumi on the shoulder teasingly.
“Knock it off,” he says harsher than he intended.
“Oh… Sorry my bad,” Yuuji mumbles, looking like a hurt puppy as he picks at his food.
Megumi groans. “No, I’m sorry. Just tired ‘kay?”
Yuuji’s eyes light back up like a child on Christmas. “Alright. No problem,” he beams. Stuffing more food into his mouth.
Megumi sighs. How could he tell him? This beam of sunshine of a boy. A living embodiment of happiness. He wouldn’t. That was all he just wouldn’t.
Yuuji saunters into Megumi’s room, his hands in his pockets.
“Oh Fushiguro,” he drawls, peering around the room for him. He wasn’t here yet. Probably training with Maki or Panda. Oh well, Yuuji would just wait for him.
He flops onto the bed, heaving a dramatic sigh as he looks up at the ceiling. Growing bored after only a few minutes, Yuuji springs up off the bed.
He looks around again, looking for something to distract him from boredom. His room is so bland he thinks. The room is bare of color. Just plain walls and a dresser and a bed. With the exception of some junk in his dresser. Deciding he would be nosy for once, he rummages through the junk in his drawers. Brush, way too much hair product, pictures, and a small box. A box that a girl might keep earrings in.
Curious, Yuuji grabs the small box and is about to open it when he hears the door open. Megumi steps into the room. When he sees Yuuji with the drawers open he freezes. His eyes widening.
“What are you doing?” Megumi says fearfully.
“Ugh, finally! I was waiting and you were taking forever. I got bored. I wanted to know what secrets you were hiding,” he teases playfully.
“Put that back Yuuji,” Megumi warns pleadingly.
“I’ve really got you now! Ha! Let’s see, you got earrings in here Fushi?” Yuuji jokes as he opens the box.
What he sees makes his blood run ice cold.
“M-Megumi? Wha- what is this? Don’t tell me that…” Yuuji chokes as his eyes glint with unshed tears. “Megumi…”
Megumi gives up. He falls into Itadori’s embrace letting Yuuji bury his face into the crook of his neck. Yuuji holds on tight.
“I’msosorry, I’msosorry,” Yuuji chokes.
Megumi chokes on air, he didn’t want Yuuji to find out this way. He wanted it to come from him. Not Yuuji stumbling upon his fucking blade.
The boys clutch each other tight, grasping onto one another for support. Yuuji’s tears soak into Megumi’s uniform. And vice-versa.
Megumi couldn’t hide it anymore. It was out. The truth. He couldn’t deny it. He also didn’t want to. It free it as it a massive weight had lifted off his shoulders.
“How long…?” Satoru asks, looking up through thick white eyelashes. “Megumi, please, understand that I just want to help. I just want to help… I just want you to be safe,” he trails off.
Satoru looks back to Megumi, his spiky black hair disappearing behind his hands as he runs them through it.
“Please, I’m not mad. I’m not disappointed or anything. I just wish I could have done something to help you before it came to this. C- can you look at me?” he pleads.
Eventually, red-rimmed eyes stare back up at him from where he sits on his bed. Satoru himself sits on the floor with his legs crossed.
“You can tell me anything… You know that right? I just… I don’t want you to hold it all in anymore.”
Megumi swallows, seemingly fighting to say something. Satoru’s eyes brim with tears finally and he wipes them away under his glasses.
“C’mon please just say something. Anything really. I- was there something I could have done better? Or I—“ Satoru rambles on.
Megumi slowly shakes his head. “No,” he whispers. “It isn’t you. It was never you… It was just me.“
