It’s stupid-late when Samira finally admits defeat, closing her laptop. Night has encroached into her apartment from her open window; it gathered around the edges of her laptop screen, and with that closed, it’s dark enough that spots dance in front of her eyes. She stretches an ache from between her shoulders before rising and pushing the old, straight-backed wooden chair into its spot at her table.
Her phone flashes the time when Abby’s text comes through. 1:37am. She has Street Team tomorrow; she should just go to bed. But she isn’t ready, knows that if she tries her brain will just chew over her research until the sun rises. Without funding, the after-midnight hours are her only quiet, guaranteed research time, and she still isn’t making as much progress as she’d like.
Samira moves through her bedtime routine with her eyes mostly closed. It’s only a few steps to anywhere in her tiny studio, and it’s not like she has a bunch of furniture to worry about running into. When she first moved in four years ago, she deposited her bedframe, couch, and kitchen table in a different corner each, shrugged, and said, “Good enough.” She had more important things to worry about then, like making an impeccable first impression on her new coworkers, and she has more important things to worry about now, like the incidences and trends behind sickle-cell leukemia patients’ experiences in the ED.
She’ll read a chapter or two of this new book club book – Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon – and call it quits. A couple hours of sleep, a couple cups of chai, and she’ll be good as new at the crack of dawn for Street Team.
Samira crawls into bed, drops her phone onto her stomach, and opens her Kindle.
