Work Text:

“Did you read their newsletter? Such a good deal. I’m excited,” Ilya said, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel.

Yuna smiled in the passenger seat.

Ever since she’d introduced Ilya to a furniture store that specialized in sleek, modern pieces, Ilya had been obsessed. And he’d started joining her on these shopping trips.

“Of course,” she said, “I saw a lamp that really fits your guest room.”

“White ceramic?” said Ilya, and Yuna nodded, smiling. “Yes, I like it. And I don’t think Shane will care what I buy.” He flashed a conspiratorial smile at Yuna.

It hadn’t been the easiest, learning that her son had loved the hockey player that she’d spent years studying. She was confident that she knew more about Ilya’s hockey techniques and weaknesses than Shane ever would.

But Ilya had proved himself as the perfect complement to Shane, such as being his personal interior decorator, the best one that Shane had ever found: Shane enjoyed owning real estate, but, with amazingly refined taste, Ilya had been the one who enjoyed picking out the furniture and color schemes with Yuna.

In the store, she and Ilya pointed at different pieces, Ilya carrying the white ceramic lamp around to compare it with several other ones, making the store associates watch with worry. To Yuna’s surprise, Ilya had pictures of each corner of the guest room (and every room), and even of Shane’s cottage. He showed Yuna where he thought the lamp should go.

“I like this one too,” said Ilya, touching another lamp with a wooden base and brass details. “Okay, I will buy it as surprise, for the cottage. Shane will like the texture.”

Ilya paid for the two lamps and a walnut cutting board for Yuna, and carried everything to the car.

Back at Ilya and Shane’s house, David and Shane were cooking dinner. Ilya dragged Shane to the living room. There were happy sparkles in Ilya’s eyes as he proudly took out the two lamps from their packaging.

“Ilya, you’re spoiling me,” Shane said after giving Ilya a kiss.

And Ilya held him by the waist, kissing him back, then pressed their noses together.

It was probably time to give these two some space. When Yuna walked into the kitchen, David immediately knew what she wanted to say.

“Yeah, Shane couldn’t stop talking about Ilya either,” he said, shaking his head and smiling.

Notes:
