Rose Landry would like everyone to calm down.
The actor and model, who has long been a familiar face at Ottawa Centaurs games, found herself at the center of yet another hockey internet meltdown this month after a fan posted a harmless photo captioned: “Just met ROSE FUCKING LANDRY at the Cens game and she was so nice and so pretty i am freaking the fuck out.”
Normal enough. Sweet, even.
Unfortunately, this is hockey fandom online, where no woman is ever allowed to simply attend a sporting event in peace.
Within hours, quote-posts spiraled into the usual mess of misogyny, resentment and weird territorial behavior that women in sports spaces know all too well.
“Her whole hockey-fan routine is so phony and boring,” one viral reply read. “She’s just a puck bunny who wants to get with hockey players.” Which then garnered the reply “Oh dude you gotta die I’m not kidding.”
“I wish I could say I was shocked,” Landry tells Teen Vogue over coffee in downtown Toronto, where she's shooting the highly anticipated X-Squad 5. “But honestly, this happens every couple weeks at this point. I can't visit my friends without a viral meltdown."
If you’ve spent literally any time online around male-dominated sports fandoms, you already know the script. Women who like sports are either accused of being fake fans, attention-seekers, or opportunists trying to sleep with athletes. The accusations become even more intense if the woman in question is attractive, visible online, or - in Landry’s case - once dated a hockey player.
Landry previously dated NHL player Shane Hollander years ago. Hollander has since come out as gay, and married his long-time rival Ilya Rozanov.
“Apparently dating one hockey player years ago means I can never attend a game again without becoming a public tribunal,” she says, laughing. “Like, sorry everyone. I should have known this would permanently revoke my right to enjoy hockey. And it's genuinely disheartening. Shane is one of my best friends and I love going to his games."
The irony, according to Landry, is that she’s been around hockey her entire life.
“My dad watched hockey constantly. My brothers played. Half my childhood was spent in freezing cold arenas eating terrible fries,” she says. “But people see one woman at a game and immediately construct this entire narrative around her.”
What frustrates her most is how differently men and women are treated in fan spaces.
“If a guy is obsessed with hockey, people think he’s passionate,” she says. “If a woman is obsessed with hockey, people think she must secretly want something.”
Landry seems both amused and deeply exhausted by the ecosystem surrounding modern hockey fandom, where players’ relationships, friendships and social lives are dissected with near forensic intensity online. At one point during our conversation, she references “Google-doc-level conspiracy theories” fans once created after she was seen sitting beside Hollander’s mother during a playoff game.
That double standard has become increasingly obvious as sports culture continues moving online. Women in hockey spaces, whether journalists, influencers, fans, girlfriends, celebrities or players themselves, are often subjected to scrutiny that male fans simply aren’t.
And hockey fandom, in particular, can get uniquely weird.
“There’s this constant gatekeeping,” Landry says. “People act like women need to pass some kind of exam to prove we deserve to be there. Like yeah, dude, I know what icing is. I don't have to prove anything to you. And it’s not even really about me. I think women who like sports are constantly forced to justify themselves in a way men aren’t.”
And yes, she knows some people will still insist she’s only attending games because the players are attractive.
“I mean,” she says carefully, “there are about five hockey players who don't look like they snuck onto earth, and two of them are married to each other.”
Fair enough.
